Detailed Description:

Elvyn Lea Lodge (pronounced “Elvin Lee” Lodge) occupies a unique niche in northern Michigan lodging, hosting gatherings of people coming together with a shared purpose, from family reunions and weddings to workshops, small conferences, meetings, training programs, and gatherings of clubs, associations, and business associates. The floor plan and size allow for exclusive use by a single group, resulting in an environment that is entirely private and optimal for deepening relationships and fostering a sense of community. Guests enjoy comfortable accommodations with a choice of room types, food service on site , and two lounge areas in a historic lodge with original pine walls and log-beamed ceiling. New owners purchased the property in 2013 and upgrades are ongoing. Be sure to visit our website at http://www.elvynlea.com and ask about the latest improvements in services and amenities.

The twenty guest rooms (request a detailed floor plan) are designed to be shared and provide lodging for up to 80 guests. The lodge accommodates motor coach and bus tours, and those driving in will find the location to be centrally located to the nearby resort communities of Walloon Village, Boyne City, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, and East Jordan. Access to Walloon Lake is just down the hill on M75 in Walloon Village, also home to popular restaurants and shops. Elvyn Lea provides an ideal “home base” for those wanting to explore all that northern Michigan has to offer!

The building, constructed in 1957, has a classic northern Michigan lodge interior, with log beams and large central gas log fireplace in the main lounge. It has the feel of a summer camp for grown-ups, and will be most enjoyed by those who appreciate the history and natural beauty of the building and property. Owners have made many improvements that guests appreciate, including comfortable beds and high speed Internet, but have retained the original charm. Each guest room has its own bathroom with shower. Key features of the property include our location in the heart of northern Michigan resort country and near Walloon Lake, widely known as the boyhood summer home of Ernest Hemingway.

The property includes 44 wooded acres with extensive trails, and features a spectacular 1.5 acre event lawn, a natural amphitheater in the forest surrounded by hardwood tress. This gorgeous setting provides a dramatic canvas for staging outdoor weddings, parties, concerts and theater performances. The lodge and grounds are ideal for educational programs, retreats, and groups of friends, families, and colleagues. Let us help you plan your northern Michigan experience with entertainment, special meals, local adventures, and other delightful activities that everyone will enjoy and remember for years to come. The privacy and natural beauty of our property, its location in the heart of northern Michigan resort country, and the wide range of experiences that we can provide make Elvyn Lea Lodge an ideal destination for large groups.

Elvyn Lea is close to many lakes and rivers, with access to Walloon Lake (just down the hill), Lake Michigan, and the Bear, Boyne, and Jordan rivers. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, including skiing, snowshoeing, boating, kayaking, hiking, and so much more! The local foods movement is strong in this area and there are many excellent restaurants and farmers markets to enjoy. The lodge hosts occasional storytellers, live music performances, guest speakers, and guided walks on our property, and for larger groups we can arrange for those activities for an additional fee.

A contract is required and house rules ask for respectful treatment of the property and safety for guests and staff. Most people coming here appreciate quiet recreational activities, so owners seek to maintain an environment that allows for that. Dogs are allowed with some restrictions. Smoking and unauthorized fires are strictly prohibited.

Highly recommend for family gatherings!!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing stay we had! We rented out the entire lodge for a weekend family gathering. The owners are as nice as can be. They made sure that every minute of our stay was enjoyable. From lemonade and cookies upon arrival, a daily weather forecast left for us, suggestions on things to do in the area, checkins to make sure we had everything we needed, immediate responses to texts..they couldn't have been better.

The property from the rooms, sitting areas, and outside areas are extremely clean and comfortable. We had a party of about 60 people so we rented out every room. Each and every person enjoyed themselves and had nothing but good things to say.

The property has an awesome outside kitchen with an adorable fenced in backyard, perfect to let the kids safely run around. There is another huge outside sitting area with 2 firepits that they loaded with firewood for us nightly. Let's not forget the soccer field sized manicured lawn area where we had a blast playing a family kickball game along with a wooded area where we enjoyed some hiking. The owners were even kind enough to take our huge family picture in that gorgeous open area.

It can be a real challenge to try and please 60+ people for an entire weekend but the owners Michael & Monica, made it happen. Every one of my family members had a great time and we will fondly remember our weekend together forever. I would highly recommend a stay at Elvyn Lea Lodge!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write this thoughtful review, and for letting us know that you and your family enjoyed your time here at Elvyn Lea. It is an honor to have been chosen as your gathering place for sharing memories, catching up, reconnecting, laughing, playing, eating, celebrating and spending quality time together under one roof in this “big house.” We love hearing the buzz of conversation and seeing smiles when everyone is assembled in the main lounge for breakfast each morning, and knowing that your children will remember being here with family for many years to come. It is a joy to see them exploring nature on the property and in this beautiful region of northern Michigan that surrounds us. The efforts of a committed organizer are behind the success of every group event here. Your patience and diligence in the months leading up to your reunion helped to pave the way for a successful and pleasurable weekend for all concerned. We do hope that you will consider returning, and that you and your family will consider this your home up north for future gatherings!

Family Reunion 50 folks ages 2- 97

  • 5 of 5

The lodge was very clean and orderly...owners Monica and Mike were very helpful and available as needed. We rented the whole lodge, so everybody could spread out without interrupting other people. The new patio and grille area got a lot of use. Firepit with plenty of wood was used nightly

Beds very comfortable......nice that each room had its own bathroom.

About 1/3 of the rooms were only fitted with either 2 or 3 sets of bunks.....so sleeping arrangements for couples in some cases was not ideal. I understand that they are slowly converting more rooms to have queen bed and bunks, which is great for young families.

Everybody loved the rustic log cabin decor.......

Nearby access to Walloon lake was very nice and the 40 acre spread has some nice walking trails..

It was really the perfect place for a group our size

Owner's Response: We are happy to know that you enjoyed your time here and appreciate your taking time to write this thoughtful review. Guest feedback is very important to us and we are responsive to preferences expressed. Most groups that come here are multi-generational, and because each group has a different proportion of adults vs. children, we are striving for the bed and room configurations that best serve their needs. Currently we have 4 rooms with king size beds (3 of those also have a set of twin bunks), 8 rooms with queen size beds and full size bunks, and the remainder of the rooms have twin size bunks. We may be converting more of those to include a king size bed plus a set of twin bunks if that is what most guests prefer. As you mention, the combination of queen or king size beds plus bunks is great for families! We get a lot of comments about the comfort of our queen and king size beds, which are made right here in Michigan. We'll consider your suggestions as we plan more improvements to be made in the coming months. Thank you!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We traveled for a long weekend with lots of kids. There were a total of 58 of us. The lodge was PERFECT for our group. The outdoor kitchen was a huge bonus because we were able to bring our own food and cook all our meals on site which saved everyone a ton of money. The feild outback was also an enormous hit with the kids - even though our weekend was rainy, they played constant wiffle ball, football, tag, etc. The owner was fabulous at getting us anything we needed. Rooms were clean and pretty nice sized. Everyone commented on how comfy the beds were too! Lots of options for gathering spaces so everyone can choose there own thing. Beautiful beach is just a minute away along with a cute bar and restaurant and a wonderful park with playground, volleyball, basketball and a river/stream.

We had a fabulous weekend, just trying to figure out when we can come back again!

Owner's Response: We do hope you will be back again! It was truly a highlight of our summer to have your group here, Emily. What fun to see all of you enjoying the property! Especially memorable was that Saturday when the weather was so still and perfect (and remarkably bug free!) well into the night, the campfire was blazing, and we could hear the sounds of children laughing with a chorus of frogs in the background. Perfection! It took and outstanding organizer to make it all happen. Thank you for all of your efforts in making this special weekend a success!

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This lodge was a slice of heaven. We stayed there with a large group and it was perfect. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and each family had plenty of room. The facility is just great. We cooked 2 large dinners in the outdoor kitchen with pleasure and ease. The breakfast in the morning was great and there was plenty of room for us to store our food. The fire pit was a huge hit as was the expansive playing field and woods. We were so close to downtown Walloon and we were able to easily enjoy all that this cute town has to offer. There was not one person in our group who had anything other than glowing things to say about our time there. We can't wait to return to this special place!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind words. We are so pleased to know that you enjoyed your time here! We created the patio kitchen and fire pit areas recently to provide guests with more and better cooking and gathering spaces, and it is fun and gratifying for us to see everyone using them and having a great time together. We hope you will be back again soon!

Great venue for our parent's 50th wedding party!

  • 5 of 5

We had been looking for a place to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary in a way that would "bring people together" in a quaint, engaging, and authentic setting. Elvyn Lea was a perfect fit. Since everyone stayed on the premises, it encouraged deeper conversations and connecting with each other over the course of a whole weekend.

We utilized the large green spaces and the fire-pits, we hiked the trails, we played old movies in the lounge and we spent a majority of the time on the outdoor patio. The included breakfasts were a surprising treat! The food and selection were REALLY good and the setting was perfect for hanging out, swapping stories, drinking coffee and catching up.

Nearby Walloon Village rounded out our activities. We rented a pontoon boat and played at the beach and ate a dinner at Barrel-Back.

The owners were quick to help out and provide support if needed. They were very helpful in planning the event, too. This is a great place for a larger get-together (like a reunion, anniversary party, wedding) in an unassuming, unpretentious, outdoorsy, down-home kind of way.

A Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

While visiting my mother in Alpena, Michigan, I decided to go on a visit to Boyne City, Petoskey, Charlevoix & Traverse City. Our first night's stay was at Elvyn Lee Lodge. We couldn't have asked for a better start to our trip. We were able to enjoy the leaves changing right from our window. Michael and Monica, the owners, could not have been more welcoming. I was so impressed with their restoration of the lodge. The did a perfect job of restoring and capturing the feel of Northern Michigan and all if it's beauty. And the breakfast, WOW, I wanted Monica to come home with me so I could have those breakfasts every day. Sitting around the fire place in the lodge is so fun, perfect place to have a glass of wine and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

As an aside, I'm an artist living in Santa Fe, NM, and I was so surprised to see the wonderful quality of art in Northern Michigan! I would highly recommend Elvyn Lee Lodge as a great place for groups of artists to stay as you tour the local cities in the area that are filled with wonderful art of all kinds.
