This is for travelers interested in weekend, weekday, week-long rentals (and longer) of a room in my Belmont home (near the Cambridge and Watertown lines). I am offering this, Airbnb-style, such that I live at the house and you will be sharing it with me.
It's fantastic for short-term stays to see events like The Boston Marathon, The Head of the Charles, First Night (New Year's Eve), and Boston's July 4th celebration... Or for parents visiting students or attending graduations at one of Cambridge and Boston's many colleges and universities... (We're 10 minutes to Harvard by car).
We're a 4-minute walk from the MBTA bus line which runs to Harvard Square in Cambridge (a 10-minute ride), and a 30-minute bus/subway ride into Boston. Or park your car in the driveway and you can drive into Cambridge and downtown Boston within 10-15 minutes.
The condo is a tastefully decorated (lots of African art!) first floor of 2-family home built in the 1920's. It has hardwood floors, a beamed living room ceiling, fireplace, and renovated kitchen. It's on a quiet, tree-lined street that is steps from a local park with newly-renovated tennis courts, and a 10-minute walk from the Fresh Pond Reservoir (great walking!) and community golf course. There's also plenty of restaurants, a supermarket and shopping nearby.
Provided are a king size bed in a private room with TV, access to the bathroom, kitchen (with 55-inch flat screen TV), living room, dining room, den with fireplace, workout room, and back porch with barbecue and nice yard.
Single guests, or couples who do not require or want to share a king size bed, are welcome to stay in another in another bedroom, which has two single beds, one of which is a trundle which pulls out from under the other. See the options in the photos with just one bed versus two. This room is the same size as the room with the king bed. It has a bureau to put clothes in, a desk to work at or just to use to put your suitcase on, and a comfortable chair to sit in.
The room with the king bed has a table to put a suitcase on and less storage than the room with the single(s). The room with the king bed does have a chair, though it is wooden and more of a decorative piece than one you would lounge in. It also has a TV, where the room with the single beds does not, but you are welcome to use the 55-inch TV in the living room at any time.
For parties requiring more than one bedroom, I can rent out both rooms for double the price of this listing.
You are welcome to use my workout room, which has a multi-weight machine, free weights, bench, arm curling station , stationary bicycle, stair master, TV and stereo.
You will find my home very clean and well-kept up. Feel free to be messy in your room, but know that the rest of the house won't be a burden to you as far as any mess goes.
Lastly, I have two cats. While I keep the house well-vacuumed, this may not be the space for you if you're allergic.
I am a former TV news reporter who now produces videos for companies, universities and not-for-profits. I enjoy hosting people in my home, of which I take great pride. I'm also a Boston-area native, and so can advise guests on where to go and how to get there.
Mont Fennel purchased this condo in 1992
Belmont is a beautiful town with great schools, well-kept homes and a vibrant center. And yet it is steps from Boston -- I can hop in my car and be in downtown in 12 minutes.
My son and I stayed at Mont's flat during Head of Charles regatta weekend. Only 5 minutes to river! Extremely quiet and safe neighborhood. House is beautiful and Mont makes you feel right at home. Pictures are exactly as the property looks. You can use kitchen and den if you choose. We walked 3 blocks to excellent neighborhood restaurants for dinners (inexpensive for Boston). Park in driveway.
A repeat customer now for year #2. Save my room for next year, we are sure to be back. The convenience to Cambridge and the river were just perfect for us.
I made last second plans to visit Boston for 6 nights, and it was recommended to me to find a place along the route of the 73 bus in Belmont since it would combine a beautiful neighborhood with easy access to everything I'd want to visit in Boston. Mont's place did not disappoint, with the nearest bus station being 5 minutes away, and a 45 minute bus + subway ride to anything and everything downtown.
His house exudes a warmth and coziness from the first moment you're in it. It's beautifully decorated, and the wood and color tones all around the house make you feel comfortable and at ease. Mont himself is an very friendly and helpful host, making sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed, and following up quickly with any issues. The house was in impeccable state cleanliness wise. Wi-fi access was good enough for me to enjoy some Netflix during downtime, so another plus there.
I stayed in the bedroom with the single bed, which also features a desk if you need a work area. The bed was comfortable, and didn't feel cramped at all. There's plenty of light coming in during the day, but you have privacy.
There's a shared bathroom which he makes a point of using as little as possible and leaving it for the guests to use, and I never had to wait. Shower's water pressure is a plus too.
Mont's 2 cats also live there: they're extremely friendly, and follow instructions well.
The neighborhood was very pretty and quiet, and felt safe. That and the very easy access to public transportation as well as the number of shops and eateries within walking distance made for a very nice choice.
Mont provided me with a 12-page document listing house rules as well as explaining where everything is and how to use any and all appliances around the house. You can brew your own coffee, cook, even wash and dry your clothes with everything provided, so that was nice. The length of the document might seem intimidating at first but I appreciated the robustness, it's supposed to cover everything you need even during times of the year when he's not at home, and has other useful tips such as where to rent a bike from since Boston really offers itself to people that like to ride with bike lanes and signs on how to get to parts of the city using them.
All in all, I was very happy with my stay, and I'd consider staying here again if I find myself in town. Mont is a pleasure to have as a host, and his house provided for me very well while I was there.
This was the first time we have stayed at a HomeAway and didn't know how it would be. The room was comfortable and spacious with a television. The shared bathroom was clean and worked out fine. We had use of the kitchen where we had our breakfast and could have cooked if we chose. We could have watched TV one evening in the living room with the owner, but we were tired. The owner was friendly, nice and accommodating. We were in the area to visit relatives who live not far from there which made it convenient for us. We were also there to visit Boston and were able to use Uber, taxi, bus or my daughter for transportation to various sites. While the location might not be ideal for those just there to go to Boston, the price, I'm sure, is less than Boston. Harvard Square is only 10 minutes away on the bus. There are restaurants not far as well. The only downside was that the cat box was under the kitchen table.
The property was as advertised & the host was friendly and helpful when we had questions. He mostly works from home so was there almost all of the time we were there, which was not an issue for us. Our bedroom was comfortable and we had access to other living areas although we spent little time there. The host provided a VERY detailed manual prior to arrival which helped us understand his expectations about staying there.
Two things to note: There is no AC so you need to either keep the windows and door open or request a fan. Also, in case you are not animal friendly, he has two cats that will visit your bedroom if you leave the door open.
We were in the Boston area recently to visit our daughter and her family in Watertown, which is why we were looking to stay in Belmont, and it worked out well. The traffic in Belmont is light by comparison to Cambridge, where we stayed last time, and parking much easier to manage.
Mont supplied a complete written description of everything we needed to know well ahead of time, and it was all exactly as he had outlined, as was the homeaway listing.
The duplex is on a quiet street, with off street parking, and we felt totally safe. The neighborhood reminded us a lot of where we used to live in South Minneapolis.
As we were in nearby Watertown a lot we ate most of our meals there. I can recommend the Ash Reshteh soup at Molana's Persian Restaurant, and the Ixtapa Mexican restaurant had good food, though it was crowded and service slow. I also recommend La Casa De Pedro across from Watertown Mall, which has delicious food, and outdoor patio dining under the trees, as well as a beautiful dining room indoors.
There are also some places to shop and eat nearby the duplex. We enjoyed the Irish pub on Belmont Street; the hamburgers and sweet potato fries were great, and they had excellent Guinness on draft.
Star Mkt. provides all you need in the way of food, and Mont's kitchen is totally supplied with implements for cooking and eating. There is a gas range, but it was free of any gas fumes. We ate most meals sitting at the small table on the back porch, which was very pleasant, and cooler than indoors.
The weather was hot while we were there and the duplex is not air-conditioned, but there are numerous fans, which made it comfortable for sleeping if you put a fan in the window. We didn't spend much time there in the daytime, anyway. We like historic sites, and the Longfellow House and Mt. Auburn Cemetery are nearby, both very interesting to tour. We took the train into Boston to walk the Freedom Trail, and drove to Quincy to the Adams National Historic Park, which was very worthwhile. You can take the train there, also.
The duplex is very clean, and tastefully furnished, which always makes me enjoy my stay more.
Mont was out of the country but supplied his cell phone number and kept in touch with us. There was a slight mix-up with the person we turned the key in to (she got the key confused with her mail and didn't see it), but that was cleared up okay.
We enjoyed our stay very much, and I would recommend it.
