While you are here, we hope you will feel that Aina Lani is your Hawaiian home ...
We are a retired couple who love to share the happiness and fun of Hawaii with others. If you like, we will be happy to help you create a trip tailored to your interests ... ocean and beaches ... volcano and geological ... stars .... shopping! ... archeological, historic and cultural ... island artists ... flowers and culinary ... farmer's markets ... social .... scientific.
The Big Island is like a small continent--there is an enormous amount to experience here.
We have been here a combined 32 years, exploring the island and enjoying its wonders, and so we have a lot to share. We are avid hikers, and hike in Volcano Park a lot, so we can offer insights on great hikes in the park--you could spend a week hiking there, and never repeat a trail! We love deep nature, wild places, and the ocean. Anne has written a book about Hawaii , Creating Heaven on Earth, with many fascinating stories about this remarkable island.
Anne purchased this cottage in 1996
Wood Valley is Sanctuary.
Wood Valley has a magical quality that eludes words. As you enter the valley, you travel under an archway of tall trees, passing the gemlike little Buddhist Temple in gold and red, and you feel a subtle thrill ... you know you are in a special place.
Wood Valley is hidden and away, like a secret gem. When the sun shines, it shimmers gold across all the green ... when the trade winds blow, it feels free and clear, invigorating ... when the afternoon mists wisp down from the rim, it feels mystical, like a Shangri La.
At dusk and dawn, the pure peace is something you can feel in your heart, sustaining. As the sun sets, a deep stillness takes hold, and the air becomes velvety, richly fragrant with night jasmine, ginger and angel trumpet ... a grace so freely given by nature.
The peace at night under the stars is the deepest we have known. It is mesmerizing to sit under a starry canopy in the stillness, watching the stars travel in their slow arcs, the fragrant night air and peace surrounding you. All is right with the world.
What price, this beauty and peace, this grace and joy? It is so easy to get city experiences in our culture, so very difficult to find places of true purity.
Wood Valley is a place of true purity and sustaining peace.
Please read the descriptions above in the profile and amenities sections.
In addition, there are many enjoyable hikes around here--the valley itself, and some leading into wild forests. We can show you a few.
We have a new coffee mill just a few miles away, where you can see Ka'u coffee being processed. (Ka'u coffee is world class--it recently swept the international competition in world coffees.)
Visit a wonderful studio of miniature, fine-quality Hawaiian dolls, Menehune Studio. These are darling little menehunes... dolls with soul that carry the spirit of Hawaii. Each one is lavished with love and the artful touches of Sabine Hendreshke. These are exceptionally special, crafted with heartful caring, and yet reasonably priced--well worth a delightful visit!
It is very, very healthy here--purest water, glorious sun, perfumed air, rich soil, nurturant rains... nights of brilliant stars, deep renewing silence and dark.
Eating from the organic garden is well-being itself-- very strengthening and life-giving. Our good earth is very sustaining, and the flowers are a joy!
Unedited email ... this family escaped for a much-needed mini vacation:
"My boys really enjoyed picking fresh fruit and veggies!
Thanks so much! It was wonderful to turn out the lights and have the moon be the brightest light at night! We had a wonderful little vacation.”
My wife and I stayed here for our second honeymoon. It could not have been more perfect. Private, beautiful, quiet, wonderful grounds, waterfalls and birds, perfectly appointed with lovely attention to detail by Anne and David. The colors of the cottage are so sensual. Cannot recommend highly enough. And the bed featured in the photo above, the best night's sleep we've had in ages.
Our stay at this lovely cottage was delightful! We found everything we needed and wanted was thoughtfully provided. The atmosphere was restful, colorful and very private. Much thought and skill went into the building of this beautiful cottage. I would highly recommend this home to anyone who likes to be away from it all yet close to hiking at the Volcano National Park, and swimming with the Green Sea Turtles at the Black Sand Beach. The village of Pahala is quite friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Thank You so much David and Anne!
We highly recommend this wonderfully peaceful cottage in the jungle. We picked fruit each day outside our front door. Soothing bird and island breeze noises greeted us each morning and in the evening when we returned from our adventures . Our hosts, David and Anne worked to make our stay on the Big Island perfect.
Nestled in a high valley 15 minutes from the big island’s southeast coast, this inviting cottage provides the setting for a memorable Hawai’i vacation. The owners are imaginative and thoughtful and have designed this cottage with care and attention to detail. Convenient to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Panalu’u Beach Park (reportedly the best black sand beach around), South Point and Papakolea Green Sand Beach. A great base for exploring the immediate region and forays to the west side for snorkeling and hiking. The cottage has everything you’ll need and the only drawback is once settled in you might not want to leave. Walk out your front door to pick fruit for breakfast and explore the garden to find greens and goodies for salads. Two miles from great coffee at Ka’u Coffee Mill. We loved the bed and the natural light that floods the entire space throughout the day. Complete functional kitchen with yellow bamboo outside the window. Comfortable living room window seat for reading and watching the numerous birds that live on the property. An authentic, quiet, out of the way retreat. Highly recommended.
This charming cottage is in one of the most beautiful and quiet parts of the Big Island. Awake to making a healthful breakfast in the kitchen from some of the fruit you've picked the evening prior. Wander down the road to visit the temple or take a dip at the beach. And return to the elegant gardens at Aina Lani Cottage. Grill some fresh fish for dinner before taking a wonderful jacuzzi bath. Be sure to check out the incredible stars if it's a clear night. It's all good! And all the great reviews are true. Don't miss it!
We stayed for 7 nights and enjoyed every moment of our stay. In fact, we enjoyed spending time at the cottage so much that on most days we never left until after lunch or not all all.
It's so relaxing to sit out on the lanai in the morning with a cup of local Ka'u Coffee and listen to the birds and just enjoy the peaceful and beautiful surrounding. We enjoyed walking the property and picking bananas, avocados, macadamia nuts, grapefruit, and more.
At night, you can also sit out on the porch and enjoy watching all the stars that you can't see when you're in areas with light pollution. We saw shooting stars nearly every night, except when it was cloudy. Even then, it was relaxing to sit outside in the peaceful dark.
The bed is extremely comfortable. "Cloud Bed" describes it perfectly. The kitchen is wonderful. We rarely ate out. Instead, we bought fresh fish from a grocery store in Hilo at prices that were crazy cheap, especially compared to what you would pay for in a restaurant. We ate ahi, marlin, swordfish, mahi mahi and more. We were also able to buy some fresh fish from locals in Pahala which was wonderful. They weren't always there, so be on the lookout when you drive through town. We also went to the farmer's market in Hilo and bought some of the best tropical fruit we've every had.
And then there's Anne and David. They are the best hosts you could have. When we needed anything, they were always very accommodating. They're the best source for anything you need to know about the island and were always very nice about answering any of our questions. The binder they have in the cottage also has plenty of information about the best hikes, restaurants, beaches, etc.. Oh, & thanks again David for the sugar cane. It was awesome!
Now, back on the cold, snowy mainland, all I keep dreaming of is being back in the tropical paradise of Aina Lani...If you are reading this and contemplating staying here, look no further. There is no better choice. :-) Aloha!
