Lonesome Dove River Retreat is the perfect place for a family vacation. It is a short walk across the street to the crystal clear Blanco River where you can just sit and enjoy the peacefulness of the flowing water or go for a swim. Fishing with the kids is a favorite pass time of many as is just sitting in a lawn chair in the cool water and relaxing. In the evening you can sit on the porch and enjoy a beautiful hill country sunset with deer grazing on the lawn.

The spacious house is well suited for large groups and will sleep 18 comfortably. The main house has 4 bedrooms and 4 full en-suite bathrooms. This feature make this property a favorite for groups who need to get ready for a wedding at one of the many nearby wedding venues including the Old Glory Ranch just 1 mile down the road.

In the living area of the main house you'll find a large open space with ample seating, and flat screen TV mounted over the electric fireplace. The updated kitchen boasts new stainless steel appliances including double ovens. The dining room features a show-stopping stainless steel table with seating for eight. There is also four barstools for additional seating.

The 1 bedroom guest cabin is included in the price and can sleep an additional 4 guest. There is a king size bed in the bedroom and a queen size sofa sleeper in the living area. There is also a full kitchen, dining area, 2 flat screen TV's and a large covered porch area.

Most guests spend the majority of their time gathered under the outdoor pavilion with ample seating, propane grill, and outdoor fireplace. Lonesome Dove is only 1 mile from the Wimberley town square, 45 minutes from downtown Austin, and about 1 hour from San Antonio.

About Heart of Texas Getaways

The owner's of Lonesome Dove bought the property in 2010 as a vacation rental as well as a place for their own extended family to come and enjoy Wimberley. They remodeled, redesigned and redecorated the home. As travelers who often enjoy vacation rentals, they wanted to ensure their guests had the perfect vacation experience. As tourism in the area grew and the house became more popular with vacationers, the family decided to buy or build more properties. In total, they now own 6 vacation homes or cabins in the Wimberley Valley and plan to build more.

The owners are long time Central Texas residents and have two daughters.

Why Heart of Texas Getaways chose Wimberley

Unfortunately in Wimberley there is no public access areas to the Blanco River at this time. Lonesome Dove has a private river access area specifically for its guests. Enjoy being just steps away from the crystal clear refreshing waters. There are shallow areas that are great for young kids or for adults who want to put a chair in the water and hang out. Walk down stream just a little bit for deeper areas where you can completely submerge yourself.

The are located on opposite sides of the living area and each has its own en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower and double doors leading to the back porch. Bedrooms 3 & 4 are accessed by going out to the back porch. The are attached to the main house but you have to go on to the back porch to access them. It is great for privacy!

Solid 4 stars EXCEPT for miscommunication (Cliffside Cabin was booked during our stay)

The property is lovely! Beautiful home, nice big well-equipped kitchen. Our group (5 couples, most with young kids) occupied all rooms in Lonesome Dove and could not hear the adjacent families that were with us... the beds were comfortable too and the bathrooms very nice! Great pavilion, nice front yard and convenient location to downtown Wimberley. We really enjoyed roasting marshmallows and staying up late talking and playing games by the outdoor fireplace.

The only bad part about the location is that the "river access" is a narrow easement to the Blanco that is between two properties across the street. This provided for some entertainment, but would've preferred a river front location or better access. Also, River Road is very busy! It was dangerous even to cross the street, much less walk to town, without fear of being run over by a car speeding around the hilly corner.

MISCOMMUNICATION!!! The owner failed to notify us that we would be sharing the property with another couple. We fully expected all 5 bedrooms, as the VRBO listing said we would automatically get it since our party was more than 10pp. However our reservation came back for 4 bedrooms, with no clarification that this would NOT include Cliffside Cabin as the VRBO listing led us all to believe. So... we show up thinking we have the whole place then a couple comes along late at night with their reservation for Cliffside Cabin. The owner did NOTHING to remedy their lack of communication.

Heart of Texas Getaways was attentive to our needs up until this point, but failed to offer anything to make up for the misleading VRBO listing. Other than this unfortunate experience, we thoroughly enjoyed our weekend in Wimberley and Lonesome Dove Inn.

Owner's Response: I am very happy to hear you enjoyed most of the amenities this home has to offer. However I am very saddened that you misunderstood the layout of this property and that is caused a less than satisfactory situation for you and your guests. As we very clearly state on this listing, there are two completely separate vacation rentals on this piece of land. The Lonesome Dove (a large 4 bed/4bath home) and the Cliffside Cabin (a small 1bed/1bath cabin). You as the guest have the option of renting just one of the homes or both of them. If you do not add the cabin to your reservation, it certainly can and likely will be rented to other tenants. When you confirmed your reservation, you rented just the large home, this home sleeps 14 people comfortably, so while I completely understand what you are saying about having 10 guests and wanting all 5 rooms, we frequently rent this home to groups of more than 10 guests who do not want to include the cabin. So just because you have that many guests, it does not mean we would automatically force you or charge you for the cabin. When you called me upon arrival upset that you did not have the cabin rented, I did try and do everything I could to help you, but at that point the cabin was rented to someone else and the tenants were in the property. I could not kick them out nor would I ever kick out any guests at any of my homes. Unfortunately my hands were tied on this situation. Again I am very sorry for the misunderstanding I HATE that this happened to you. **UPDATE: We have now changed the way this home can be rented. The cabin will be included in ALL reservations for this home. The cabin will never be rented separately. So this home is now a 5 bedroom/5 bathroom property. You will not share the grounds or any amenities with anyone during your reservation.

Reservation Changes: You are welcomed to add additional guests, pets, and additional nights to your stay at any time. However once the final payment is collected you will not be able to decrease the amount of guests, pets, or length of stay. We cannot refund any monies should you decide to shorten your stay or less guests show up.

Cancellations: If a reservation is cancelled more than 30 days before the arrival date it is fully refundable minus a $50.00 service fee. If a reservation is cancelled within 30 days of the arrival date, full payment is forfeited.

Renter's Responsibility: The renter's failure to possess written confirmation of the reservation provided by Hills of Texas Lodging will not be grounds for canceling the reservation. This includes failure to locate the property, appearance of the property, and access to the property. If you do not receive a confirmation email, or cannot access your check-in information on Homeaway it is your responsibility to contact us to obtain the necessary information for you arrival.
