It is an ideal get away for down time to relax the body, mind & spirit. Opportunities for boating, fishing, crabbing, biking, kayaking, sea glass hunting and more await you. The local residents are a friendly bunch and a treasure trove of information. Historical St. Michaels is just 15 miles away with many restaurants, shopping, and the must-see Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

Captain Randolph Murphy grew up on Tilghman Island as did his parents and their parents! He and his family have been waterman and local waterfowl guides for many generations. His wife, Ann Fegan, from nearby Sherwood went to Tilghman Elementary school along with Randolph. Tilghman is home for them but travel, work, and other interests have taken them away. They feel it is logical to use their home as a rental during the months they are not there. Lots of interesting art from their travels are on the walls as well as local folk art and the cottage exudes good energy with lots of fun color and whimsy.
The cottage originally belonged to Randolph's grandmother, the infamous 'Miss Lil.' Mention her name to an older local and they will know who you mean. Randolph and Ann struck a deal to purchase the cottage when Miss Lil turned 96 and could no longer manage it alone.
The cottage and the property it sits on is always complimented by folks passing by. People often stop just to see the flower gardens. The cottage is in the middle of Tilghman and central to everything. Phillips Wharf, an educational environmental center is nearby. There is access to a small boat ramp at Dogwood Harbor and the Skipjack Fleet. One is available for a short informational sail. The Lady Patty docked at Bay Hundred Restaurant is also a great opportunity to sail on the Bay while Capt. Jeffrey Mathias does all the work.
The cottage is adorable! Perfectly clean, well stocked, very comfortable, good outdoor space. When I realized that the cottage is on the main/only road through Tilghman Island, I worried about road noise. There was none! We arrived slightly ahead of a nor'easter, so our first day was spent reading and watching TV on the long sofa in the living room. Fortunately the weather cleared for a great afternoon at the Maritime Museum, and a delightful sunset sail on the Rebecca Ruark. Captain Wade Murphy is quite the entertainer!
Since we visited in late October, the island was very quiet. We spent most of our time in St Michaels, so we traveled the 15 miles each way several times daily. Also, the weather kept us from doing more outdoor activities.
I think the cottage and the island would be a perfect location in warmer weather. The cottage includes an outdoor grill and bicycles.
The cottage was really cute, very, very clean and well appointed with everything we needed. I would recommend maybe bringing bikes -- there were two bikes provided but one had a flat. It was a nice location -- in a quiet part of Tilghman Island, and a short drive to St. Michaels. I would definitely recommend a stay here.
We rented this charming cottage for Memorial day weekend. What a gem! The caretaker Carol was so helpful and the owner is a phone call away if you have any questions. It's so much bigger than it looks in pictures and very comfortable. It is stocked with everything you need. It was so great waking up and having coffee outside on the swing. There's a wonderful restaurant right across the street and a market down the block. The island is so peaceful and the sunsets are fantastic. I will definitely be back!
Loved the cottage...it had everything we needed for a pleasant stay. It was much bigger than it looked online. The cottage was immaculate...super clean. Fresh linens were great. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and easy to work in. There were bikes on site which was an added bonus. Enjoyed dining at "Two if by Sea"...great breakfast and dinner. Bought delicious homemade cheesecake and red velvet cake from the island store that was to die for :o) Quiet location but close enough to St. Michael's, Easton and Oxford. Enjoyed a delicious meal at a Mexican Restaurant on the main drag in St. Michael's...tiny spot with good drinks...Gina's.
The owner and her helper were great! Very accommodating and pleasant to work with. We can't wait to go back!
The Hard Head Cottage is an Awesome cottage get away! It is immaculate, clean and tidy. The flowers around the property are so beautiful. The cottage is even better in person. We went to Tilghman Island for a family get away and the island did not disappoint. The cottage is within walking/biking distance of restaurants (very good) and a market. Dogwood harbor is right there also. We loved looking at the Skipjacks and were even able to watch one of the locals sort the fresh crabs right off the boat.
Ann has provided everything anyone would need for a terrific stay. The beds are comfortable and the decor in the cottage is lovely. The kitchen is fully stocked with cooking utensils, pots, pans and spices if you are in the mood to cook up a meal.
We immediately felt at 'home'. I highly recommend HHC to anyone looking for a great place to stay for their get away at the Eastern Shore!
From start to finish, this was a wonderful place to stay. Ann was very prompt in responding to questions and helpful in finding things to do and places to eat. We had absolutely no hassles. NONE! As far as the house itself, it was extremely clean and well kept. Everything was generously stocked and was welcoming. Mandy, our host, was friendly and showed us all we needed to know. Both she and Ann made sure we had their numbers in the event we had further questions. The front porch is a fabulous place to greet the day with a cup of coffee. It is only 2 miles from the point; and only about 12 miles or so from St. Michaels if you are into some shopping. We were just wanting to relax. PERFECT!! Tilghman Island is a great place to bicycle, walk, and did I say relax? The people there are very friendly and welcoming and seem to enjoy sharing their wonderland with visitors. If you have a chance, GO, and give Ann a call to reserve this place. I don't think you will be sorry.
