AREA ACCOLADES: Everyone loves Whidbey!
Ranked 3rd Best Island in US by USA Today readers 2014.
Sunset called it of the "20 best Island Escapes" 2014.
Travel & Leisure’s Most Romantic Summer Destinations July 2010 issue featured Whidbey Island as one of their 16 picks world wide: “Though it’s only a 20-minute ferry ride from the Seattle suburb of Mukilteo, this island oasis feels like the Pacific Northwest’s last frontier—a lost-in-time place of towering Cedars and sparkling coves overlooking Puget Sound.”
The area is know as 'The Sunny side of Whidbey' thanks to a third less rainfull than most of the Pacific NW coast. A twelve month 'sunshine study' was done in Sequim in 2010 & 2012 demonstating the dramatic effect of the rainshadow on the days of sun and rain. Here are some highlights from the sunshine studies:
•Winter (Nov-Jan) saw 5X as many mostly sunny days in the shadow vs. Seattle.
•Winter saw only 1/4 as many dreary days in the shadow vs. Seattle.
•Spring (Feb-May) saw the highest number of 'rain shadow' days per month, at nearly 8! During the summer most days are sunny days.
• Coupeville received 20' of rain compared Seattle's 36'
After reading about the 'shadow' it is obvious that you chances of enjoying some sunshine here November through March are about 75% better than along the I-5 corridor! Due to its drier climate and position over stunning coastal areas, it is often an ideal location for many activities, such as beach walks/ hiking, golf, bicycling, wave watching, or simply exploring. What great reasons to consider booking a few days at Ranvik Beach House during the winter months!
It is also called 'The closest place to far away' & for many residents of the Washington I-5 corridor you can get away on a single tank of gas!
Seattle King 5 TV viewers nominated Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve as 'Best Hiking Trail; Best Place to Watch a Sunset; Best Picnic Spot; Best Bird Watching'.
Sunset Magazine has named the Coupeville to Port Townsend as "one of the 5 best ferry rides in the Northwest."
Ebey’s Landiing is billed in local guidebooks as one of the best hikes in Washington. 'This 5.6-mile trail, just five minutes from Coupeville, with mostly dry trails year round, far exceed the expectations of many visitors.'
For a complete guide to visiting Coupeville, including restaurants, lodging and shops contact the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce visitors center at 905 NW Alexander St.
Noise Alert: 95% of the time this is a very quiet area. However ~5% of the time, weekdays only, people in the Admiralty Bay area may experience jet noise when the jets from Whidbey Naval Station practice carrier landings on the Outlying Field 2 miles north of the house. Flyovers typically last 1 to 2 hours. Occasionally they last up to 6 hours and continue for an hour or two after darkness. These flyovers are sporadic and we have no way of knowing when they will occur. Please realize that ALL homes along Admiralty Bay - and indeed much of the northern half of Whidbey - are subject to this.
Many think it is really interesting to get a close up view of these fantastic flying machines. Others find it is real loud and annoying, especially after 10 pm (very rare).
If this happens while you are staying at Ranvik Beach House we suggest one of two options:
1. Stay inside and wait it out. It isn't too bad in the media room with the volume cranked up. We have ear plugs and three sets of noise cancellng headphones in our home for guest use; these mute but don't eliminate the sound.
2. Hop in your car & go somewhere else for a couple of hours.
Chance are that you will not experience this. However, if this would ruin your vacation, you may want to consider renting in some area other than Admiralty Bay / northern half of Whidbey Island. Please understand that we have no control over this and thus cannot offer any sort of refund or compensation to guests who experience flyovers.
Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions or would like us to send you rental contract. Reservations are not secured until we have a signed contract and 50% deposit (payment by check only).
We are a semi-retired professional couple who love the natural beauty of God's creation & enjoy quiet relaxation, fishing, hiking, and travel. We remodeled our first home on Whidbey Island in 1975 and have been built and remodeled number of in the Bellingham area and now again on Whidbey. This architecturally designed, well built built home is a true gem. It was a joy to restore; we added a touch of Cape Cod to it giving it a more cozy feel. The name Ranvik is Lisa's family name in Norway which means Bay of The Ravens.
We appreciate art and architecture & this house offers some of both. The Ranvik Beach House was built by a Seattle architect in 1964 as a family vacaction get-a-way at the height of the Mid-Century Modern era. He developed Admiral's Cove which includes a mile of beach. He had his choice of any building site on which to build his signature beach home. This site was selected for its outstanding orientation to all the breathtaking natural beauty and has the largest beach frontage of all the surrounding homes providing an extra measure of privacy.
The house reflects the state of the construction art at the time with a wonderfully timeless, very functional beach vacation home design. The interior is very unique with shiplap interior & exterior siding and many interesting, angular corners and spaces.
Our total interior remodel in 2012 maintained the home's original, unique character while incorporating the convenience & comforts of a modern home. The tasteful update is in a cozy, bright, contemporary Scandinavian style. We continue to make small improvements as needed.
Since completing the remodel in early 2012 we have found this to be a magical place for relaxation and enjoyment. It is our hope that you will have the same experience while staying here.
Lisa purchased this house in 2011
We lived on Whidbey Island years ago & have been coming back several times a year ever since. So we knew what a wonderful place it is .
For several years we had been looking for a beach home to use as a get-away retreat for family and friends. We considering many areas we concluded the Coupeville / Keystone area. We discovered that this area offered unsurpassed natural beauty along with a wide variety of recreational opportunites. Coupling that with the fact that it has some of the best weather west of the Cascades and is easily accessible by car clinched it for us.
Now that we have had this beach house for over four years; we have no doubt that we made a great choice! This is truly a wonderful place where one can just totally relax. At the same time, if in the mood, there is a wide variety of fun, interesting activites only minutes out the door.
We are confident you will enjoy it as much as our family does!
9-2015 update: Please read our reviews you will see that we're not the only ones who think this is a Magic Place. Over 70 Five Star reviews in less than 4 years with nary a complaint! All our guests have been thrilled and so are we! We're confident you will be also.
There simply is not a nicer beach house in the Coupeville area!
Another unique benefit is the fact that Ranvik Beach House is located in the Olympic rainshadow. The result is third less rain and 30% more sunshine than most of western Washington, Oregon and lower British Columbia. It is appropriately referred to as the 'Sunny Side of Whidbey'.
Like to dine out? You are in luck as as Whidbey Island has been designated a state tourist 'Culinary Destination'! The close and very quaint towns of Coupeville and Freeland offer many excellent dining options from basic fare to gourmet dining. There is great shopping and spas for extra relaxation. Several wineries are close to the beach house with a wineries tour map available at the house.
Having spent many years visiting Whidbey, we are very familiar with the Island and can assist you in gathering current information about tourist sites, outdoor activities, restaurants and special events on Whidbey Island.
If your idea of vacation & relaxation involves physical activities such as walking on the beach, fishing, biking (road or mountain style), day hiking, golf, kite flying, diving, kayaking, boating, or swimming you will find a place to do any of these within 10 minutes of the beach house. There is seasonal salmon and steelhead fishing from shore August - March. Ebey Historical Preserve, Fort Casey and other sites feature a wide variety of interesting places to explore. A near by public pool, basketball court, volleyball lawn an freshwater lake are within steps of the house and are available to guests.

Sunset Magazine has named the Keystone to Port Townsend as one of the 5 best ferry rides in the Northwest.
Our family (three kids ages 5, 9 and 12 and three adults - two over 40 and one very active senior) chose the Ranvik Beach House for our Spring Break trip. Everything was easy to schedule (Dan and Lisa don't accept credit cards so be prepared to send checks via snail mail). Upon arrival, the home took our breathe away. The view of the water is overwhelming.
The home is divided into two separate "wings" with the kitchen and dining great room in the middle. There are two bedrooms and a small but full bath along with the laundry room in one wing and a bedroom, large full bath and media room in the other. All the rooms have king beds (which is not easy to find in a rental house) and the single room with the large bathroom (unattached) has a nook-like bed which was a perfect hiding place for our teenager. There is plenty of room to store your stuff. The Media room is equipped with a huge TV, cable and tons of movies. The house had a great wi-fi signal as most days we had anywhere from 6-8 devices on the network (phones, tablets and computers). We drove from Seattle. Once you arrive on the island the drive to the Ranvik home is about 25-30 mins. We brought most of our food and drinks from home, once settled in, we realized a few items we forgot a couple items. The store is just a 10 min drive and has everything you would need however it is a tad more expensive than at home.
The beach is incredible! It was chilly during Spring Break but that didn’t keep us from miles of walks on the beach. We did catch a glimpse of a couple seals and at least one bald eagle a day. We were not prepared for the rocks on the beach. That is truly the only thing we wished was different about the visit. With small children, they want to play in the sand however the rocky beach leaves little opportunity for sand castle building.
Dan let us know the jets were likely to be flying one of the evenings during our trip. This was really cool (and VERY loud) but we were expecting it so as sat out on the deck and enjoyed every minute of it. There were 3 in 3 waves of flights by a group of jets, each lasting about 45 minutes with a 2 hour break in between; the noise didn’t keep us awake. For us it was an awesome treat to have our own air show (reminded us the freedom we our military affords us)!
The documentation (check-in/check-out) between what was sent what was at the house had minor discrepancies but Dan quickly answered our questions by phone. Thank you, we will return! Stephanie
First of all, Dan and Lisa are the most helpful and gracious hosts. My family and I stayed over the Christmas holidays and they went as far as making sure the Christmas packages I had to have mailed to the house were safely waiting for us (the neighbors kept an eye on them for us, very helpful and friendly as well). They were easy to reach if we had any questions, even on Christmas Eve! Lovely people.
The house has a great setup for multiple couples/families - the bedrooms are spaced out enough if you have small children that cry in the night/wake up early so no one else is disturbed. The TV room is also nested in the corner of the house so you can watch movies and still feel comfortable that you aren't waking anyone up. The ambience of the house itself is beautiful, peaceful and cozy. If you live in WA this is a great getaway house, and if you're from out of state this is the perfect house to experience the beautiful scenery while still having access to the surrounding area (hiking, kayaking and exploring the town/Coupeville).
It was also a great setup for my son to play outside while I stayed inside and cooked, the window wall spans the house and gives a clear and beautiful view to the back porch, fire pit, and magnificent beach and beyond. The beds are so so comfortable and big, and in the second bedroom there are a lot of toys for young kids to play with (my son is 2). Everything was very clean, stocked and easy to navigate. My brother mentioned that he would fly back out to Washington just to stay at this house again!
Thank you for everything Dan and Lisa and best to you in the New Year.
We had such a wonderful week staying at this house. Literally steps from the beach. Amazing views of the ocean and mountains. The owners thought of everything. Very roomy and comfortable. We'll be back again.
The house was immaculate, well stocked, and very comfortable. The view cannot be beat. Very quiet location and close to markets and other locations. Loved it!
We watched porpoises glide by every morning. We enjoyed the quiet location right on the beach. The owners thought of everything. Quality throughout the home.
This is a WOW! We loved the view and light and air and quiet. The house is uniquely designed to capture it all. It is at a great spot on the beach and fully equipped with everything, of the best quality, you could ever need. We would love to spend more time there someday.
We returned recently from our second stay at this lovely beach house. It is right on the beach with fabulous views. The house has lots of amenities. It is full of high end touches. The kitchen has all the items to cook for yourself or bbq. We made s'mores in the firepit with our granddaughters and hunted beach glass right in front of the house. We rode bikes down to Fort Casey and explored. then relaxed on the deck and watched the sunset. If the beach is your happy place come for a visit and enjoy.
Not only is the house beautiful but the area surrounding it is one of the most scenic locations in Washington with fun, interesting activities for people of all ages!
While you are here you may want to visit the historic town of Coupeville just 12 minutes away to check out the historical museum, some great little clothing shops, antique stores, a gem of a beach store and of course great restaurants. 2.5 miles from the beach house is the Keystone Underwater Park for diving, a State-Federal wildlife preserve for birding and beach walking, and the Admiralty Lighthouse & Fort Casey for the historians. Deception Pass Boat Tours & Olympic National Park less than an 1 hour away.
Arboretum, library, playground, marina, churches, winery tours, antiquing, beachcombing, bird watching (200+ species in area), walking, biking, whale watching, scenic drives, freshwater, bay, & beach fishing, ATM/bank, laundromat, massage therapist, medical services, groceries, hospital, many festivals. Great for naps too
