Stylish apartment in one of the original 17th century buildings on the Place aux Herbes, in the center of historic Uzès. Freshly renovated with all modern amenities, but retaining the calm and charm of the original space.
Tastefully and comfortably appointed, this is a space that invites relaxation - a cool retreat within the bustling center of this historic town.
Each Saturday and Wednesday the famous Uzès markets are held in the beautiful Place aux Herbes, overlooked from the apartment - close enough to sense the bustle, but nicely removed to provide quiet and sanctuary.
Place du Marche - our apartment in the heart of Uzes - provides the perfect base from which to enjoy the history, gastronomy, scenic beauty and activities of the Gard region. Uzes itself is a town rich in history and culture, sitting calmly with authority atop its hill overlooking the pretty Alzon River.
Within 10 kms you will discover rustic villages, boutique wineries, a rich variety of local and international cuisine and produce, solitary walks and rides, quiet streams, majestic rivers and sweeping vistas. An hour will deliver you to the historic centres of Avignon, Nimes, Arles, Orange and Beaucaire-Tarascon, and the vast expanses of the Cevennes National Park and the Parc Natural de Camargue.
A little further afield are the beaches of Montpellier, and a suite of justifiably famous and much-photographed towns such as Gordes, Rousillon, Saint Remy-de-Provence and Vaucluse.
Famous for its medieval heritage and mellow atmosphere, with narrow streets and elegant 16th and 17th century mansions, Uzes is a hidden gem in the south of France.
First settled over 2,500 years ago, Uzes first grew to prominence as a provincial centre under Roman settlement around 120 BC, when the town was known as Ucetiae, located on the same site as the current town centre. From here, the Romans built the extraordinary aqueduct to deliver water to Nimes, 20kms away, leaving later generations to wonder at the grandeur and elegance of the magnificent Pont du Gard.
Though not spared the traumas of the religious strife afflicting much of France during the Reform period, a cast of wealthy nobles, traders, administrators, agriculturalists and industrial innovators has provided Uzes with resilience and recuperative powers over the centuries, and the town has benefited from church and royal patronage throughout much of its existence. Illustrating the town's importance in the Middle Ages, Charles VIII owned the King's Tower that forms part of the castle dominating the town's centre.
Industries in silk, pottery and ceramics provided wealth and influence.
The Duchy of Uzes, the first Duchy of France, has maintained a special place in French history right through to the present day.
Today, Uzes is accessible and comfortable, but has lost none of its deep sense of history. This is a very special town in a very special part of France.
Sasha Rimmington is the manager of this property for Julie and Andrew, a professional couple based in Sydney, Australia. With both their adult children now living in Europe, Julie and Andrew divide their time and work between France, Australia and Japan.
Sasha is a professional property manager, based in St-Quentin-la-Potterie, a few kilometres from Uzes. Sasha is the primary contact for enquiries in relation to the property and for guests while staying in Uzes.
Julie and Andrew first visited Uzes in 2011, and fell in love with the charm and pace of this beautiful part of Provence. 3 years later, they decided that Uzes was so special they would like to make it a permanent part of their lives, and to create a space to share with like-minded people. Julie returned on her own to finalize the sale, and, with the help of Sasha, spent 6 weeks organizing the renovation and decoration of this lovely apartment. Her aim was to provide a welcoming and elegant place for both couples and single people to be able to feel part of the quiet pace of the village life of Uzes, in a truly amazing historical building.
Sasha Rimington (Manager for Julie Want) purchased this apartment in 2013
The incredible location, the light as it changes through the day - bringing to subtle life the stone wall opposite our favourite armchair - the best place to sit and sip a rose and contemplate life. The busy Saturday markets right below, revealed when you open the heavy wooden shutters to let the morning stream in.
A calm and elegant space in a beautiful location, right on the Place aux Herbes. Being able to look out on the daily activities of the town centre, and feel part of village life from a private space is just so relaxing and special.
We have just spent 3 of the most magical weeks in the heart of Uzes in this truly delightful apartment. It is ideally located right within the Place aux Herbes which is where everything happens. Restaurants too numerous to count all within 5 - 10 mins walking distance; as well as cafes, boulangeries and shops. A most magnificent market every Saturday is not to be missed and right at the front door.
The owners have lovingly furnished their apartment making sure that everything is provided to make it an ideal home away from home.
Sasha ensured that the property was clean and well maintained on a regular basis and was at hand to provide assistance when needed and advice on where to go and what to see to make sure we had a wonderful experience.
There are so many fabulous places to visit nearby, in fact too numerous to mention however the Pont du Gard is a must. Having said that there is so much that happens, seemingly spontaneously within Uzes itself and especially within the Place aux Herbes that venturing outside of Uzes is not essential to having a wonderful time.
We highly recommend this as a place to stay - both in regards to the apartment itself and location.
We definitely look forward to staying again in the future.

We have been to Paris, Italy, Ireland and all over the USA and this is one of our favorite apartments. The pictures are accurate with an eclectic collection of furniture, yet very welcoming. On Saturdays, your front door is a back door to one of the best market days we have experienced. Fish, meat, nuts, spices, produce, fromage, charcuterie, flowers, linens, and so much more! We filled our basket and the kitchen allowed us to cook our own meal of duck breast, fresh figs, potatoes and more.
There are noises from the birds that arrive at dusk into the trees of the most beautiful ‘place’ (plaza) we have seen. The place is at your doorstep with several restaurants, cheese shops, meat shops, and boulanger within minutes of your front door.
The hard part is the garage. It is free parking in a very narrow garage with multiple entrances for the car and pedestrian access. A little confusing, so pay close attention to the directions. That said, Sasha was great! She was always available by phone and email same day for questions or suggestions.
We highly recommend this apartment and enjoyed our week in Uzes!
August 28 through September 9, 2016
My wife and I have visited Uzes three times now and the apartment owned by Julie and Andrew Want overlooking the Place aux Herbes is the best place to experience this vibrant and hospitable town.
We met Sasha Rimington, the property manager for Julie and Andrew, on the Boulevard Gambetta and Sasha directed us to the underground parking garage, helped us get our bags up the street and into the apartment. We were very pleased that the apartment was exactly as we had expected, perhaps even better. Sasha had even included a chilled bottle of rose in the fridge. Thank you Sasha for everything!
Other reviews have described the convenience of the location so I won't repeat. But, you are right in the heart of Uzes and everything you need to have a wonderful stay is within a few blocks walk. The early morning walk one of several boulangerie said around the market square for the day's baguette or croissant was especially pleasant. The Boucherie just off the market square have wonderful prepared gratins, poule rotie, other meats, cheeses, and charcuterie so you can have a real French lunch without all the prep... and then a nap after.
We had a wonderful time and are looking forward to coming back to Uzes soon and will definitely stay here again.
Thanks for everything, Julie and Sasha. You were both very helpful and accommodating.
The property manager Sasha was great. She was very helpful and was nice to have someone that spoke English. It had good amenities and well stocked with supplies. We liked having a washing machine as we had been on road for three weeks. The apartment was comfortable and well furnished. It was nice to have parking even though it was not nearby and quite a walk. It was good having parking however since the town parking situation was difficult.
Our biggest complaint was the noise. It was very noisy day and night. The square had a constant roar and we had trouble sleeping as the bedroom was on a alley that everyone walked to the square on ( drunk and yelling at night). The sound all night long made it hard to sleep with windows open and too hot to sleep with windows closed. Then early early in morning every morning the cafes were setting up there tables yelling and banging. This is not the place if you want to relax.
Town is very busy when we were there and hard to find a place to eat. I would not recommend going in August too many people and lots of children.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful apartment in the charming Place Aux Herbes. Sasha was obliging and helpful in local knowledge. There was plenty to do and see in Uzes and as we didn't have a car it was easy to travel by bus to Nimes, Pont du Gard and St Quentin du Poterie. We loved buying in the markets and sitting having a drink in the Place aux Herbes.
This delightful property more than met our expectations with regard to its beautiful interior and fantastic location. The convenience of the nearby dedicated undercover car park coupled with Sasha's helpful welcoming presence made arrival and settling in a breeze. Once in the apartment we found the view over the town square with its lovely trees and vibrant Saturday market to be a true delight. We enjoyed a range of wonderful, walking distance restaurants including Au Petit Jardin (Live Jazz on Saturday evening) and excellent Pizza at Le Zanelli. Being a little intrigued by history we enjoyed our visits to both the Duke's Palace and the nearby Medieval Garden.
Sitting in the main town square (Place Aux Herbes) sipping wine at Terriors restaurant is a great way to relax as you watch the world go by. We can highly recommend this property.
