Overview

About the property

One bedroom and bath with river access and room to explore.

The Rookery is a unique 2.7 acre property with 250 feet of Wild and Scenic Rogue River frontage. There is the opportunity to hear wild turkeys in the morning, share the view with a few deer and step into the river to fish for steelhead, salmon and pike. This is an opportunity to loose yourself to nature and take a break from the demands of the technological world. The Wren Den is an electronics-free zone. Board and lawn games are available for your use.

The cabin has a compact refrigerator, microwave, electric skillet and coffee pot, electric heat, overhead fan and wood-burning fireplace. There is a gas grill on the porch. The grounds provide access to the river, fire pit and chairs on the patios for relaxation, a zip line for youngsters and horse shoes for all.

A two night minimum stay is required but we believe that you will choose to stay longer to take advantage of all the activities available in the area. Grants Pass restaurants and farmer’s market, the Applegate Valley wineries and Cave Junction ’s Marble Caves and Great Cats World Park as well as fishing, white-water rafting and the hiking trails that abound.

We are always ready to provide information or answer questions regarding the property, area restaurants and local activities so plan on nesting with us for a week-end, a week or even longer!

About Mary Shields

I am retired from the world of education and now able to concentrate on what I love best-finding new projects that allow me to use my various DIY skills to repurpose or find new purpose in things around me. I love to garden and work with stained glass, sew and read and even make soap and lotion. Now that I have land to play with, I have even established a vegetable garden that goes beyond patio tomatoes! I have come a long way from Kirkland, Illinois across more world wide byways than I could have imagined. But that would be a story for over a glass of wine!

Mary Shields purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Mary Shields chose Southern Oregon

My home was built in the 1950's and used as a fishing retreat by Hollywood actors including Howard Duff and Ida Lupino. It was built to last in a workman's fishing camp style. The care taken by the builder is evident in the detail work done on cabinets and desks. Unfortunately it had been abandoned for four years prior to my purchasing it. My son and I have been working to revive the grounds, refresh the buildings and still maintain the vintage charm that makes it such a wonderful place to share with family and friends.

What makes this cabin unique

The barn wood walls tell the story of the floods that have fashioned the Rogue into what it is today. I awake to the call of the wild turkeys, watch the deer amble through the yard and hope they aren't so hungry that they will sample even those plants rated as deer resistant! Every day the river is there bringing a sense of calm and the promise of something new to experience for me and each rafter and fishermen on the river that day. It is a life lived outside or snuggled up with a book in front of the fire, full of hard work or long dreamy hours, of Tom Sawyer days with no agenda or opportunities to explore the many activities available in the surrounding towns and country side,

LOVED IT!!!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cabin and surrounding area. Everything we needed. Loved meeting Mary she was great and gave us tips on what to do and where to eat. We would definitely stay here again. Watching the wild turkey's and deer - sitting by the river - a great way to relax and disconnect from the outside world. I would recommend this lovely cabin it's close to everything you may want to do without having to stay in a hotel. Quiet and peaceful!!!! AWESOME!!!!

Loved it

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay very much. About 15 minutes from Grants Pass. Very peaceful country setting. The cabin has everything you could need: mini fridge, microwave, hot plate, kirig coffee maker, BQQer. Mary provides tons of stuff in the cabin: coffee and fixings, welcome snacks, a bunch of games, a few kid toys, towels, plates, silverware, knifes & cutting board, firewood. You couldn't ask for a better place to stay. Will stay here again!

Quiet, in the woods, Cozy Cabin!

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much! Mary welcomed us, then gave us our privacy. The big, rock fireplace was a highlight for us every evening. We were out and about most of the time, enjoying local vineyards, Jacksonville and family camping about 10 miles nearby. Rustic, cozy, clean and supplied with very nice basics. Saw wild turkeys and deer a few times. A fun getaway! It is about 10 miles from town, Grants Pass.

This place is perfect for a get away. We had an amazing time. The isn't much cell service at all, but made our trip even better. It's set it with just about everything you'll need. The river is beautiful! Very please. We will be back very soon. Thank you Mary!
