Stay in a quiet, laid back beach community. Give living in Florida a real try!
Deby was a great, welcoming host especially considering we arrived in downpour! The place was lovely with a wonderful, private outdoor area. Everything was newly redone inside, and very clean. The location is absolutely ideal - short walk out to the beach or to the river side of the island and short drive into St. Augustine. Would greatly recommend Deby's place!!!
This beautiful hideaway is truly a gem. Its only a block from the ocean and minutes away from downtown St Augustine and all the sites. You have access to a private beach entrance that will not fail to impress you with its beauty. This place provides you with everything you need except for your food. Deby and John have done an outstanding job with this place. Im am truly happy that i stayed there instead of getting a hotel. I could not not recommend a better place to stay on a vacation if you are in the St Augustine area. Try it out and i believe you will have as much fun as i did if not more.
In the photos this place looks pretty small, which I was okay with because I was looking for a simple cheap vacation. But once we got there I realized it was much bigger than expected. There's plenty of room. The only thing lacking was a table to eat at. I went here with my boyfriend, aaron, for our first vacation together alone. It was quiet and they had everything we needed. The beach is very very nice. It wasn't packed, plenty of room between me and the next person, and the waves were perfect. There were tons of seashells, also sand. The sand was really cool to play with if you haven't ever been to a golden beach. Obviously sand is just very small rocks, but the sand was so colorful when you put it on your skin. It was fascinating. I was expecting the beach to be covered in seashells to the point you couldn't go there without shoes but there was only a small section that was packed with seashells. I collect seashells. I mean you could literally make a mountain of seashells. It was cool. Aaron really liked the ocean, I'm not a huge fan of the water, but he could walk out there a good distance and still only be waist deep. I actually got over my fear of the ocean here.
I also love weird shops, so we went to st augustine, and there were at least 200 shops. You could very well spend all day there and still have to go back tomorrow to check them out. They had resturants scattered into the wide array of shops. I absolutely loved the st augustine shops.
We came prepared because we knew we had to cook on the grill, and since we don't have a ton of money for going out to eat for every meal. We made some really easy foil meals, and if you haven't heard of those you should really do a Google search because they are delicious.
There were plenty of amenities, probably some stuff that I would buy for my guests if I had a vacation home. Like poopori, a spray that you spray in the toilet after you go poop, me and aaron got a kick out of that. And some lavender pillow mist. Just some pretty unique things that they supplied. The tub was reasonably big, and the outside shower had its own privacy hedge, and it could be turned to hot or cold water.
Deby really paid attention to our needs, and even before we arrived she gave me a birthday gift ( i turned 20 on this vacation) she gave me some cupcakes and balloons which was thoughtful. If you're looking for a simple sweet vacation next to the beach and 10 min from shops then this is for you.
We recently relocated to the First Coast, and needed a place to live for a week due to a delay in our closing...We found a quiet, little slice of coastal heaven at the Barrier Island Retreat!!! We were traveling with our pup, cat, teenage daughter and a U'Haul full of possessions. Deby & Johnny extended the warmest hospitality to us, making us feel right at home!!
As for accommodations, we were absolutely delighted -- the apartment is quiet, clean, and just right for a family of three and a couple fur babies. Plenty of towels and blankets and closet space!!
We loved the fact we were less than a 10 minute walk to see beautiful sunrises and relaxing sunsets on a quiet, clean, dog-friendly beach!
Overall, our week at the retreat was amazingly relaxing and helped to transition us to the new FL lifestyle!!! We will most certainly be back -- and will recommend to family and friends!
When we arrived at Barrier Island Retreat, Deby meet us and was so kind. The place was very clean. The sectioned off part of the garage has a microwave, a really good size fridge, toaster and coffee pot. BBQ utensils. There was everything in the kitchen they had plenty of paper plates, paper towels, bowls, cups and plastic knives, forks and spoons for their guests but I had brought our own as I always do. Oh there was no kitchen sink but we filled the coffee pot in the bathroom every evening and it was ready to just turn on in the morning. A gas grill is outside for one to use but we never used it for the restruants were really close to the house.
The restuarnt's we ate at and had great service was:
Reef, Martins (twice) Kingfish Grill, Schooner's and pizza at Vinney's
The house is on a very quiet street and the beach is only a short walk away but you have to cross A1A. We walked to the beach on several occassions, but there is also a very nice place which you can drive too and park it's a very short distance from the house it has a picnic table and they are in the process of building bathrooms.
It's a very short drive to the Historic City of St. Augustine. The Castillo de San Marcos is a great place to go, the entire city is pet friendly, we were even able to take our little rocky (our dog) to a few restuarnts if we ate outside.
The beach is known for being pet friendly and it's excellent shelling, and everyone we met on the beach spoke to you and we even carried on a conversation with several people, meet one young teenager (Jake) who was very nice he came up to us and we talked and learned about surfing, I took a few photo's of him on his surf board and then e-mailed them to him.
I talked to Johnny twice while he was out working in his garden, I learned a lot about what they can grow and when, I just love to work in the dirt and see things grow for we have a raised garden here and Johnny planted watermelon seeds while we were there and I can't wait to see a photo of the vines and watermelons.
All and all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable week.
Thanks Deby and Johnny for all you did, We will not forget you both or the time we spent there.
We had a wonderful time, this is a pet friendly place & surrounding neighborhood is as well. Walked the beach everyday & went swimming as well. Johnny & Deby are very nice friendly people & we were very grateful we found such a great place to stay at a reasonable price🌻 Thank you so much💗
Deby welcomed us & showed us where everything was. There is a nice small garden with chairs & loungers -good after a busy day sightseeing. It was very easy & quick to get into St Augustine which we loved. Plenty of information about where to go etc in the property. It was very clean & inviting with coffee & creamer in the fridge. There is a microwave, toaster & coffee machine in the curtained off kitchen area & lots of plates etc. We did manage to cook a meal in but there was no table to eat at. Would be a good addition Deby. All in all we enjoyed our stay.
