I grew up in the South (Charleston, S.C. and Pensacola, FL) and graduated from the University of Alabama. I moved to the Florida Keys in 1976 where I owned and operated a dive business until retirement in 1999.
Kim is from Calhoun, GA and graduated from Valdosta State University with a degree in accounting. She became a CPA and worked in the "corporate world" for several years before retiring and traveling (pretty extensively) with her mother after the death of her father. She moved to the Keys in 1990 and became a dive boat captain and scuba instructor. She and I met and were married in 1999.
In late 1999 both of us retired. We bought a 47' Marine Trader trawler and cruised in the islands of the Bahamas until Kim's knees forced us to give it up. Still loving the people, ocean, beaches, and waters of the Bahamas, however, we bought a home on Cat Island and now spend most of our time there.
Bob loves fishing, diving, flying his little ultralight FIB, beach walking (scavenging) and hanging out with friends. Kim loves cooking, diving, (cares NOT for fishing !) crossword (or any kind of) puzzles, good wine, and Tiki -Time.
Bob and Kim Tilman purchased this apartment in 2006
Since buying this property we have become very close with the local residents in the small community of Port Howe. It is a close-knit, friendly group of people who are happy, helpful and supportive of their neighbors. Church and community functions and benefits are commonplace. Among it's constituents are some very good artists, woodworkers, farmers, cooks, fishermen, and shopkeepers. Most were born here and have a long family history as well as a wealth of local knowledge.
Although the yard was covered in stickers and we hadn't yet even seen the inside of the house, the first time we saw this property we knew it was for us . The view is simply incredible ! To top that off, the consistency of the weather (which is dominated by prevailing breezes coming from deep water 1/2 mile away) makes it a most pleasant place to live year-round. The convenience if having world-class fishing and diving less than a mile away from your door doesn't hurt either !
The other reviewers were spot on in raving about the Tilmans' Port Howe home and in describing the owners as being exceedingly thoughtful and accommodating. Literally I could not have asked for more. Of note was the Tillman's willingness to take a guest such as myself with them to various social events so that one could meet many of the locals. Introductions were made and one felt at home very quickly . This was a great way to get a feel for the community. Another point to be made is that Bob is a very accomplished waterman - so if your interests are either diving or fishing there probably is no better place to be and no one better to be with. ! Lastly, Bob will help you arrange to get a rental car at a reasonable rate and that is a big plus.
The moment we were picked up by our hosts, Bob and Kim, we knew we were with the right people. They are down to earth, caring gracious hosts, and saw that we got a car rental and groceries.
The house is beautifully maintained and has a fully supplied kitchen, comfortable bed and futon. The a.c. in the bedroom cooled the whole place comfortably. The apartment is on the lower level and pretty private. However, if you needed anything Bob was there for you.
But, the setting is what will get you. It is set on a gorgeous beach with a tiki hut, perfect for evening cocktails and morning coffee. A hammock made for reading and sleeping right on the beach.
The island of "nothing to do", became the island of lots to do, beach combing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, boating, restaurants and bars of locals, massage, and though busy, it was the most peaceful place on earth.
The locals are amazing! They treat you like family.
Thank you Kim and Bob for sharing not only your house, but your local wisdom, your 🐟𗰬 your frienship and a journey of tranquility never felt before. Your peace of heaven and your friendship will never be forgotten. Amy and Erik
When I decided to go to the Bahamas for the first time, I was hoping to get "off the grid". I was hoping to un-plug from my daily, pressure-filled life and spend some peaceful time in a beautiful place. I did a lot of homework and settled on the Tilman's property in Port Howe. What a great choice! The property is very secluded and offers unbelievable access to a long, idyllic beach that is virtually private.
The first floor apartment is not fancy, but it has all of the essentials for a comfortable stay. The pictures online were accurate and captured the character of the place well. One of the things I loved the most were the various sitting areas and nooks on the property to relax and enjoy. Having spent nine days at this property, I was able each day to sit and enjoy a little different view--the beachside tiki hut, the two covered veranda areas, the garden work area...every angle of the property was more beautiful than the next! Although my goal was rest and relaxation, I was able to do some light hiking up and down the beach, walk among nearby ruins of old buildings, and kayaking in the bay (kayak provided!).
I could go on and on about the amazing experiences on Cat Island (the Hermitage (a MUST see), the sharks and sting rays, the boating, the fishing tournament), but probably the most enjoyable and unexpected part of my trip was the people. Bob and Kim Tilman were wonderful hosts--they gave me all of the privacy I desired but were at the ready with any question or need that I had. We became fast friends and by the end of my trip enjoyed some great times together. The other people I met, including ex-patriates and natives, were extremely friendly. I felt completely welcomed by everyone I met.
If you are looking to get off the grid and enjoy a simpler, slower pace of life with some great folks and incredible weather and beauty, you must choose the Tilman's place on Cat Island!
We have been here twice for 10-14 days. The total noncommercialism of this island goes hand in hand with paradise. Pristine water and beaches to relax and snorkel/dive; plantation ruins to explore; freshly caught or made local fare to experience. The people are so friendly and helpful as are the hosts, Bob and Kim. The apartment is very clean, with all necessary amenities. Lots of windows and comfy bed! Sound too good to be true? Not this time!! Looking forward to next stay this February.
Your own private beach no foot prints in the sand. My idea of an island vacation. The apt is beautiful everything you could want. Bob and Kim are great hosts. Will help you with local information but will give you all the privacy you want. There is no way to describe the beautiful scene outside your window. There is a small market fairly close and a few neighbors scattered around, but it feels very secluded. Looking toward to returning in 2016.
If you enjoy walking beaches, fishing, diving, snorkeling, and relaxing in a hammock with a tropical breeze blowing over you, then this is a place for you!!
We have stayed in this clean and comfortable apartment during the months of March, June, and October. All seasons are equally as beautiful. The only difference being the kind of fish you want to catch! With extraordinary visibility and gorgeous pristine reefs, we believe that Cat Island has the best diving and fishing we have ever encountered.
In addition to being lovely, fun people, the owners are very experienced boaters, divers, and fishermen.
Our encounters with the local people were very friendly. Many are craftsmen and artists, so you can purchase handcrafted souvenirs with a local flare.
Because Cat is somewhat of a remote island, you have to plan ahead in your packing. The local grocery store does have essentials but there are no Walmarts, Walgreens or super markets on Cat Island. Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, mosquito repellant and snacks because the great outdoors is where you will want to be!
