Snowman Cottage -- Southport Enjoy water views of Cape Harbor and the open ocean from nearly every room in this 3-bedroom/2-bath cottage! The cottage has hardwood floors with area rugs. It comes fully equipped with cable TV and VCR in the living room and a well-equipped kitchen including a lobster pot, or course, microwave and a washer/dryer. It is just a short walk to the Newagen Seaside Inn where you can enjoy the amenities that include tennis courts and a pool at no cost. You supply the linens. Sorry, no pets!
During your stay, partake in the Boothbay Region’s wonderful art galleries, shopping, and the many restaurants. While here, rent a sailboat or kayak, or better yet, bring your own. Join a boat cruise, a whale-watching excursion, or go deep-sea fishing. Play golf on the region's newly redesigned 18-hole course. Hike a nature trail of which there are several, bike around the island and surrounding areas, or just relax in the serene natural setting of coastal Maine.
We are approximately 3 hours from Boston, 3 hours from Arcadia National Park and Bar Harbor, 1 hour from Camden/Rockland and 35 minutes from Bath/Brunswick. It is about an hour’s drive to the famous L.L. Bean store and the great outlets in Freeport if you like to shop.
If you like the beach, it is available at the end of Southport Island. It’s a short drive to Southport Beach, a small, but sandy public beach close by the Hendricks Head Light. There is also a small general store on the island, but a full service supermarket is available in Boothbay Harbor.
The interestingly named Cuckolds Lighthouse, at the entrance to Newagen Harbor, is still an active lighthouse. It is said to be named after a point of land on the Thames River in England, granted to a Londoner to sooth his anger after King John had an affair with his wife. The lighthouse has many stories. One of which is that around the lighthouse the ledges around it are called “collector ledges” as it has been the site of many boating mishaps and marine rescues. It is a beacon to generations of fishermen, and a chosen burial site for some, including our region's much beloved Leland Snowman. Although Leland never lived in this “Snowman” cottage, family members have owned it in the past, thus its name.
Keywords: Ocean Edge cottage, open water views from almost every room, private, quaint,This cute cottage is on a dead end road on peaceful Southport Island. It is only a few feet from the water! Wonderful views abound of the open ocean, boats in the harbor and large vessels out to sea. Located at Cape Newagen Harbor, this cottage blends old and new for a light, airy feeling. The living/dining room has spruce floors and a picture window looking out to the sea, directly at Cuckhold’s Light. Charming and spacious master bedroom on the second floor windows looking right out to see with an unobstructed view of the Cuckhold’s Light. The inviting back yard is private, nicely grassed and goes right down to the ocean with a boathouse and deck. Enjoy sitting out on the open deck with chairs and a table to watch the boats go by, or enjoy the starlit sky in Maine in the evening. Sit on the open deck facing Cuckhold’s Lighthouse to enjoy great views of the Atlantic Ocean, nearby islands, and the harbor.
I chose this particular house for its location. My children and I spent every summer here for a number of years much to their delight. We loved to use the swimming pool at the Inn and have spirited family tennis matches.. Wr also moored our sailboat out in the harbor and used the dock for our dinghy.
There are lots of things to do. Walking on the nature paths is a favorite, reading on the deck, and using the Southport Library which is open everyday except Sundays during the summer as well as some evenings. Kayaks and canoes can be launched directly from the ocean's edge at the cottage. Use of any of the Inn's ammenities at no charge is also a plus. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park is only 165 miles away. LLBean and lots of other outlet shops in Freeport is only a 45 minute drive. The cottage is only 20 minutes from the heart of Boothbay Harbor for whale watches, deep sea fishing, seafood restaurants. and various boat trips. The cottage is centrally located for many other day trips including Bath Iron Works Shipyard or the marine museum.
This house is so well suited to anyone wishing to enjoy the quiet of Maine as well as see all the sights. Boothbay is lovely as well as Wiscasset which is also nearby. We had a fabulous time shopping and eating tons of lobster!
Five of us stayed very comfortably and the owner was so hospitable! She made us feel at home. Everything was provided for us. The photos, listing descriptions and locations provided in the listing were honest. That says a lot to me! The house was clean and we had the most wonderful neighbors you would want. I would recommend this home to anyone and everyone!! A fantastic place to stay!!
Arrived at the cottage for a month lease and found the following: Yard unkept with weeds growing up against the house about a foot high, deck and deck furniture filthy, entry door screen torn open allowing flys and bees in, no screens on living room windows, syrup drippings on dining table and house in a generally unclean condition. Called Manager and Owner regarding the condition. No response from them for 2 days. Bought $50 of rugs and cleaning supplies to make the house livable(Owner did reimburse us for the $50 after my compliant) On first Friday there, water heater quit working, called Manager and Owner, no resonse. Finally called Plumber myself and got fixed. Finally heard from Owner on Monday(4 days later). At end of second week, yardman showed up and was taking deck furniture. Said they were going to replace it, but couldn't say when replacements would come. We had to ask that he leave old furniture until new comes, otherwise we would have no deck furniture!! Plumbing issues prevail, shower drips, tub doesn't drain unless lever is held down, etc. My point is, if you lease this house, you are on your own, You will get no help from the so called Manager(never returned a call) and mostly excuses from the Owner why she couldn't respond sooner. We just gave up and handled issue ourselves. On the positive side, the view is great and Inn next door is a big plus. Its just a shame that these good points are offset by the mismanagement of the property.
My wife and I stayed at this rental property for the third time beginning in September, 2014. Everything about the property and it's location were top notch to say the least. Top notch except for the beds. The king in the upstairs bedroom has (had?) a foam mattress that funnels you toward the center. If you wanted to turn onto your side, you had to roll uphill. Getting up in the morning was like trying to get up out of a huge cotton ball. My wife got along well there as she is a "back sleeper". I went to the bedroom next room over and found the queen bed very much more supportive and I slept well on that mattress. The twins on the first floor tended to send you to one side or the other as they felt a bit high in the center.
We like the place well enough to go back again but would like to speak to the owner about those mattresses.
The cottage comfortably fit our family of 6! The amenities at the Newagen Inn were amazing perks- hammovks by the sea, a heated swimming pool, a great restaurant with fantastic happy hour deals. We visit Boothbay every year for a few days and spending the whole week there was so nice. We finally had a chance to visit the aquarium and the botanical garden and got our fill of lobster, too. I would have given this a 5 star if the living room couch had not been completely worn out and if the deck furniture had been cleaner. I just spread some sheets out on all the furniture and made it work fine. I was very happy with the rustic cottage feel of the place. We will definitely return in the next year or two!
We have spent the last few summer vacations at Snowman's Cottage. The location is perfect. Our summer begins when we see the view from the front yard! The addition of Inn amenities ,at no cost, is an extra special bonus to the rental of this property.Booth Bay is wonderfully located and you can plan a day trip every day of your vacation and never run out of things to do and new places to see.The cottage is fully stocked and spacious.I highly recommend this for your next Mid Coast visit.
We recently stayed at the Southport Island cottage. The home was lovely, clean and had all the amenities you would want. THe kitchen was well appointed to cook meals as there are very little restaurant choices on the island directly but an abundance of choices in Boothbay Harbor which is right across the bridge. This cottage was situated perfectly for exploring Southport, Boothbay, Pemaquid Point and Ocean Point. It was in a small cove without direct ocean access but the ability to utilize the Newagen Inn property next door for swimming was a huge plus. If we decided to come to Southport again, we would rent this property.
It’s a short drive to Southport Beach, a small, but sandy public beach close by the Hendricks Head Light.
