About Kimberly Beckman

I grew up traveling to Bear Lake and can't imagine not having had those experiences! We spent several weeks each summer there and used it heavily in the winters for snowmobiling. Great family memories and memories we are so thrilled to be able to pass on to our children! Hearing the loons call to each other, fishing, boating, camp fires with s'mores...and just enjoying Northern Michigan has created treasured memories. Our children are mostly college aged now and we still hear them say 'I want to go to the cottage this weekend'--great!

Quaint cabin on a beautiful lake

  • 2 of 5

This was a simple cabin on a beautiful northern Michigan lake. Things to know: The lake is a great all sports lake, we enjoyed lots of swimming, wake boarding and fishing here without ever seeing a single weed, it is the most beautiful blue and crystal clear. Although we would have loved to be out skiing at 8 am, the no wake rule was in effect until 11 am so make sure to plan your day on the lake for that. If you are going to bring a boat to the lake, do not plan on using the dock to tie the boat off, you will need to either anchor or stake it but the water is shallow and it really wasn't a problem for us since the kids did quite a bit of fishing off the dock anyway. The "steps" going down to the lake are treacherous at best so that may be a concern if you have small children or someone who is not sure footed. There is no A/C in the house but were a few fans available to use, there is a small tv in one bedroom but the color doesn't work so the kids watched movies in black and white (which they called "the 80's tv"), lot's of movies to pick from too. The biggest issue for us was the "fire pit" which is extremely small and not big enough to put more than twigs in. We were hoping to cook a few hot dogs or possibly a dinner on it and this isn't the case but it would be perfect for 2 people to sit near and enjoy the lake view. If you don't feel like cooking, Bear's Lair pizza was very good!! There is a magnet on the refrigerator for the phone number.

Loved this cozy cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this clean, peaceful, cozy cabin! I grew up spending every summer on Bear Lake, and it was so nice to be able to share the same experiences with my own children. Thank you!

Wonderful lakehouse!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the lakehouse with small children who had a great time in the water and in the cabin. Kim ( the owner) was a pleasure to deal with and very accommodating. There were a couple of neighboring dogs that roamed around the property at different times (some my kids are scared of dogs) - otherwise it was terrific!

Nice getaway

  • 4 of 5

The lake is beautiful and clear. The cottage is clean and well kept. Nice for a quiet relaxing vacation. Traverse City is an easy day trip. There a lot of outdoor things to do in the area like kayaking, hiking and fishing. The lake was great for swimming and fishing. The only bad thing is the steps to the lake are pretty steep and there is no beach. We had a good time and did some day trips when the weather bad.

Owner's Response: Glad that you enjoyed your stay. Yes, the water level has certainly risen this year...good in many ways but it did take out our nice sandy beach. Hope is goes back down a bit next year. Thank you for staying with us!

Not Exactly as Advertised

  • 2 of 5

While we had a great time at this rental, there were several bumps in the road during our stay.

1.) A previous reviewer mentioned that the sliding door was broke, and the owners stated that it would be fixed. When we stayed, the door was still not fixed. The door was very difficult to open (the kids couldn't open it at all.) The door also would not completely close - a small gap in the lower-right corner of the door frame was a nuisance.

2.) While this rental was advertised as having Wi-Fi, they should have specified that the router that provided the Wi-Fi was located at the home next door to this rental (which the owners also own.) As anyone that is familiar with routers is aware, this does not provide ideal Wi-Fi coverage. Not to mention, if the signal needs to be reset, you must contact the owners.

3.) The description stated that there was adequate room for parking in the driveway, but didn't specify that the driveway is of the long & narrow type. As such, only one person's vehicle will be able to exit the driveway at a time. There was also a parked and run-down looking vehicle that took up some room in the driveway.

4.) This rental would be better described as a "Cabin in the woods", There isn't any room on the exterior of the property to play any kind of activities such as catch, Frisbee, etc.

5.) We had an ant problem during our stay - each morning we would find them crawling on the walls and the ceilings. At least 2-3 each day, if not more.

With all of that in mind, the owners were accommodating when we explained the problems to them, and tried to help us the best that they could. The lake is beautiful - incredibly clear. The swimming was good for the kids, and being able to bring our own boat was a real plus. We did pretty well fishing - the largest catch was a 19 inch bass.

Clean, Cozy cabin on Bear Lake

  • 5 of 5

I was extremely happy to find all new flooring in this cabin. I have a baby that crawls and I was not worried about putting her down on the floor. The layout worked well for multiple people. Bedrooms on one floor, living area downstairs. We could scoot downstairs in the morning and have breakfast and shower without waking everyone else up.

The hill down to the beach was not too steep and the water is gorgeous. It's really the best part of the lake where the water is that caribbean green color. The drop off is really far out there too. Sandy, not stoney.

It would have been helpful to have known that the kitchen had quite a lot of supplies. I brought a griddle, knives, etc. My only suggestion is that the sliding glass door and screen need maintenance.

The owner was helpful and answered our questions before arrival. We met her and her family over the weekend. Overall everything was very nice and we have alrady recommended this cabin to other family members.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. We really appreciate it. I think that these reviews help us with our rankings and help future guests know what to expect. Glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope you had as nice a weekend away as we did. Sorry about the darn screen door! We will have that fixed...going up this weekend, maybe we can get it done then. We would love to have you stay again, hopefully we can meet again next year. Thank you again, Kim and Jim
