Founded in 1534, Ilheus is located between the ocean and the Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia. With its 100 kilometers of white sandy beaches, Ilheus has an average annual temperature of 24ºC. Islanders became famous for its cocoa plantations which made the prosperity of the city and this influenced the architecture and the mood of the historic city center. Islanders also became famous thanks to the writer Ilheus Jorge Amado, who became internationally known through his works.
The historic center has sights as the postcard of the city, the Cathedral of San Sebastian, the famous Bar Vesuvius, Bataclan, Municipal Theatre and the House of Culture Jorge Amado. Among the tours of the area are excursions to the Cocoa Farms, Rio de Engenho, the Enchanted Lagoon and the village of Olivenza.
