About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Beverly & I grew up in central North Carolina, but we've called Hatteras Island our second home. 'Rose Cottage' is just steps away from the sandy beach. One of our favorite things is sitting on the porch watching the dolphin (yes, we see them just about every day) and of course the sunrises and sunsets. On the main level is the great room, full bathroom, washer/dryer, dining area and full service kitchen. (There is a Keurig Coffee maker and a 10 cup Mr. Coffee at Rose Cottage). The sliding glass door near the dining area leads to the back deck with picnic table. The front deck has a porch swing overlooking the ocean and several benches. All three of our bedrooms are upstairs, the master has a king bed with connecting bathroom and a view of the ocean. Another bedroom, very spacious with a queen bed, has two windows with a view of the ocean. The third bedroom has a queen bed. While staying at our cottage, exploring is a must. Hatteras Island is simply the most beautiful place on earth - where the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound is separated by a thin, fragile slice of land. Hatteras Lighthouse, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, small villages of Avon, Buxton, Waves, Frisco and Salvo are all within a short drive.

In Rodanthe, explore the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum, Civil War Battle of Chicmacomico Races, and try to identify each of the over 400 species of birds. Or simple lay back and enjoy reading and watching the surf.

FREE Wireless Internet access via Silicon Travel for this property (computer not provided, bring your laptop).

FULL CONCIERGE SERVICE: Grocery shopping, dinner delivery, in-home catering and chef services, party planning, activities planning, mid-stay cleaning available through our Property Management Company, Shore Details.

PROPERTY DAMAGE PROTECTION: No security deposit is collected. Over years of renting our property, we have found guests prefer to pay a Property Damage Protection fee ($69) which covers all accidental damages to the vacation rental up to $2,500.

About frank henson

Frank and Beverly are the proud owners of 'Rose Cottage' as well as two other properties closeby. We have been vacationing/living on the outer banks for years and will retire in Rodanthe someday. It is the perfect place to be. Both Frank and Beverly are NC licensed builders. Frank retired from the US Marine Corps. We have three Brussels Griffons, Frankie, Annie Rose, and Scout - they always travel with us to the Outer Banks.

frank henson purchased this cottage in 2012

Why frank henson chose Cape Hatteras

The Outer Banks has been our favorite vacation spot for years. This is the third, and most recent, property we have bought in this area (The others are VRBO #426760 and #584841, a short walk down the beach). It's easy driving from our home in Greensboro, NC. It's close to great restaurants, shopping, golf, sightseeing yet very remote and very casual. Also, the Outer Banks is routinely rated in the top five US beaches by US News, National Geographic, ABC News and CBS News.

What makes this cottage unique

Sitting on the front porch in the evening while enjoying a glass of wine or ice tea, feeling the ocean breeze while watching late surfers and swimmers has become our most treasured time. Early in the morning, we'll catch up on news and sports via wifi while sipping coffee and snacking on delicious pastries.

Scenic, Delightful, & Charming

  • 5 of 5

We ABSOLUTELY loved the Rose Cottage. The morning sunrises over the Atlantic from the master bedroom were picturesque and breathtaking. The dancing sea oats out front were almost conversational as you walked the short oceanfront path lined with nautical posts and rope. Enchanted from the moment we pulled up, our kids were often found in their imaginary play world beneath and around the cottage. Currently writing a pirate-themed book, I often found myself looking up from my dalliance with the keyboard, delighted to see dolphin at play outside the den window. The Rodanthe Pier is only a short ten minute stroll from the front door. The interior was very comfortable with the essentials provided. Just across the street is the Liberty Convenience store and gas station. Nags Head is a short thirty minute drive. What a perfect place to stay on Hatteras Island. Booking the cottage was a very efficient process. Mr. & Mrs. Henson were very responsive, gracious, and hospitable. We will be returning again very soon. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the very nice, descriptive review. We can tell you are a writer...and we would love to purchase and display your book on "Pirates" once finished...please keep us in mind. So very right about the sun rises, sea oats and Rodanthe Pier...Rose Cottage is also kid friendly as much imagination on the beach! Thanks also for mentioning Liberty Convenience (right down the street)...we also venture to the Dollar General for quick pick ups. We are very happy you found Rose Cottage to be right for you and your family...plan to return anytime.

Rose Cottage is a gem!

  • 5 of 5

Many thanks to Beverly and Frank for allowing us to stay at Rose Cottage. My adult daughter and I, along with our dogs, spent a peaceful, relaxing week in late January. The kitchen is tidy and well stocked with any kitchen item you may need. We cooked all of our meals during our stay and not once did we reach for something that was not there. Watching the sunrise from the windows on the comfy furniture was a delightful treat on the cold mornings, but when the day warmed up, the beach was steps away. Seashells were plentiful and we were able to watch the dolphins swim along the shore each day, even from the porch. Rose cottage is a gem!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking time to write a very nice review....our favorite time of the year at Rose Cottage....wildlife, seashells are abundant. We have even seen whales that time of year! Rose Cottage is a gem and we were very lucky to find it and turn it into a VRBO rental property....designed and suited especially for small families. Thanks also for pointing out that the kitchen is equipped for perfect meals....lots of folks prefer to do all of their cooking "at home" and it's important to be ready/prepared for guests to do just that....we welcome you back to Rose Cottage and the Outer Banks soon.

Beautiful. Thoughtfully decorated, I took photos of many details before leaving.

Private walkway to the beach which is very close. Lovely porch swing. Well equipped kitchen. Fantastic views of the ocean. We don't want to leave and we will certainly be back, for a longer stay next year.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to write a very positive review on Rose Cottage. We love that you mentioned the porch swing, as that is one of our favorite amenities...we have two other ocean front properties in Rodanthe and each has a porch swing, even though we replace them about every other season due to the elements. The short private walk to the ocean is also a nice plus for Rose Cottage. We try very hard to re-think everything for what a guest might expect/want upon arriving at our property. The kitchen is important, as you mentioned, but also the living area, bedrooms, dining and on and on. We evaluate each of our properties every season and always try to put ourselves in the position of a traveler. Thank you again for you comments and hope to have you back soon.

Everything is coming up roses

This was our second year at Rose Cottage and again we were not let down. The Hensons, owners of this beautiful little gem, continue to be attentive landlords who are aware and generolus with taking care of their renters' needs. This cottage is unique because it is truly a summer cottage, from its wraparound porch to the beautiful shutters and quaint surroundings. My favorite of all? the sweet little pathway to the beach, that has staggered lights that come on at dusk.

This cottage is absolutely perfect for a couple looking for some down time and together time; my husband and I can't even count the hours we spent just sitting on the porch looking at the ocean. Heaven on earth. Linda DiSabatino

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the very nice review and especially for returning to Rose Cottage....your description of a ocean cottage with wrap-a-round porch is exactly why we fell in love with this house five years ago...and it already requires another paint job which we have scheduled for the spring 2017. These guests are also avid Eagle fans and since my Panthers have not been so good during 2016, I have been rooting for their Philadelphia Team! These guests are the best ever, and we welcome them each September to share and enjoy this cottage.

Gem on the beach !

  • 4 of 5

We just had one of the best weeks ever at the beach ! The house was quaint and smaller than we usually rent but we were on the beach or the porch all day! Day one our coffee pot didn't work, I called and they delivered a new one within an hour ! Now that's customer service! The kitchen had everything we needed, it was fully outfitted. We loved the waffle maker and my kids enjoyed fresh waffles each morning. I views from the wrap around porch in the morning and evening were incredible. The path that starts at the driveway level is a little steeper and longer than we thought, no problems for my family but it might be a little difficult for the elderly. We loved the washer and dryer on the main level. Our young kids caught ghost crabs every night on the beach as well as beautiful little green tree frogs, of course we released all ! The water was clean and warm at the beach and the day after the storm we enjoyed watching the surfers, seriously looked like waves I have witnessed in Hawaii ! We look forward to our next visit.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the very nice review and especially the mention of our Property Manager responding quickly to replacing the coffee maker...we don't drink coffee at home, but boy if we miss a day without coffee at the beach we are angry all day!!! So we emphasize to our Property Manager to be very attentive to guest's requests. Thank you for also highlighting the kitchen, washer and dryer, etc...Rose Cottage is a small Ocean Front home but we try very hard to ensure it has all the comforts of a mega house. Thank you also for considering returning again someday.

Wonderful seaside cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Rose Cottage over the Fourth of July and can say we had a great vacation. Steps away from the ocean, the cottage is a gem. It has a vintage charm, well appointed and well maintained. The fact that it is dog friendly is a huge plus, we never want to leave our little poodle at home. Frank was so easy to communicate with and gave very quick responses. He checked in with us via email to be sure that everything was satisfactory with the house and to be sure we didn't need anything.

If you are vacationing in Rose Cottage, be sure to try Waves Market and Deli. They have the most wonderful sandwiches and huge selection of beer. We had a great meal at StingWray's Bar and Grill as soon as we were done unloading the car. And it wasn't too far a drive for my favorite Sam and Omie's in Nags Head.

Frank, we have checked out your other larger VRBO properties for a possible vacation with extended family, no doubt you will hear from us again. Thanks for sharing Rose cottage with us!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind review...thank you for taking time to portray our Rose Cottage as a special place as prospective renters will certainly read your review with anticipation. Beverly and I try very, very hard to make our ocean front cottage special and we want each booking to be special and memorable. Rose Cottage is regarded as a family vacation spot in Rodanthe and we are pleased when folk consider returning. Thank you again, and we hope your return visit is not too far away.
