The place we stayed is very nice, except we found bugs in every room. Otherwise, yes, it is a wonderful place to stay. My family enjoyed our three nights of stay.
When we booked the Kaas lodge we envisioned a quaint little cheese shop in Door County and were excited. When we got there we found that Kaas lodge was Next to Renards Cheese, which is a great cheese shop, but it wasn't what we imagined. It is on the side of the highway in a very ugly part of Door County about 8 miles south of Sturgeon Bay. There is nothing to do around there except drive. When we went in to the lodge we were assaulted by the pungent odor of smoked cheddar. It was so strong my wife nearly booked a hotel room and swore we would not be sleeping there. But after a trip to Target for some Febreeze, some scented candles and air fresheners, we were able to neutralize the smell where my kids and wife could sleep at night. The thermostat controls are very confusing as the heat and the AC are on different controls, meaning both can be on at the same time. And seeing the heat was a room by room while the AC was for the entire house, some rooms would be very cold and others hot without the ability to balance the temperature.
The Lodge was very big though. After we were able to remove most of the smell the house became comfortable.
I can't recommend the lodge unfortunately. It didn't meet our expectations and I thought it was not the best place for our family. Where I realize that the location is not really an issue (I should have looked don a map prior to booking), the smell of cheddar was something that should be addressed. Especially in the stair well by the entrance. We left our air fresheners in the lodge when we left to help the next guest.
This was a great place for our three generation family, my parents, our children and us. We all had plenty of room and the large kitchen and living room gave us just what we wanted in a vacation. We were all under one roof and could go out and explore all of Door County within a half hour drive. Yes, there is a business next door but they were so respectful to our needs that we really did not mind at all. I must say it was a great place for us all to enjoy each other and all the wonders of Door County. We will be back again.
We've been here two days so far and this place is horrible. First morning woken up at 5:30am from the factory downstairs. Loud noises, equipment banging, garage door up and down, phones ringing, people talking. We were going to overlook that the whole front path and stairs were not shoveled and icy upon arrival. There are no towels. The water doesn't get hot enough or stay hot long enough to take a nice shower or fill the "soaking tub". The TV's in both bedrooms do not work. These are just minor issues that we were willing to overlook, that when added up, are frustrating. Yes, we didn't mind these things, we even went out to buy towels yesterday at Wal-mart. We bought bath mats also, so my 70 year parents don't break their necks coming out of the cold shower. So.... it's morning #2 and it's 4:48am. I've been up since 4am from the snowplow guy snowplowing the lot that connects the cheese factory and this place. DIRECTLY UNDER OUR BEDROOM WINDOW. IT'S BEEN 45 MIN OF PURE CEMENT SCRAPING JOY!!!!!!!!!! I know it's winter, I GET IT. But we're on vacation and this is NOT a peaceful, relaxing vacation. So, I'm just warning future renters that this is above and next to a business and NOT A VACATION PROPERTY! So excited to stay here another 5 nights. NOT REALLY! It's pointless to try to go back to sleep now....the factory workers should be here soon! Can't wait.....
We had a great time at Kaas lodge. 7 girlfriends stayed for the weekend. There was plenty of room for all of us and we enjoyed sitting out on the deck. The house itself is located above a cheese factory and Renards cheese shop is right next door. The house is about 10 minutes from the town of Sturgeon Bay but not a bad drive at all since everything is so close. The kitchen could have a few more dishes for meal prep and it would be nice if the owners provided hand towels, but we had a wonderful time!
We rented this home for a family fishing vacation, with our adult children, complete with two families' worth of dogs. When we first arrived, we weren't sure what to expect, but don't let the outside fool you. It's a large home, upstairs over what is I believe a cheese factory, and it is very well-done. Four bedrooms, a large living room and dining room, very nice deck. Lots of room for all of us, and a beautiful yard with some wilderness for the dogs to explore. A nice bonus was Renard's cheese shop just across the yard with lots of goodies to enjoy there or to take home. They even make breakfasts and lunches on your way to your next adventure. It was close to the highway, easy to get to the guys' fishing dock and the girls' shopping as well as some very nice restaurants. Would recommend this lovely and spacious home.
