About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Check-in time is 3:00 pm with check-out at 10:00 am for this rental located at 213 East Hall Street, Savannah, Georgia, 31401.

Brockington Hall Cottage Suite is a cozy and different little suite (539 sq. ft.) in Savannah’s Historic District. Situated on a quiet tree-lined, brick-paved street of beautiful residences, it is within a block and a half from Forsyth Park and of the Mansion on Forsyth Park. It is also within walking distance (for spry people!) of most of Savannah’s famous sites.

Cancellation policy is that upon notice of cancellation THROUGH VRBO (and therefore in writing), owners will immediately seek to re-rent the property. If property is re-rented, any loss to owner will be offset against deposit along with $50.00 fee. Transfer of deposit to other available dates may be allowed.

Located about 25 blocks from the center of the City, and redone and opened in March of 2012, your Cottage Suite includes a large living room/dining room combination, a separate kitchen, a bedroom, and a small but well-appointed bath with walk-in shower - no bathtub. The total area is approximately 506 square feet.

The decorating in your cottage suite is fresh and young, with most of the furnishings being from IKEA. There's a table for 4 with tableware, two flat-screen TVs, two IKEA lounge chairs with footstools, basic kitchen equipment, and quality linens on the new Serta queen-sized bed. Your cottage is private, with its own security system.

The informality of the Cottage Suite’s design and furnishings and its modest rental rate make it especially well-suited to the young at heart who wish to enjoy the grandeur of Savannah itself without staying in a formal space. A full kitchen with facilities for light cooking is provided, and you can bring home your treats from Savannah’s many fine restaurants for later snacks. You can cook your own breakfast or have breakfast nearby in the Cafe at Forsyth Park, which has Starbucks coffee. A Kroger grocery store is a block away down the lane, and Johnny Ganem's wine and liquor store is three blocks away.

The main house is located in a tastefully-renovated 16th Century Classic Italianate villa-style mansion built in 1882 which houses an event venue and private apartments as well. You can see more about the building on our website, Brockington Hall, and on our Facebook page, Brockington Hall Event Venue and Inn.

There are plenty of pillows and many additional comforts. All textiles are new as of 2012, and the mattress and pillows have special coverings for your protection.

A Tassimo coffee-maker is provided, with coffee, tea, sugars, Splenda, and creamer.

In addition to the private entrance, the Cottage Suite has wireless Internet access and cable TV service. You will have use of Brockington Hall’s shared courtyard and of our shared laundry facility (where use of the machines is free), off-street parking for one vehicle, and maid service at a reasonable frequency after a two-night’s stay, if requested.

One off-street parking space is provided. Parking spaces are small. If you have a large vehicle, you may need to park in unmetered, on-street parking, and to be mindful of street sweeping signs.

The Cottage Suite is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is allowed outside the building. There is a small courtyard with a concrete pad and seating where you can smoke.

A two night minimum stay is required, but we'd love for you to be our guests for an extended stay as well.

We will be pleased to show you the event venue if it is not in use. And you can roam at will, on foot or otherwise, in Savannah's Historic and Victorian Landmark Districts.

We do ask that you let us know your anticipated time of arrival so that we can plan our days (and nights).

Cancellation policy is that upon notice of cancellation THROUGH VRBO (and therefore in writing), the owners will immediately seek to re-rent the property. If property is re-rented, any loss to owner will be offset against deposit along with $50.00 fee. VRBO’s booking fee is not refundable. Transfer of deposit to other available dates may be allowed.

About Lee Mundell

My wife and I are empty-nester lawyers who inherited this fine property from my father in 2007. After renovating the parlor floor for use as an event venue, we opened one inn suite in the building, and effective March 2012, will put this cottage suite into service.

Lee Mundell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Lee Mundell chose Savannah

We have lived in Savannah's adjacent Victorian District for 34 years, raising our family there and working in the Historic District. I have been the President of Historic Savannah Foundation and of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, and we are striving to make Brockington Hall properly maintain the historic character and feel so unique to Savannah, while opening the 4,000 square foot parlor floor for tasteful and festive events, as you can see on our our FaceBook page, Brockington Hall Event Venue and Inn. The balance of the building contains my office, five apartments, and one inn-suite, with this 'cottage' suite in the adjacent carriage house. Please come see us!

This suite is not part of the main building and was a modest apartment outfitted in the 1960's.

What makes this cottage unique

The unique benefits of this suite, at this price, are its privacy, its furnishings and decor, and its location. The suite is ideal for those who are seeking a more relaxed feel, rather than a 'period' feel, and for those who want to walk or travel inexpensively in Savannah's beautiful Historic and Victorian National Landmark Districts. Situated at the south end of the Historic District, we are approximately a mile from River Street, the north border of the roughly one square mile district. We are a block from a bus tour stop at Forsyth Park where you can board a free shuttle or paid tour, a block from a grocery store, and four blocks from a liquor store (if that matters).

Charming detached unit

  • 5 of 5

All the ambience of Savannah with a comfortable , elegant, modern inside. Well equipped kitchen and nicely renovated bathroom. Close to the free purple trolley stop and Kroger. Lee , the host, provided us with everything we needed and was very easy to work with . While the unit has wifi, we were unable to get it to work satisfactorily. All in all, a great place to stay at, especially suited for an extended stay. Highly recommend it and wish we had more vacation days to stay longer ....

Great Value in a Perfect Location

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is steps away from Forsyth Park and Bull Street. Lee is a gracious host. With the updates that Lee says are coming soon, this will be a good choice for two adults. Read some of the other reviews, but considering the value and close access to everything we needed, we would stay at this property again. If you want brand new, stay somewhere else for hundreds of dollars more.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Cute cottage, convenient location on a beautiful street. We biked everywhere, but public transportation is available. Lee was very informative about how to get around the area and the cottage. Laundry facilities and a place to store our bikes were highly appreciated! Lee's wife also gave us a last-minute tour of their beautiful historic home. Only warning is that the air conditioning is a little noisy when it is on (in case you are a light sleeper) but we were grateful for having air conditioning after being outside all day! Would definitely stay again, thank you!

In Response to "Our Stay in Savannah" by Linda M.

  • 5 of 5

WOW! That's a lot of complaints for an extraordinarily affordable $140/ night average-- on a weekend, no less! "Needs paint"? "Tired" and "needs TLC"? Too far, at a mile walk from the river? Staaaahhhhp, please!

If you've mapped the property before booking, you'd know it was not on or near the water. How is this a negative? A: It's not. The beauty of Savannah is strolling its tree-lined streets and exploring all its Squares and architecture-- and this is true a mile from the water, just as it is along the waterfront (in fact, there are more modern structures and chain restaurants and stores the closer you get to the water). One short block from the largest of all the squares-- Forsyth Park-- Brockington Hall's location allowed you to be in a location that's: A) authentic to the area, B) quiet enough to not have street noise on weekend nights, C) 1/2 block walk to a major grocery store. Both of the cottages around the side and to the rear of the property are very spacious for 2 people. Ours had a 4 seat table, two lounge chairs, and a desk-- all in the entry/ living room! None of the bugs Savannah is sometimes known for made their way inside.

Best of all, Lee, the caretaker, is fantastic! One night, we found ourselves in a time crunch, having missed the free DOT shuttle and he personally managed our drive to a friend's wedding dinner at the Olde Pink House! He was exceptionally helpful, friendly, and informative!

There are plenty of places to stay in Savannah. For tremendous value for your dollar, Brockington Hall is an excellent choice! Bring your comfy walking shoes, don't overload your schedule, and enjoy Savannah!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words, David! Our mid-century building has its limitations but, for its prime location, it is quite reasonably priced. We doubt that the amenities we offer are available at a comparable price in the Historic District. We really appreciate your choosing to put outlier reviews in perspective.

Comfortable, but...

  • 4 of 5

The location of this cottage just cannot be beat. A block away from Forsythe, and within walking distance to all of the amazing restaurants, shops, and history downtown Savannah has to offer. Our host was absolutely wonderful, taking the time to thoroughly check us in, and offering tips to help us get acquainted with the area.

However, there were a few things that made the stay in the cottage sub-par...

When we first arrived to the cottage, there were several dead bugs on the floor under the kitchen table, including but not limited to, a large palmetto bug. I completely understand these things are everywhere in the south, and it's hard to avoid them, but perhaps a sweep of the suite prior to our arrival would have prevented this type of off-putting encounter.

Secondly, there is definitely something wrong with the water in the cottage. Out of each faucet, the water that comes out of those pipes smells like rancid sewer water. We knew the people staying in the other suite, and their water was completely fine. So, this leads me to strongly believe that there is an issue with the pipes in the cottage suite. It was so bad that I felt the need to ration my breath when showering in order to not nauseate myself, and I couldn't bring myself to brush my teeth with anything but bottled water. I really think the pipes need to be checked.

Everything else was great, however. The bed was very comfortable, the AC in the unit was effective allowing us to sleep comfortably, and the cottage was well appointed with the small appliances that we needed, and silverware - all of that.

In order to ensure that future guests can enjoy this cottage a bit more than we did, I would suggest having the pipes checked, and just doing a quick "once-over" before guests arrive to ensure that no little "critters" have found their way in between guests.

Thank you for the stay, and for the otherwise comfortable accommodations!

Owner's Response: Hi, Nicole - So sorry that a few bugs got in after our last sweep of the suite; that does happen in the South. And sorry that the water was a problem. We have addressed the water with the City many times. The vast majority of our guests since we opened in 2012 have been completely satisfied. We offer a very low rate for the Historic District and we do not raise that rate for high season because we like to provide an affordable suite. However, the mid-century bath which most have accepted has brought criticism. We therefore have scheduled a very expensive remodeling of the bath to be done this month, which will cause us to have to reconsider our price. Touch-up painting has also been done.

Fantastic location

  • 4 of 5

Loved the location and the apartment. Only drawback was the REALLY LOUD A/C. If it's on, you can not carry on a conversation, watch TV, or sleep. It's a block to Forsyth Park, about 3 blocks to Hop On-Hop Off Bus, which stops at the statue at the center of the south end of the park. Lee said the HO-HO stopped closer, but it truly does not. The unit is very well equipped if you wish to cook, but we ate out in wonderful local restaurants. Enjoyed a nice dinner at Cuoco Pazzo Cucina Italiana, about a block away. Great lunch sandwiches at a natural food store and deli right across the street from the HO-HO bus stop at the end of the park. Be sure to visit the Savannah History Center.

Your ground-floor suite is one block from Savannah's famous Forsyth Park, with a grocery store one block away and a liquor and wine store three blocks away. At Forsyth Park you can catch our City's Shuttle, and a moderate walk (with or without shuttle) will take you to the bulk of Savannah's sightseeing spots and shopping in the Historic District. Also it is on the edge of Savannah's Victorian District, the first 'suburb' of the City, originally served by trolley, where you'll find our 'painted lady' houses and small businesses.
