Discover The Magic Of Raleigh

The town of Raleigh derived its present name in the early 1900's, when John Elliott (son of Thomas and Martha Elliott) went to New York to work as a minister. At this time, the community was known as Ha Ha Bay. The name Raleigh is believed to have been adopted from Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. During his time in the United States, John Elliott had heard the name Raleigh and had taken a liking to it.

The fishing stages, wharves, trap skiffs and artifacts serve as reminders that Raleigh was once a very busy port on the Northern Peninsula, and its people have evolved from a rich ancestry and unique culture.

Located near the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula and surrounded on three sides by cold waters from the Strait of Belle Isle, the peninsula of Burnt Cape has some of the most arctic conditions on the island of Newfoundland. But it is exactly this cold climate, together with a unique landscape and calcium-rich soil, that allows northern plant species to grow here in a rich and rare variety. Visitors to Burnt Cape should be prepared for a chilly time, even in summer.
