Very charming farmhouse plus log cabin/guest house on five acres. Grassy meadow surrounds the buildings. Orchard with old trees, sweet walking neighborhood, five minute walk from fly fishing in the river. Drive to Glacier Park and be home in 15 minutes after a day of exploring. Famous pies baked on request. Vintage bike collection allows you to go for a ride on the tree-lined road. Most guests like to nap on the deck on the chaise lounge or read a book in the hammock in the orchard. Five minute drive to small lakes for swimming. Columbia Falls is one mile away and has the best antique-ing in the flathead valley. Seven miles to the west is Whitefish, if you're looking for an upscale dining experience and lovely city beach. The sun stays up until very late in the summers...the days stretch on and on in the nicest way!
Keywords: Lots of breathing room, 5 acres about a mile out of town, old growth trees, walking neighborhood, near the river, 15 miles from Glacier Park. 'Professional decorator's home....charming touches. Vintage bike collection, movie collection, wi-fi, cable, phone! Bonus sun room on the main house sleeps 2 more if you like!
Native Montana Gal, worked in California for 32 years on movies and as professional interior designer. Owned a coffee shop in Seattle in the 80's. Love traveling and hosting people....love hospitality. And seeing to all the details that make a stay really enjoyable. The house is decorated in a friendly and comfortable and fresh way. You'll see!
Jean Flynn purchased this farmhouse in 2007
I love the property. There is something magical about the place....everyone says so! When I leave the city and come here I feel my shoulders drop and I begin to relax. There is a lot of fresh air here and usually, the first few days, people are sleepy in a good way! I've spent 5 years restoring the house to its original state...polished wood floors, wavy old glass in windows. Nice convection oven for baking and heated tile floor in renovated bathroom.
I love the quiet and way the air smells from the fir trees and the birch. I love to walk on the tree lined road. It is a walking neighborhood and you'll find lots of friendly people on your walks. When the weather is right we have small bon fires in the orchard, run up the road to Lion Lake for a quick swim on a hot day. Or Echo Lake or Whitefish Lake or Dickie Lake. There's a lot of water around these parts! 7 miles to Whitefish or 20 minutes to Bigfork for upscale dining. Really great thrift stores and antiques stores in our town, Columbia Falls, a mile away.
Having the log cabin allows guests to spread out and take a private moment on the trip! We also mow a crop circle in the meadow of chest-high grass...you can recline there, and stare up at the Big Sky. It's a great place to practice doing nothing!
Our group of 9 (4 adults and 5 kids) felt so at home at the Love Shack. We loved the vintage furnishings and overall style of the home. It's beautifully updated while maintaining a vintage charm. The location was perfect. We spent time in Kalispell, Whitefish and Glacier and it was a quick drive to anywhere we wanted to go. Jean is such a wonderful host and made us a delicious apple pie made from apples from her garden. We never wanted to leave this stylish Montana oasis and would definitely recommend this house!
Jean has created a magical place with many thoughtful, understated touches. Not only is the location ideal for Glacier NP adventures, river rafting, hiking, swimming, dining... but each day on Jean's property brings new discoveries. It's the little things: a small fan for each bedroom, a croquet set for low-key family fun, freshly picked plums from the grove on site, the hammock... even properly working wifi. This very special property creeps into your soul, providing guests with a truly special, deeply Montanan experience. Jean is a marvelous host who, although she lives on site (in a separate dwelling), allows renters their own space both indoors and outside. We couldn't have been happier with our Northwest home, far away from our own Northeast home.
Jean's property was perfect for our family who ranged in age from 15 years to 73 years with varying activity levels. The property was lovely, pictures on the web site can't fully capture the location, home and grounds. We had 3 full days of hiking, fishing, biking and quiet times on the deck. We watched a couple of deer fight over the apples on the trees adjacent to the house, actually standing on their back legs!! Jean's hospitality was unmatched, we went home with fresh produce from her lovely garden where you have to check out the hammock.
This was the most wonderful setting for our family gathering. From the moment we arrived we felt right at home at the Love Shack. There is nothing of a "shack" in this beautiful place; a tastefully decorated farmhouse linked to a comfortable log cabin by a spacious deck. All around we were surrounded by Jean's creative touches both in the house and garden. The orchard with both vegetables and flowers was so beautiful. Jean picked fresh flowers for us on our arrival and had baked the most delicious pecan pie. The location is perfect for exploring the valley from Whitefish to Glacier National Park. Close by is the Flathead River for tubing, kayaking and swimming. It was almost hard to leave the property for outings as it was such a lovely place to be! We are already making plans for next summer.
This place is like a mix between going to a well kept country house and summer camp! The photos are very accurate. The kitchen is appointed with high end dishwasher & range, plus fridge and plenty of work space. Everything is decorated for warmth and welcoming comfort. We had 11 people staying and we were all happy with the accommodations. We did enjoy a bonfire and s'mores on the last night. We have family in the area, so we rented this with the idea of celebrating a 90th birthday--which went off without a hitch! Jean is an amazing hostess! I recommend this for any family who wants a place for casual togetherness, sitting out on the decks for conversation, fishing at the nearby river (our boys & men went twice). We also took a trip out to the national park which is huge and absolutely gorgeous. Also, there are quaint and fun shops to explore. Ask Jean to tell you about Born in a Barn!! Only one caveat about this place--for people with disabilities or knee problems, there are some stairs. We stayed four nights. This home is definitely on our must visit again list!!
We spent 4 days having a wonderful family vacation here. Jean was a spectacular hostess. She had a delicious pie waiting for us when we arrived, and gave lots of excellent suggestions for things to do and see.
The house was just as it looked online, and had a wonderful homey feel to it. My youngest daughter had a great time picking raspberries and cherries in the garden, and my oldest loved the sunroom with all of the sunshine through the windows and shelves full of books and games.
The location was a nice balance for us, so we were able to easily visit Whitefish, and also go into Glacier National Park. The only downside was that we weren't able to stay longer. It was so nice to have spaces for everyone to gather in the evening as a family, and to be able to enjoy the garden and the yard as well. After a very long road trip, with many nights spent in hotel rooms, it was a treat to stay in such a welcoming and relaxing home.
