About Mark Hopkins

Owned and operated by Mark & kathleen Hopkins. We purchased this property in 2004 and with years of sweat and hard work, made this property what it is today. We take pride in our property and it shows when you enter the driveway. We decided to open our home to visitors a few years back, so come and stay with us. Kathy and I are constantly trying to make our place more comfortable with every passing year.

Your hosts;

Mark & Kathleen Hopkins

Mark Hopkins purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Mark Hopkins chose Maryland

This is our 6th year renting out our property. After enjoying our cottage with our family for the past 10 + years, we decided to open our place up for others to enjoy...We like to rent our property to responsible, honest, individuals who will respect our home. If your looking to have a wonderful, relaxing, quiet getaway, then our cottage is the place for you and your family.

We love the easy quiet of the Chesapeake. Our cottage allows our family to truly enjoy each others company. We love to water ski, wake board, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, go crabbing or just enjoy hanging out in the water. Ski beach is a very popular area to throw out anchor and mingle and party with other boaters... At the cottage, we enjoy barbecuing and gathering around the campfire ring in the evenings or relaxing in the hot tub .Taking a morning walk or bike ride in the community is another one of the relaxing past times we enjoy. A quiet stroll with my morning coffee overlooking our beach and river cove area is one of my personal favorite morning times. Just absolutely beautiful watching the wildlife and the river come alive...I can't say enough. An absolute must... Come enjoy!

What makes this cottage unique

Located just 50 yards from the river, beach, and dock.. with spectacular views...Boating, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, and hanging out in the water at our private beach is just a few things you can do while at our cottage. At our beach area, swimming out to the floating swim platform is always a hit. For the kids, there is bike riding galore. We have 6 bikes available. Children also love to fish from the pier. Crabbing comes alive in late June thru November.Fishing from the Pier is also a favorite for the kids, going over to Elk neck state park and walking the trails, finding the lighthouse and seeing the incredible views of the Chesapeake Bay. Fireworks every 4th of July from our private beach. ( in the past few years, almost every weekend someone is firing off fireworks over the river and you can see them from our private beach and sometimes right out front of our home too!). Taking a 5 minute drive to Chesapeake City and walking the town. Great breakfast, lunch and diner restaurants all within a short walk along the C&D canal. As stated before, you can exhaust yourself here or just decompress to the's all here for you. Come enjoy!

Very relaxing!

My husband and I were looking for a quiet, clean place with access to the outdoors and all of the comforts of home and this place was perfect! We really enjoyed the short walk to the beach, lounging in the hot tub, and sitting on the covered patio during a thunder storm. Mark was great at communicating quickly and returning our deposit promptly. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking for the comfort of a home away from home.

Nice home with very accommodating owners

  • 5 of 5

We stayed over the Christmas holiday to be near our children. The house is nicely decorated and very comfortable. The owners checked on us several times while there to see if we needed anything, which was a first. We had a fire in the fire pit several times, and there really is plenty of firewood. Our son hosted Christmas dinner but we cooked a lot of things to take. The kitchen is the best appointed we have seen in our 20 years of renting on VRBO. Last, but certainly not least, there were condiments and spices, coffee and creamer and sugar, toilet paper and paper towels, and even shampoo and conditioner. Since we arrived in the late afternoon after a long drive, it was nice knowing that we didn't have to run to the store that evening. We replaced everything we used but it certainly was a convenience. We would definitely stay at this house again and would highly recommend it to others. Thanks Mark and Kathy.

Impeccable home with all amenities. We had a fantastic stay. Thoroughly enjoyed the hike to Turkey Hill lighthouse & a meal at Woody's crab shack. The kids loved the jacuzzi & roasting marshmallows by the fire. Extremely relaxing stress free weekend getaway!!

Owner's Response: Our Cottage is located in a quiet , slow pace community and still within a short drive to many different small towns and attractions. Yes, roasting marshmallows is a particular favorite with the kids especially during the cooler seasons. We always have plenty of firewood for our guests

A real gem! The cottage was exactly as described and the owners were a pleasure to work with. It was the perfect spot for our weekend girls getaway.

The outside property is very beautiful and thoughtfully laid out. A covered porch for rocking, a hammock, picnic bench, fire pit and hot tub all with beautiful surrounding shrubbery for privacy. Though you are not beach front, you have a view of the water from the back of house, and are a short walk from the community beach. We threw a blanket down at sunset and enjoyed the views there!

The inside of the house is clean and welcoming. It's clear that Mark and Kathy go the extra mile to make their guests feel at home. Towel sets laid out on each bed with a seasonal decoration, a binder with everything you could need in the area, a fire pit already built and ready to use, boxes of toiletries you may have forgotten on each dresser. The little things that make a difference!

The kitchen a nice size for cooking and gathering. The living room big enough for a game night or just relaxing.

The beds and linens were comfortable for the six women in our party. The downstairs bedroom is a queen attached to a full bath. Three of the four beds are up a fairly large flight of stairs in a nicely decorated loft area with lots of windows and a bathroom/ shower. The owners have taken measures to make this safe with lighted steps, sturdy railings and an available baby gate at the top. The steps should definitely be considered if you have elderly, handicapped, or children in your party.

The house is near Chesapeake city, which was a lovely, quaint, town with shopping and eating. There is also a winery just down the road which we will visit next time perhaps.

This was the perfect spot for girlfriends from all over to get together for some R&R! We will definitely be returning and thank Mark and Kathy for making our stay comfortable, relaxing, and accommodating! It was a pleasure working with you and I will be telling people about your cottage !!

Beware their "security deposit" is a sham to get more money. Although the house was cute it is not as perfect as the owners think it is. Apparently there was a check in list somewhere--not on kitchen table as owner claims--we did not see that detailed that we needed to hire a cleaning crew to make the house spotless. We arrived to stained couch and didn't think much of it since it is a beachy type house--should have taken photos--the owner tried to blame this on us! We scooted a coffee table over the creepy basement door so my daughter felt more comfortable and we did not keep walking over it--and they said we had rearranged their furniture. They also said we left an odor in their home--clearly the odor was there when we got there and someone had opened most of the Windows to air it out--and with the week of rain prior and continued rain the entire time we were there everything in the area smelled musty. Also said we soiled carpet--it was a very light almost white carpet and despite taking shoes off and trying to keep kids off, with the wet windy fall weather and leaves blowing outside it was impossible to keep spotless. And the email trying to degrade us to justify keeping our security deposit was uneccessary and hurtful. Bottom line--this couple has unreal view of the immaculance of their property and unrealistic view of normal usage--make your bed, vacuum the floor don't leave a single glass or trash in trashcan! Even after large cleaning fee don't expect your deposit back! God bless, you clearly need it more.

Owner's Response: We take great pride in our home and how we present it to all our guests. Does this review make any sense at all? Especially after reading all of our other reviews? This is the first and only time in four plus years we ever had to use a portion of our guests security. We needed our rugs, sofa , pillows and loveseat all professionally shampooed. The place was left an "Utter Mess". "Beware" is the right term for this renter. As owners, we all do our darndest to keep our places wonderfully decorated and inviting . That's our business. We can only hope our guests know how to respect the property of others. Sincerely , Mark and Kathy Hopkins

Super clean and very comfortable family home. Everything that you could possibly need for a happy vacation is there! House is bright, full of light with a nice layout with the first floor having a full size bedroom and bath. Very pleasant and attentive owners who check in to make sure all is well. Location is two houses from water, community very friendly, great for walking the dog. Great find on the Eastern Shore!
