Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 5 nights

About the property

2 Bedroom , 1 Bath Newly Remodeled From Top To Bottom

Convenience! New! Affordable ! Now and Zen provides all this and much more!

This 1960's Hawaiiana duplex has had a recent complete remodel from top to bottom in the fall of 2015.

It's sister rental next door, Bamboo Hideaway which is also on this web site, boasts the same high quality. Our rental accommodates children ages 10 and over. Just across the driveway is another duplex which also will be accommodating guests after complete renovation. This provides an ideal setting for family reunions where they can enjoy each others company but relax in their own private accommodation

Walk over the Wailuka bridge down the street and be in downtown shops and bay front in 5 minutes from your front door.

The location is incredible for being downtown. It's peaceful and quiet. A tropical commercial fruit orchard is across the street on one side. 20 acres of grazing farmland is on the other side and the owners, Diane and Phil have a home on another adjoining lot. This makes contact convenient but far enough away for privacy if desired.

Tropical fruit trees abound on this almost 1 acre parcel of land. In season you might find avocado, orange, mangosteen, mandarins, guava, lilikoi, jacoticaba, lychee or bananas ready to pick. Just ask which is ready. And ask

Diane if any of her homemade fruit wine is available.

The kitchen in Now and Zen boasts all new stainless steel appliances along with Quartz countertop. Everything is there you might need for meal preparation is there and if not , ask the owners and they might supply it.

Luxury linens are in the bath and for the beds. The master bedroom has a deluxe foam gel mattress with all cotton sheets. The 2nd bedroom has a firm foam mattress with an extra memory foam topper. There are 2 kimono

"Happy Coats" hanging in the closet to lounge in.

The large bathroom has a dual sink vanity and a glass enclosed tiled shower.

Relax in the Great Room watching from Direct TV channels on the 42 inch flat screen. Free Wi Fi is available as well.

Ceiling fans are in the rooms and extra floor fans if needed are available for when the trade winds slow down. Our goal is to keep our guests happy and comfortable. We enjoy supplying knowledge about the area. Phil has left a copy of his book on Hawaiian history on the table for you to look at. A signed copy could also be purchased from him if you desire.

There are no stairs at all in our rentals and we have refitted in the remodel to accommodate standard size wheelchairs.

In the open ended carport there is a picnic table for outdoor dining options. This looks out on the fruit orchard.

When the clouds part there are also dramatic views of Mauna Kea.

Recently a gas BBQ has been added. It is in a covered area in the back of the lot beneath the avocado tree.

There is so much to do and see in Hilo and nearby areas that a few days can only make a small dent in it.

Enjoy walking to many Hilo attractions including art galleries, numerous restaurants and taverns, and Hilo's famous Farmers Market within 1/2 a mile. The Lyman Museum, Tsunami Museum and Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the University of Hawaii Hilo campus are all within 2 miles. A stroll along Kamehameha Avenue on Hilo's Bayfront will give you a real feel for the Hawaii of old with a relaxed pace and a feeling of Aloha that will want you to schedule another trip to Hilo.

You won't be disappointed in Hilo or Now and Zen. There are big hearts in the friendly folks here with LOTS of Aloha.

Convenient and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Ww spent a week in Hilo and enjoyed the property very much. Now and Zen suited us perfectly with well equipped kitchen, living room, 2 bedrooms and a very nice bathroom. The unit was attractively decorated. The location was very good for walking into downtown Hilo in just a few minutes or getting out on the highway to head for Volcano National Park, out to Pahoa or up the coast. The hosts were helpful and relaxed. By the way, thanks so much for the apple bananas from your garden--one of our favourite Hawaiian treats. Thanks for a great stay in a town with an old Hawaii feel we really enjoyed. We hope to come back

Lovely Hilo home base

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Now and Zen and would recommend it to our friends.

Pros: Clean, modern, well supplied kitchen, comfy beds, double bathroom sinks, ample space, beach chairs, carport for easy/dry unloading, warm host

Cons: Cost was a little over our original budget, shower stall a bit small.

Frogs are vocal yet charming. I closed the windows and was fine with just a fan. If sensitive, bring earplugs.

Thank you for your hospitality and for being supportive but not intrusive. We especially loved the huge avocados upon arrival. Yum!

We loved Hilo and wished we had planned a few more days in this quaint area.

We greatly enjoyed our visit to Hilo and our stay in Diane's duplex. She was very available and accommodating of our needs and she does great massages! The unit is totally remodeled and is very comfortable and well equipped. We would definitely stay there again! Thanks Diane!

Great base of operation!

  • 4 of 5

Excellent location and graciously appointed.

We ourselves host guests and think this place is truly wonderful. I just wish we knew that it actually was not a quiet situation/location.

We had hoped for a little more rest which proved challenging between the very close by local road noise and early morning lawn service right outside our quarters 2 of our 5 days, even our earplugs which handled the all night long "cute" frog noise perfectly were unable to block the other more low frequency noises.

Great house and surrounds, but a few minor drawbacks.

  • 5 of 5

The house (half a duplex) is great , very modern, up-to-date, and tastefully decorated. The surrounding gardens are wonderful for those that like to harvest their own tropical fruit (avocados, papayas, etc). The owners are I think ecologically aware and it shows. We noticed a few insects in the house (cock-roach like), and some lizards, but for me that just means there is no poison about.

The owners are friendly without being intrusive.

The first night I had some issues with the very loud frogs that start honking about dusk and continue a bit past midnight. But then I got used to them and accepted them as a natural feature. If it bothers you, shut the windows and/or get earplugs for use at night.

You need to be aware that the unit is just 1 of 2 (soon to be 4?). We had no issues with this in terms of noise or privacy but if you want isolation this isn't it.

The subject of air-conditioning (there is none, except for fans) is a personal one. I think if you come to Hawaii because it is a "tropical paradise" (hot and humid) then you have to adapt to it.

I washed a few things by hand in a basin and dried them outside over night (in the carport and so under a roof). But some may miss a laundry.

Maybe with 4 units a communal laundry would work.

Great place to stay in Hilo

  • 5 of 5

Over the last year and a half we have stayed at two other vacation rentals in Hilo and this is the best one. The place has been remodeled and updated to include everything you need for your stay and being close to downtown Hilo, provides the opportunity to enjoy a short walk in the morning or evening. Diane has beautifully furnished the place and you 'll find everything you need to enjoy your stay. There are plenty of fans to keep you comfortable, cool and to provide white noise to muffle the coqui frogs. We highly recommend this place for your stay in Hilo.
