What makes this apartment unique

Probably the most striking feature of the 5th district of Paris is the Pantheon in the middle of the neighbourhood. This splendid, massive building, built of white marble, was originally created by Louis XV to honour St. Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, after recovering from a long illness. During the following centuries, people began to use the Hall as a vault for "great men" of France. Victor Hugo was the first to be buried there, but today the monument is "home" to people as diverse as Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emile Zola, Jean Moulin, Louis Braille, Marie Curie and Alexander Dumas. Even if you're not willing to pay the entrance fee to inspect the graves of these great men (and women), the exterior view of the splendid Pantheon from the end of rue Soufflot is a must for everyone.

Another famous place in the neighborhood is the bookstore Shakespeare and Co in front of Notre Dame. Popular with expats as English-language bookstore, it also has a fascinating story for lovers of literature. It was here that the owner Sylvia Beach agreed to publish the first copy of "Ulysses" by James Joyce, and later it was the temporary home of many Beat Poets, including Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. The bookshop continues to offer accommodation to writers and backpackers in exchange for some work in the store. If Shakespeare and Co. is not enough literary history for you, you can also follow the steps of Ernest Hemingway, who spent much time in Paris, in particular the fifth district. His first apartment was located at 74 rue du Cardinal Lemoine (third floor), he stayed in the Hotel du Mont-Blanc at 28 rue de la Huchette, he rented the top floor of 39 rue Descartes as a private place where he could write, and he also frequently ate at Café Pre Clerics at 30 rue Bonaparte.

Central location

If what you want is to be in the middle of it all, this is your apartment. One drawback, at least in July when the windows are open, is that you are in the middle of it all. The street musicians in the square below are great at about 6 PM. The electric guitar soloist demonstrating his Eddie Van Halen riffs at 2 AM is not so great. The apartment itself is comfortable unit with basic furnishings. I wish some basic supplies would have been provided - paper towels, hand soap, garbage bags. Overall, it was a good place to stay.

Location is PREFECT!

  • 5 of 5

I originally booked this apartment because the selected criteria has air conditioning. And when ask if this unit indeed have air conditioning. I was told no and that it's never get hot in Paris. I disagree with that statement and ask that they provide a fan. We travel to Paris the past two years during early July and there were at least a couple of days the temperature got up to 35C (95F) hot. And since there is no air conditioning it was a bit discomfort for our two little young children even with a fan. The unit is on the 5th floor. There is a small lift that you can take up to the 4th floor but you have to walk up about 2 flight of stairs. If we open the windows the noise level is loud with crowd noise, cars horns, police siren (it seem we would hear siren every 15-30min in the evening until early morning hours) and the smell of cars exhaust is not pleasant. But the location is GREAT!!! The metro is just literally around the corner of the front door and all major attraction (The Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, plenty of great restaurants and cafes) are within walking distance. If only they have a portable air conditioning then this place is my all time favorite when in Paris. The place is modern and clean and the view of the top half of the Eiffel Tower and the top half of Notre Dame and St Michel Cathedrals are a bonus. I would highly recommend this apartment especially during Spring and Winter months but Summer you might want to ask for fan or portable air conditioning.

Disappointed with the listing but not the property.

  • 2 of 5

Ahhh this is a love-hate review...

The good... The property is really nice and in an EXCELLENT location. It has all the right amenities, excellent for a family with small kids. The check in process was on point with clear directions with how to get to and into the apartment. Comfy beds and plenty of room to relax. The apartment was clean and when the windows were closed it was quiet...

Now the bad... The listing states the there was A/C, now the only "A/C" in the apartment was a floor fan. I feel it is important to mention it was 98 degrees outside and it was 94 in the apartment during the afternoon with west facing windows. The evenings got cool enough but the apartment had no screens on the windows and my son who is allergic to mosquitos awoke with 38 bites all over his body. (hence the reason for booking and paying a higher price to stay in a place with A/C) Not happy about this...

The other issues is the baggage hold. Again, the listing satiated they had a hold and when we inquired about it we were told to use the use a city baggage hold company at 25 euros for 6 hours of use. Really?

Again, if they updated their listing and charged accordingly none of this would be an issue, however we were misled and we offer a buyer beware on this apartment.

Enjoy Paris!

Wonderful group, Prestige!

  • 5 of 5

Nicolas and Suomi were fantastic and made sure we had a near stress free experience. It was a first time to Paris, and it's a little scary to be in a place that has a different language. I was able to email, text, and call to make sure we were at the right address and instruction s after the driver took us to the flat. Tres facile st mercí, Prestige! Great experience

Fairly spacious, centrally located with pretty good views

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed the apartment and it's location near the Seine and Notre Dame, but the faulty shower drain was a serious drawback as was the difficulty of getting into the building. We did not know we had to call for the access code. That said, the place was beautiful and fairly quiet. We were able to get around easily because of the location to transit. The city is amazing and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

It was perfect for a business trip.

  • 4 of 5

My stay in the apartment was a quaint little apartment and my experience was great. I loved the location, Saint Michel is a wonderful area in Paris. Check in and check out we're very easy and smooth. The only downside was no washer and dryer in the apartment.

Map

The Fifth arrondissement of Paris (le cinquième arrondissement) is situated on the left bank of River Seine and often bears the name “Quartier Latin” (Latin Quarter). The Latin Quarter is a district centred around the Sorbonne which is home to many universities, colleges, and prestigious high schools. It has a reputation for being a young lively atmosphere. Its name comes from the Middle Ages when Latin was the language of learning at the Sorbonne. The 5th arrondissement of Paris covers an area of 2.541 km2 with a population of 60,800 (2011). The district is overlooked by the dome of the Panthéon which sits at the top of an elevated mount called Montagne Sainte-Geneviève (alt. 61 m above sea level). The 5th arrt includes some famous Parisian monuments such as the Panthéon, the Sorbonne university, the Jussieu university campus, the Arab World Institute, the Jardin des Plantes, the Ménagerie (France’s oldest public zoo), the National Museum of Natural History (including the Grand Gallery of Evolution) and the picturesque Rue Mouffetard.
