Eclectic, charming and authentic, the mystical Maguey House sits smack dab in the heart of historic Clarksville, one of the loveliest and most sought-after neighborhoods in Central Austin. This newly refurbished Home Away property was part of the original Charles Clark hilltop homestead, and has been in the adventurous Browder-Long family since the 1980s. Today, while the ideally-situated Maguey House retains its cool vintage vibe, it has been transformed into an inviting temperature-controlled environment that comfortably sleeps up to 6 guests, who will feel right at home as soon as they enter the welcome porch and open the front door.
The classic Clarksville cottage is on a safe, quiet street, but just steps away from some of the city’s best restaurants, an organic grocery, a bike shop, a well-stocked corner store, fabulous breakfast joints and locally owned artisan shops.
It is also just a short walk, bus/bike ride or Uber away from to Downtown, the Music District, the Colorado River, The University of Texas, the flagship Whole Foods Market and other top attractions. (The rental comes with free off-street parking for 1-2 vehicles, a rarity in Clarksville.)
The Maguey House is freshly painted and floored throughout, with a unique layout and highly unusual details. It has been updated with central air conditioning and modern amenities, and is finished with art from the Browder-Long’s own global collection.
The bedroom has a new queen bed with good linens, and the adjacent bathroom is stocked with plenty of fresh towels for the bath/shower/swimming.
The largest space is a captivating light-filled enjoyment room at the back of the house. This memorable Austin-centric social area has a wood-burning stove and has the additional advantage of a private, decoratively-screened sleeping corner with a full bed.
The Maguey House has a spacious kitchen with beautiful handcrafted cabinets, handy appliances, a coffee station and an inviting dining area and table/chairs.
For families and active guests, including pets, close by are two beautiful parks with playgrounds, pools, as well as the famous hike and bike trail on Ladybird Lake. For history buffs, the Sweet Home Baptist Church is just two blocks away and has been the heart of the neighborhood since the 1870's.
The Maguey House is down from the original Nau’s Pharmacy, where you can still enjoy a cheap tasty breakfast, burger or malt at the counter, and near the amazing Josephine House, Jeffrey’s and Clark’s Oyster Bar, recently highlighted in national magazines as some of the liveliest and most imaginative eateries in Texas.
From the Maguey House, you can do it all… or do nothing but kick back on the porch and watch the world go by.
After growing up in South Louisiana, I came to another cultural rich area, Austin. I studied at the University of Texas, which was my parents' and grandparents' alma mater. I fell in love with Austin and the spirit of the people here. Years later my husband and I bought our home which is now The Maguey House.
We lived outside of the US for almost 20 years - in Bolivia, Ghana, Ethiopia and India, where we raised our three childre. Our Clarksville home has always provided us a beloved base in Austin.
Elizabeth T. Long purchased this bungalow in 1986
Deep in the heart of Austin, warm, cozy and ready for you and your family or friends.!
The home was as described. We had everything that we needed. There were plenty of things within walking distance. The homeowner even went above and beyond by mailing me something that I had left in the bathroom. I would stay here again.
For those considering...the common area is separated by a partition where the second bed is. This means no TV late at night if you have someone sleeping in that bed.
Overall I would recommend staying here! However, those with animal allergies may have issues. The home was clean, but I could still find animal hair in various places and our son developed a rash and some swelling from something on the furniture. It was nothing serious, but I thought I should point this out.
Great place to stay when visiting Austin. Well maintained and very clean. The location was convenient to everything. Off-street parking is a bonus. Having the convenience of a market and dining within walking distance was fantastic. While the place is small, it didn't have that feel once we were there. We had plenty of room and the added bonus of a fenced yard made it perfect for our dog to romp around and do his own exploring of Austin. Would definitely recommend and we will definitely be coming back. Thanks, Elizabeth!
The Clarksville Cottage was just what we needed for a weekend in Austin with our two small children. Beth was incredible sweet and responded quickly to all of our questions prior to our trip. The house had all that we needed and was just down the street from the Galaxy Cafe which was perfect for Saturday morning breakfast and coffee with friends. Whole foods is not too far away and we made a few trips there even in just the short time we were in Austin. We had stayed in this neighborhood before and booked this house because we loved the area so much. It is so quiet and feels incredibly safe. We left the kids with a babysitter to attend a wedding and the kids got to play for a few hours in the adorable back yard before bed. We also really liked that a door separates the front bedroom from the huge back living area making bedtime for the kids easy so we could put them down and still enjoy watching a movie in the back room. This wouldn't have been an option in a hotel room. Overall, a great weekend getaway!!
My husband, son and two cats stayed at this charming property for nearly a month. It had everything we needed! It is quite spacious for a bungalow, and the owners have upgraded it nicely while retaining the charm of an older home. There is a generous backyard, and the neighborhood is excellent. We encountered some issues that are to be expected with an older home, but Bess and her management team were on it immediately! We were impressed with the responsiveness.
Everything you need is within a 5-minute walk - including the grocery store, several cafes, Nau's Pharmacy, an excellent coffee shop, and more. We took advantage of this. If you have kids, there are a few parks and playgrounds within a few minutes walking distance, and the neighborhood is extremely family friendly. Overall, we loved it and would recommend a short-term or longer-term stay.
The Clarksville Cottage Bungalow was a perfect place for our needs. We had our family in town and needed a few extra beds. The house was just 7 blocks from our house and so it was very convenient for everyone. We had our 73 year old mother and a friend stay there and they felt very comfortable and very safe. We use Homeaway a lot for ourselves, but this was the first time we rented for someone else and it Elizabeth made if very easy and convenient for us all.
My wife and I loved staying here. It was perfect for the two of us and was a great central location for getting to downtown Austin. Uber rides were less than $10.
We were in town for Formula One and the fact this small home had a full washer and dryer saved our lives (it rained the entire race weekend).
We plan on staying here again next year.
