About the property

Beautiful Mountains, Relaxing Country Setting, Easy Access, Wonderful Memories

Retreat to the serenity the Appalachian Mountains just a 3½ hours’ drive from Raleigh NC. The Buffalo Bungalow is a beautiful home in a country setting but with easy access to the charming downtown West Jefferson Arts District with all the amenities; yet it is nestled in the mountains in a tranquil setting with abundant wildlife. Sleep in the forest’s symphony. Watch the fireflies signal their joy and see once again that there is a Milky Way. Escape pollution noise, crowds, tension and stress in the soft caress of the Blue Ridge.

This two bedroom, one bathroom house is surrounded on 3 sides with mountains. The house sleeps 5 (Queen, Full, and twin sleeper sofa) with linens included and features a large custom kitchen with a full complement of cookware, silverware, and small appliances, a cast iron gas stove in the living room, and hardwood floor throughout, along with a full sized washer and dryer. Be connected if you wish, there is wireless internet, phone and TV, but you can unwind, unplug, and get a much needed break in the clean mountain air. Entertainment is provided by 36” TV with Cable TV and Netflix. A DVD library with a few kids DVDs are provided. A selection of board and card games along with a few books is available. There is a large deck with a beautiful mountain view, a charcoal grill, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows or just chasing away the evening chill.

Enjoy this NC mountain private getaway in a relaxing country setting. You will see cows grazing in the nearby pasture, and depending on the time of year may enjoy watching the hummingbirds or get a glimpse of the wild turkeys or deer off the back deck. Enjoy just sitting on the deck, hiking in the Nature Preserve adjoining the back of the property.

Located just 6 miles from the town of West Jefferson where many festivals are held and many artisans keep shop. The town is a mecca of art galleries and other interesting shops, offers a few restaurants, bars, an ice cream parlor, and a coffee shop. Mary’s Episcopal Church containing 3 of Ben Long’s frescoes is nearby. This is the only place in NC where cheese is made, and you can watch at the Ashe County Cheese factory downtown. The Ashe County Arts Council showcases local artists with rotating exhibits and special events. West Jefferson hosts a Christmas in July festival and has 15 murals that create a walking tour throughout downtown. There are free summer concerts on the backstreet, a weekly Saturday and Wednesday farmers’ market, monthly gallery crawls, one of the biggest arts & crafts festivals in the high country, an antique festival, little theater performances, and annual holiday events.

Mount Jefferson State Park is just 9 miles away from the house and has fabulous views and a hiking trail. The Virginia Creeper Bike Path is just 45 minutes away while it is just 20 minutes to the New River for rafting. If you choose to visit area attractions, historic Todd, Glendale Springs, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, Tweetsie Railroad, Blowing Rock, Boone NC, Mount Rogers and Grayson Highlands State Park, Pond Mountain, and Elk Knob State Park are all within 30 to 60 minutes’ drive.

Sorry, no pets and no smoking.

Please note there is house next door that is sometimes occupied. The deck and the living room of the cabin is set so there is no view of the house although the house is visible from the kitchen and master bedroom window.

About Danna and Mike Ross

Mike and I have been using on line bookings services for years and have enjoyed many family vacations in the comfort of a home rather than a hotel. We live near Raleigh and visit the area often.

Danna and Mike Ross purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Danna and Mike Ross chose West Jefferson

We fell in love with the Carolina mountains. We enjoy hiking, enjoying the fall colors, tubing, music festivals, and just relaxing. We are blessed to have our own cabin we can share with others so they can take in the beauty and serenity of the Appalachian Mountains.

The cabin was very nice and quiet. It had everything my family needed.

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time this weekend staying at the Buffalo Bungalow. It had everything my family needed. We used the cabin as a base camp to take the kids to Tweetsie Railroad one day, and hiking in Grayson Highlands the next. We came back to the cabin and had fires in the outdoor fire pit each evening. The first morning we woke up to a pair of deer in the woods right outside the back door. The view from the back porch was amazing as well. Overall we had a great time and would definitely recommend this cabin.

Beautiful cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful cabin in immaculate condition. We weren't here very much because we were in the area for a family funeral, but I would have loved to have stayed longer and spent a lot more hours in this wonderful property. Surrounding area was beautiful, too. Loved seeing the mountains and the cows in the nearby pasture from the front door. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Nice cabin in a beautiful quiet rural setting with mountain views & access to a creek & hiking trail

  • 5 of 5

This is a nice super clean cabin that seemed fairly new and had everything we needed for a wonderful anniversary trip. The owners have a second cabin that is located beside this cabin. While was close to us, it was easy for us to forget it was there. With the exception of a couple of windows, you can't really see the other cabin from inside the house or while sitting on the porch.

The owners came down for part of the time we were there, and they were extremely nice folks. We were happy to meet them and enjoyed a nice conversation when we ran into them while walking on the trail behind the property. My wife and I could tell that they made every effort to ensure our privacy while staying there. We would never have even known they were next door if we had not run into them on the trail. The only other time we saw them during our stay was when Danna came over to help us get connected to the internet. Even then, she offered to come over whenever we left the cabin to keep from disturbing us, but I assured her that we didn't mind. The last renters decided to make some changes to the network, which prevented us from connecting. When we called Danna for help, she apologized (even though it wasn't her fault) and took care of it right away, and we were online in no time. The internet connection was fast and very stable, so if that's important to you, I'm sure you will be pleased with it. The TV was great too. They had a good selection of channels, a library of DVD's, and a Netflix connection.

The kitchen was well stocked and had plenty of room. The bathroom was really nice, and the shower was great. The master bedroom had a comfortable queen and a big closet. The second bedroom had two twin beds. The dining room / living room was a good size and provided plenty of room. The living room had a chair and two loveseats - one of which had a twin sleeper, so the cabin would certainly sleep 5 people. There was also a gas stove / heater that was nice to use and enjoyable to look at while relaxing.

The cabin had a great little porch that provided us with a beautiful view of the pasture and the nearby mountains. There was also a fire pit available for use.

We were able to walk a short distance to find a creek situated on a walking trail that lead to a small but beautiful waterfall. This alone made renting the cabin worthwhile to us.

We thoroughly enjoyed the cabin, the beautiful property, the great location, and the chance to rent from some wonderful people.

Beautiful view and cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

Me and my 2 children stayed at this location after Christmas and had such a wonderful time. This cabin was very clean, the location was great. This cabin was very cozy and just felt like we were at home. Everything was provided that you could possibly need to go on a vacation. The day we had to leave, we woke up to snow and it was so pretty. What you read on-line about the cabin is correct, I would definitely stay at this location again. We spend one day at Beech Mountain, snow tubing and the next day at Grandfather Mountain and made a visit to Linville Falls which was absolutely stunning. I truly wish we had more time to discover the beauty that surrounded us.
