Bat Cave is small community in the mountains of North Carolina. You can enjoy beautiful winters and warm summers. The community is named for a rare breed of bats the inhabit a nearby cave. Guided tours to the mouth of the cave can be scheduled in the Spring and Summer. This is a beautiful place to get away from the 'busy-ness' of everyday life and enjoy a slower pace where people are friendly and life is calm.

About Sherri Smith

Jon and I were married in 1988. We spent our honeymoon in nearby Chimney Rock. We reside in Kernersville, NC where we were both born and raised. We are parents to 3 wonderful children; Owen, Hannah and Molly. Jon has been employed with Tyco Electronics since 1994. He is a drummer and has played with several bands over the years. He now enjoys playing in our praise and worship band at church. I have spent most of our married life as an at-home mom. I have been blessed to provide child care for some precious children who have touched my life deeply. I have taught pre-school, worked as a substitute teacher in our local schools and worked full time with special needs children where God taught me things I would never have learned otherwise. I am participated in my first international mission trip in the summer of 2012. I accompanied a small group from my local church to Malawi, Africa where we worked with orphans, widows, and special needs children.I returned in the spring of 2014. These trips have been amazing and I hope to be able to return many more times. Jon and I have been greatly blessed and look forward to the opportunity to share our blessings with you.

Sherri Smith purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Sherri Smith chose Asheville Area

We had always vacationed at Ocean Isle Beach. Because Jon loves the mountains so much I decided to try something different the summer of 2011. I began to search online for places in the mountains that still provided swimming and sunbathing opportunities. While browsing on VRBO one day I came across a house in Bat Cave. I booked it for a long weekend and we were hooked! We booked a second visit and it was during that visit that we discovered the little house for sale. We fell in love with it and purchased it several months later. We love the fact that there is so much to do in the area. Our daughter loves to visit the nearby wolf sanctuary/rescue. There is swimming, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, repelling, ziplining, shopping, and so much more.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the quiet, peaceful surroundings. The colors of fall are spectacular! Spring is beautiful and full of color. The wildlife is abundant. We leave all our cares at home!

Cute cabin overlooking a river

  • 4 of 5

This cabin hosted the perfect couples weekend getaway! Easy to find, close to Asheville and equipped with a jacuzzi overlooking a river. Sherri was very accommodating and responded quickly when I asked her a question. I highly recommend booking this cabin in Bat Cave!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

Such an adorable place with a great location. So peaceful by the river with a good book and Town Village is just down the road. This house is the best of both worlds. We very much enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Relaxing Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We arrive at the cabin at 3:30 ish pm and instantly felt a warm welcome. It was nice and cozy. We only ate out for breakfast & lunch on Saturday while we were out sight seeing. But we cooked dinner both nights Friday & Saturday, the kitchen was stocked with dishes, pots & pans and all kinds of seasonings. We enjoyed that there was thing to do without driving to far because we only had 2 night stay. Chimney Rock & Lake Lure close by. We enjoyed the Hickory Nut Brewery. The walk up to Chimney Rock. The Flowering Bridge. Then came back ate dinner and had a relaxing night in the hot tub and the beds were very comfortable. We will visit again soon !!!!

Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Sherri's house is the perfect place for a winter get-away. Can not speak for the summer as we were here in mid-january. However the bedrooms are very comfortable, the bathrooms were all clean and functional and she has a hot tub, on a deck, overlooking a river surrounded by trees. How can it be better than that. She is very accommodating, as we got there late and it was not a problem getting into the house. We had a minor problem with the hot tub and she answered my text within minutes and cleared the problem right up. The area surrounding Bat Cave is simply phenomenal and there is so much to do all year round that we will definitely be back. I recently lost a person very close to me and I needed to get away with my best friend and just take it easy. Sherri's "Bat Cave" and the Smokey Mountains were the perfect prescription.

Country river side home with huge deck and hot tub

  • 4 of 5

Overall good, would return

Pros:

Easy to find on navigation, well maintained roads & parking

Riverfront lot, gorgeous

Hot tub, deck, fire pit, grill & out door seating both covered and covered a plenty

Good supply of linens & pillows; washer/dryer available

Access to movies, flash lights, fire starter (but no firewood, so would plan to bring your own)

Close proximity to Lake Lure & Chimney Rock

Reasonably priced

Owner Mrs Smith excellent communication prior to booking and responsive to question about hot tub even though late in the evening

Cons:

**Disclaimer-these aspects are relatively minor and pros by far outweigh cons

Property located on busy road, traffic loud when trying to sleep in the morning

Stained carpet

Dated kitchen and bathrooms

Listed as Sleeps 6 but only has 2 Queens, this is misleading. There was however two roll up cushion type mats we used on the living room floor which were fine for kids although this would not be suitable for most adults. Listing should be changed to reflect this.

Refrigerator left with opened condiments and other foods would prefer empty, not comfortable serving to family yet children tried using various things.

Bathroom w/used toothbrush remaining in medicine cabinet

Not as clean as most homes we have rented (dusty, pet hair although no pets allowed) although in owners defense there was a power outage the morning before we arrived so owner could not vacuum and had to clean with limited light

20 min to grocery

Restaurant we were hoping to eat at with seasonal hours, closed the night we planned to go there

Stairs to access river, not handicapped or stroller accessible (n/a for our family)

Owner's Response: We appreciate the positive comments. In response to the negative comments: -I looked back at my description and it does say 'sleeps 4, maximum capacity 6'. I will look closer to make sure it is worded correctly throughout the add. -We are not advertised as handicapped accessible in any way -This is our personal vacation/second home, not your typical vacation rental home. Therefore when it is empty we are there ourselves. This is the reason for the condiments and other items in the kitchen (coffee, filters, creamer,etc.). I leave them there and have a sign that states 'Feel free to use what you need' -I travel 2 1/2 hours, each way, after each guest leaves to clean the house myself so that I know it's done the way I want it. I had driven up the day before this guest arrived and stayed overnight to prepare the house. I awoke to no power due to strong wind gusts overnight, the morning they were to arrive. They had asked to check in early so I had no choice but to leave the house unfinished. I was unable to vacuum the carpets or do intense cleaning. Luckily I had done the laundry the night before as well as most of the general cleaning. I left a detailed note explaining this. I pride myself on leaving a very clean home for guests and regret that it was not possible this time. -I am not aware that we have a medicine cabinet. I do believe there is a toothbrush in the cabinet next to the Comet that I use for cleaning small areas that I can't get to with a rag or sponge, perhaps this is what she is referring to. -We are aware of the carpet. It is professionally cleaned twice a year by Stanley Steamer. New flooring has been purchased and will be installed as soon as possible, We are very excited about this! -As for the other things listed, we have no control over businesses closing (this is a very small community and they are dependent on summer tourism to stay open). Yes, the grocery is a 20 minute drive but its a gorgeous drive I have to add! In Bat Cave the road runs along the river (as mentioned in previous comments) so morning traffic is heard, we think its worth it to be on the river. The only dog that is supposed to be in the house is mine which is a small, non allergenic Maltese. The house is advertised as 'not pet friendly' rather than 'pet free' for this reason. We do not allow guests to bring pets, however some folks do take it upon themselves to try to get away with it anyway. Dated? I feel 'simple' is a better description.
