Bat Cave is small community in the mountains of North Carolina. You can enjoy beautiful winters and warm summers. The community is named for a rare breed of bats the inhabit a nearby cave. Guided tours to the mouth of the cave can be scheduled in the Spring and Summer. This is a beautiful place to get away from the 'busy-ness' of everyday life and enjoy a slower pace where people are friendly and life is calm.

About Sherri Smith

Jon and I were married in 1988. We spent our honeymoon in nearby Chimney Rock. We reside in Kernersville, NC where we were both born and raised. We are parents to 3 wonderful children; Owen, Hannah and Molly. Jon has been employed with Tyco Electronics since 1994. He is a drummer and has played with several bands over the years. He now enjoys playing in our praise and worship band at church. I have spent most of our married life as an at-home mom. I have been blessed to provide child care for some precious children who have touched my life deeply. I have taught pre-school, worked as a substitute teacher in our local schools and worked full time with special needs children where God taught me things I would never have learned otherwise. I am participated in my first international mission trip in the summer of 2012. I accompanied a small group from my local church to Malawi, Africa where we worked with orphans, widows, and special needs children.I returned in the spring of 2014. These trips have been amazing and I hope to be able to return many more times. Jon and I have been greatly blessed and look forward to the opportunity to share our blessings with you.

Sherri Smith purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Sherri Smith chose Asheville Area

We had always vacationed at Ocean Isle Beach. Because Jon loves the mountains so much I decided to try something different the summer of 2011. I began to search online for places in the mountains that still provided swimming and sunbathing opportunities. While browsing on VRBO one day I came across a house in Bat Cave. I booked it for a long weekend and we were hooked! We booked a second visit and it was during that visit that we discovered the little house for sale. We fell in love with it and purchased it several months later. We love the fact that there is so much to do in the area. Our daughter loves to visit the nearby wolf sanctuary/rescue. There is swimming, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, repelling, ziplining, shopping, and so much more.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the quiet, peaceful surroundings. The colors of fall are spectacular! Spring is beautiful and full of color. The wildlife is abundant. We leave all our cares at home!

Great place for a relaxing retreat!

  • 4 of 5

My girlfriends and I booked this cottage for our annual girls trip. There were six of us and we had plenty of room. There are only two bedrooms with two beds but there was a large air mattress that worked for the remaining two of us. The scenery is beautiful! The location is amazing--quick drive (roughly 20-25 minutes) into Asheville or to the Biltmore. Chimney Rock State Park and the strip of shops and eateries next to it was less than 10 minutes away.

Our one and only issue was the hot tub. That was one of the main reason we chose this cottage and it never worked for us. We were told a few days prior (via email) that there are frequent power outages in the area (indeed, the power went out briefly our second night there) and sometimes it flips the breaker for the hot tub. The breaker was flipped upon arrival and we worked for two days to try and determine the issue, to no avail. While we understand the owners live two hours away, it would have been nice to have been able to have someone come out to help resolve the issue so we could have utilized the hot tub. I will say the owners were great about communicating over the phone and via email and text to try to help us get the hot tub up and running.

We did not let this let this dampen our stay as the cottage is located in such a beautiful area and that made it easier to relax. I would highly recommend the cottage if you are looking for peace and relaxation!

Owner's Response: The 'power outages' the guest refers to are power surges or 'blinks'. The lights will blink for just a second due to wind and such, not really outages. But often it will cause the hot tub to cut off and all that is needed is to flip the switch on the tub off and back on and it resets it. I assumed when they contacted me that that was all it was. This was a first for us with the hot tub not working. I was there several days prior to check in to prepare the house for the guests and the hot was working fine, as I had coffee in it while I was there (my favorite thing to do there). I was surprised to find out it wasn't working. I returned after they checked out and had an electrician come out and check it. He was able to rule out an electrical issue. My husband and I were able make an appointment for a hot tub repairman to come and we returned a few days later to meet with him. A new pump has been ordered and we are waiting for it to be delivered so that he can install it. We hope this takes care of the issue..

Cute cabin overlooking a river

  • 4 of 5

This cabin hosted the perfect couples weekend getaway! Easy to find, close to Asheville and equipped with a jacuzzi overlooking a river. Sherri was very accommodating and responded quickly when I asked her a question. I highly recommend booking this cabin in Bat Cave!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

Such an adorable place with a great location. So peaceful by the river with a good book and Town Village is just down the road. This house is the best of both worlds. We very much enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Relaxing Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We arrive at the cabin at 3:30 ish pm and instantly felt a warm welcome. It was nice and cozy. We only ate out for breakfast & lunch on Saturday while we were out sight seeing. But we cooked dinner both nights Friday & Saturday, the kitchen was stocked with dishes, pots & pans and all kinds of seasonings. We enjoyed that there was thing to do without driving to far because we only had 2 night stay. Chimney Rock & Lake Lure close by. We enjoyed the Hickory Nut Brewery. The walk up to Chimney Rock. The Flowering Bridge. Then came back ate dinner and had a relaxing night in the hot tub and the beds were very comfortable. We will visit again soon !!!!

Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Sherri's house is the perfect place for a winter get-away. Can not speak for the summer as we were here in mid-january. However the bedrooms are very comfortable, the bathrooms were all clean and functional and she has a hot tub, on a deck, overlooking a river surrounded by trees. How can it be better than that. She is very accommodating, as we got there late and it was not a problem getting into the house. We had a minor problem with the hot tub and she answered my text within minutes and cleared the problem right up. The area surrounding Bat Cave is simply phenomenal and there is so much to do all year round that we will definitely be back. I recently lost a person very close to me and I needed to get away with my best friend and just take it easy. Sherri's "Bat Cave" and the Smokey Mountains were the perfect prescription.
