The condo is appointed comfortably and tastefully with travertine floor throughout, granite counters in both the kitchen and bathrooms, and local artists work adorn the walls. Keawakapu Beach is very much OLD HAWAII. Rent a kayak or go swimming across the street, or walk to the south along the beach for 3 miles passing a mile of private multi-million dollar homes, then stroll on a path at the ocean cliffs and beaches passing some of the nicest hotels on the island. Walk north to find Kamaole 1 Beach and fronting our building is a nature preserve and the Kihei Boat Launch where boats leave for snorkle tours and more. There are many shops and restaurants in Wailea and Kihei which are literally a few minutes in each direction. This area is also warmer and less rainy than other locations on Maui, and less windy than North Kihei.
There is one flight of stairs to the front door although the lanai is on the ground floor at the lawn.
This is a NO SMOKING building. Sorry we do not have an elevator or a pool.

Rick is in the computer industry, and Susie retired from Health Care Research when our 3rd child was born 21 years ago. Rick enjoys windsurfing, and both of us love walking the beaches, snorkeling, and the nature of Maui. With Rick still working, we can't spend all of our time on Maui, so we will be renting out our place approximately 6-8 months a year. After a total demolition and renovation, we want to share with you an apartment which is clean, mold free, green, and stocked to the fullest for a very comfortable stay!
Susan Fraenkel-Cattell purchased this condo in 2011
We have been traveling to the Hawaiian Islands for 27 years visiting Rick's parents living on Oahu. During this time we always visited the Keawakapu area of Maui, and it became our favorite place in the world. Finally, May 2011, we closed escrow, purchasing our Maui dream home, Honu Place! August 2011 we demolished the entire apartment to its bones. Susie has managed and coordinated the entire project creating a space that we think you will love as much as we do.
This is a very unusual condo building for this area. It was built in the 70's to house the contractors building a very large resort up the hill. Only 16 units, twelve 2 bedroom, 2 one bedroom, and 2 studio apartments make up this complex. Because of its small intimate size and woodsy surroundings, it feels very private and secluded. It has a large lawn, woods, and a bamboo grove. The views are lovely with palms, mango, and a sweet ocean view above the trees creates old Hawaiiana. It is quiet, off the beaten path yet just minutes to many stores and restaurants, and the best part, just a 4 minute walk to the nicest beaches on Maui. Rick and I enjoy a walk daily either south, for a 6 mile round trip walk on the beaches, or to the north along the nature preserve and Kamaole Beach Park 1. Often we grab a cup of coffee at the lovely 5 Palms or Sorentos on the beach, or walk to the Four Seasons for one of their fresh fruit smoothies. Other days, we take our snorkels with us for a morning snorkel at Keawakapu or walk to Ulua for variety. Snorkeling is wonderful at these or many other beaches. When the waves are good, a little boogie boarding (supplied in unit) is great fun too. Besides some people who kite and windsurf in Kihei, it is only a 20 minute drive to Kanaha Bay, world renown windsurfing and kiting spot with nearby rentals. In the evening we enjoy the many bars and restaurants with good live music just a couple of minutes away.
After spending 6 months of demolishing, renovating, and decorating our beloved apartment, all I can say is"I am in love".I am as happy as I had imagined, even happier walking 4 minutes to Keawakapu Beach. Some days I don't want to leave my comfortable home with it's open air Living Room, and relaxing sunset view. It is so easy and convenient to prepare meals here, and Eskimo Candy (local fish market) is so close. We are central to everything, yet feels so remote,I can't wait to stay forever!
Located on the border of Wailea and Kihei, this very well appointed condo is quite a find. Hard to beat the price for one of lowest density condo complex in this area. Lovely garden view looks out to the open horizon, instead of a view partially marred by another building or parking lot. Since the owners periodically live here, there are many amenities provided throughout the condo, from filtered water to flashlights to thermal shopping bags, so convenience abounds.
Loved to gaze at the ocean view each morning by sitting in the high chairs and table on the lanai. Glorious sunsets nightly, silhouetted by towering palms nightly. Folks that live or rent here are very respectful about keeping voices and noises down to keep the lanai a relaxing experience.
I love cooking and it was a joy to have a kitchen overflowing with top quality pots, pans, stove and oven instead of the cheap tinny stuff one usually finds in rental condos. Pantry and fridge were nicely stocked with spices and other communal goods/condiments left by previous guests and well maintained by the cleaning staff.
We weren't bothered by mosquitoes here, but it is a bug's life in Hawaii, so creepy crawlies may visit if you don't clean/sweep up. Diligence is required to keep food in the fridge or tightly sealed or stored in the many plastic containers/canisters provided.
No need for an air conditioner, even when the temps hit 86, as the screen doors on opposite ends allow for the tropical breeze to keep things pleasant, supplemented by very effective ceiling fans.
We truly appreciated the 1.5 bathrooms, which was pretty essential for the sanity of a family of 4. The beautiful dual head, large shower stall is a wonderful treat. Absolutely LOVED the numerous clothing/towel hooks on the walls, so essential for beach life.
Huge comfy master bedroom bed with memory foam top you dissolve in to. Fan/light control switch right next to nightstand was a nice convenience. With the screened window open for the breeze, you will hear the road noise, but the repetitive two seconds of vehicular "swoosh" easily melts into the soundscape.
We enjoyed leaving the car behind by strapping on the beach chairs and umbrella for brief commute by foot to the gorgeous white sand beach, a short 5 minute zig zag across the street. Loved to walk on/along the beach boardwalk to the 5 star hotels to enjoy a drink or linger in the lobbies, but not pay 4 digit prices to actually stay there. Aloha!
My husband and I really enjoyed our time at Honu place. The place is spacious, very clean and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The beach is a short walk away, and the garden is a terrific place to relax while enjoying sunsets. All the little "Honu" decorations and details everywhere make the place extra special. Highly recommended!
Without a doubt the best rental condo we ever stayed at in Hawaii hands down. It all started with great communication from Susan from the beginning. She was very prompt in her replies and very informative over email. We also rented Annie's place next door. Highly recommend renting both condos if traveling with 2 families - walking back and forth from the back door was very convenient.
Anyway, when we got there, we were very pleasantly surprised at how nice this place was. It literally had everything you will EVER need (she even has a nice rice cooker! - which was great because my parents likes to eat rice with meals). The appliances were very very nice. This Unit was very clean and very QUIET. We travel with 2 very little kids, and so quietness in the condo at night was VERY appreciated. We are from Seattle and so we are used to a little bit cooler temperature, so we decided to ask for the A/C to be put in. Even on low (i think it was around 74 or something) it made the condo very comfortable when we needed it during the day.
We have bee to Kauai, Oahu, Big Island, and Maui and A LOT of beaches on these 4 islands. And in our opinion Keawakapu beach is one of the best beaches. This condo is within 4-5 min walk to the beach (through Mana Kai lobby). We have stayed at the Mana Kai before, but for the price staying at this condo is hands down way better. If you think about it, staying at the Mana Kai will probably save you like 2 minutes walking time if you are going to the beach (getting out the door, walking to elevator, waiting for the elevator, and walking through lobby to the beach will probably take at least 2 to 3 minutes). The amenities at this condo is way better, it is way more quiet, and it is heck of a lot cheaper than Mana Kai for 2 minutes closer to the beach...? Yeah my search is over for a Maui condo I that can return to time after time. The only negative for this condo is that it will get more popular and will be more difficult to book in the future... but they deserve all of these great reviews. We had an amazing time while we were there, and this condo played a major role. We will return. Mahalo Susan!! :)
Honu Place was a dream come true ... so comfortable, beautifully appointed, and convenient for all our outdoor adventures & dining choices up & down Kihei road. We had a car, but it was fun getting plenty of exercise while enjoying the beautiful scenery nearby. It's amazing how well the owners (Susie & Rick) seem to know what we needed, making it easy to rest, relax, and have everything at our fingertips, i.e. top grade appliances, tote bags, coolers, beach equipment, towels, & toys, sunscreen, hair dryers, drying rack, flashlight, etc. etc.! For entertainment, the 3-D TV was a bonus, even though we didn't watch much TV - who could, when the gorgeous outdoors called to us each & every day?! The laundry (2 sets of W/D) is shared with other units, but it was just down the stairway & always available - very easy. Now that we're home, our fond memories bring us joy, laughter, and many, many awesome photos of a very special 2 weeks in paradise. Thank you, Susie & Rick!
This was the first trip to Hawaii for my husband and I and we had such a wonderful stay at Honu Place. Everything was modern, updated, and clean and the location was absolutely perfect. We were able to walk along the shoreline at night all the way to fancy Wailea for drinks. If we didn't want to walk as far, there were lovely bars, restaurants, shops, and beaches just a few min away. I loved that the condo complex was quiet, but still not far from civilization. I will miss waking up to the sound of roosters crowing, off in the distance.
There were a ton of amenities provided such as snorkel gear, boogie boards, a cooler, folding chairs, beach towels, etc, which was a wonderful convenience. The kitchen was fully stocked and we enjoyed being able to whip up a few meals when we were too tired to go out. It felt like we got to enjoy the luxury and convenience of a fancy hotel, but without the price tag. I can't say enough good things about this condo. I highly recommend and can't wait to go back!
