Why Cathy Wonderling chose Great Lakes Pennsylvania

There's something special about growing up on Lake Erie. Life revolves around the water and the lake. In summer, we live at the beach. As a teen, I was a lifeguard at Freeport. The fishing and our sunsets are world class. In fall, the water temperatures moderate the climate, producing perfect conditions for grape growing and our local wine industry. In winter, we snowmobile, ski, ice-fish, ice-skate and dream about summer days again. I bought this property because of its beauty and its size -- it's rare to find a one acre lakefront property with easy beach access. Need any recommendations? Ask me. I grew up here and have can tell you about the locals' best kept secrets.

What makes this house unique

This home is directly on Lake Erie and has it's own large private beach. The one acre-sized yard is huge by lake home standards. I can walk to the North East Marina along the beach or walk to the Mazza Winery. This lake house has many distinguishing features that set it apart from other rentals. The gazebo, beach bar, fireplace, one acre lot and large private beach are just the beginning. The lake is borders the front and the vineyards are behind the house. Its the best of everything here in steelhead alley and wine country.

Lake Erie sunsets are beautiful and relaxing to watch from anywhere on the property. Eagles frequent the beach as well as other wildlife. I also enjoy stargazing and seeing the Canadian lights across the lake at night. From here, you are a short 26 miles from Canada. Care to swim the distance? I can tell you about our first local swimmer who has-- Ms. Halli Reid. She is a local legend and just so happens to have a park dedicated in her honor at Freeport Beach. Check it out when you are here.

The names says it all - this house is definitely the Lure of the Lake

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in several different houses during our stay in North East and this was by far our favorite! It had everything you could hope for in a vacation house: beautiful big back yard, breathtaking views, an easy walk down to a perfect beach and a comfortable home that had plenty of room for everyone to stretch out. Everything was clean, neat and accessible for our family. The property manager, Cathy was so easy to work with and very helpful and accommodating to our needs. I was able to walk out to a gazebo in the morning and have my coffee while enjoying a magnificent view of Lake Erie - beautiful! The beach was easy to access and great for recreational activities. We will be planning our trip up north early as we want to be sure to book this house for our stay. I would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing vacation with all of the comforts of home and more.

Lure of the Lake

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Lure of the Lake with his two sisters and their husbands from May 29 – June 3, 2016. As we are all from different areas of the U.S., we were looking for a quiet place that we could relax and catch up. This house was perfect!

As promised in the description of the property, there were tons of towels that were soft and fluffy. They looked brand new and there were more than we could have ever used in a week. The beds were comfortable and the linens fresh. The house was charming, clean, and very well furnished. It really did not feel like a vacation rental. It was great to sit in the living room and watch the wild life through the big picture window.

The kitchen was very well stocked with plates, glasses, utensils, etc. We did not notice anything we needed that was not there. While grilling dinner on the bbq one night, we ran out of propane. This would have been a problem at home, but not here. There was a second, full propane tank sitting on the patio. It took just a few minutes to swap the tanks and we were cooking again. Cathy stopped shortly after that to see if we need anything. We told her about the tank. She took it with her and a full tank was returned the next day.

The backyard was amazing. The weather was great and we had a bonfire in the fire pit. We also spent several days in the gazebo watching the sunset. A perfect end to a perfect day!

Access to the lake was easy. You are on a big hill so it is kind of steep but the path is easy to navigate. The water was too cold to swim in but the walk along the shoreline was nice.

There was a guest journal on the living room coffee table. We enjoying reading what other guests had shared about their vacation.

If I had to make any suggestions, the only thing I could come up with was the doors on 2 of the 3 bedrooms. Although they closed, they did not latch shut. We had to put our backpacks against them so they would stay shut while we were dressing, etc.

We would not hesitate to stay here again and/or recommend it to family and friends. From the start of our reservation process, Cathy was responsive and beyond helpful. We really appreciated her help!

Perfect weekend stay!

  • 5 of 5

PROS: The property is just as beautiful in person. Cathy did a great job if any communication was necessary and was always helpful. The walk on the beach was perfect. If the weather had been nicer we would've grilled and hung outside in the backyard more - sad we couldn't enjoy it because of the rain. We plan to be back next year and would absolutely rent the house again. CONS: None.

Private, relaxing getaway with unbeatable view of the lake

  • 5 of 5

What a pleasant surprise to find Lure of the Lake even better than the pictures. From the cozy bedrooms to the spacious family room and well appointed kitchen, this property exceeded expectations. The sun room / dining area was comfortable for our party of 6 and we enjoyed all our meals overlooking the crashing waves.

Beach access is easy and convenient and the nearby wineries offer plenty to do.

Cathy called the morning of arrival to let us know the house was ready early and that she'd be lighting the pilot in the gas fireplace because the temperature would be dropping over the weekend (the heat in the house was sufficient on its own but we used the fire to help us forget it was blustery outside in April!). She stopped by while we were unpacking the cars to introduce herself and urged us to call if we had any concerns or needs whatsoever. She gave several winery recommendations and made us feel right at home.

All in all, this girls weekend was just perfect and several of us are thinking of returning with our kids next time! I've rented dozens of houses on VRBO and this one stands out in every way. You won't regret it (but dress appropriately and bring layers. It's still Erie ;)

A great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

There were 6 of us that rented this home for a weekend wine trail tour. We loved it! The location is great, the house is beautiful. Our first reaction was to stay at a hotel for the weekend, which would have meant that the 6 of us sitting and talking in the evenings would have been difficult. We loved being able to hang out together and watch tv, look at the lake (beautiful view!) and just talk.

Everything about this house made it feel welcoming! We hope to return in the future! In fact I've already told friends about it as a great get-away location.
