This original homestead cabin overlooks Cornelius Lake and is along side a salmon creek (runs of reds and silver salmon are in late August and September). This cabin sports views of Pioneer Peak and the surrounding Chugach Mountains. From the front deck, Alaska's beauty is abundant. The cabin is close to highways for easy access to the large variety of activities and sights available here in the Mat-Su Valley. Yet, it is also the perfect place to relax.
As cabin guests, you are welcome to walk up the driveway to our home's lakeside lower patio
( located on a different lake), find yourself a comfortable Adirondack chair and enjoy an evening bonfire, a cozy chat, and a glass of wine. ( see new photos) OR you may want to enjoy a BBQ dinner cooked on the deck and eaten at the picnic table right outside the cabin front door. While you are relaxing you may want to watch the pair of loons and a pair of white swans enjoying their summer visit to the lake. Birds abound and fly between the two lakes, so you can watch eagles hunting and riding the air currents as you enjoy a morning cup of coffee. The cabin is also creekside and from the cabin deck you can watch rainbow trout and ducks as they travel back and forth between the two lakes.
Use this cabin as a home base. Fishing spots, hiking areas, glaciers, animal farms, bike trails, shops, spas, gyms, and historic townsites are all located here in the Mat-Su Valley.
This log cabin has two cozy bedrooms upstairs. The larger one features a custom built pine queen size bed while the smaller one has 2 single beds. The new bathroom is located on the main floor and features a large tiled shower. The beautiful kitchen area has granite counter tops, an electric stove, microwave oven, coffee maker, refrigerator, and a washer and dryer. Linens and kitchen utensils, pots, and pans are provided. The living room has a comfortable leather couch, custom blinds for privacy, and large windows for gazing at the spectacular views of ' nature at its best'.
The cabin is not suited to folks with mobility issues or those who are traveling with very young children. The stairs are steep.

Bob and I have lived in Alaska for more than 36 years. We love living here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and we love our lives. Bob is a General Contractor who builds custom homes locally. I am a former teacher who loved working with students in our local public schools. Our two sons were hockey players growing up here in Alaska. Now, one of our sons is currently out of state attending graduate school, and our other son lives locally and works in Alaska as a civil engineer. We are a very busy and active family. For more than 10 years, Bob and our younger son had both run the Mt. Marathon race in Seward on the fourth of July. All four of us kayak and camp in Katchemak Bay and the Homer area most summers with friends. We also like to ride bikes, hike, fish, and play golf. We recently "re-homed" a middle-aged terrier that loves to go for hikes and walks with us. She is a great addition to our family.
Kathryn purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Kathryn chose Palmer
The Mat-Su Valley really has the best of what Alaska has to offer, and we have lived here for twenty eight years. We bought this amazing piece of property fourteen years ago. Bob built our beautiful home on the bluff overlooking one lake at the back of the property. On the front of the property is an original homestead cabin built in 1958. It took us 3 years to remodel the inside of the cabin while saving many of the original logs. It is beautiful and we now would like to share it with visitors in the summer months. In the winter months, the cabin is rented for the school year schedule, early August through late May, to a teacher.
What makes this Cabin unique
If you enjoy watching birds like we do, you will especially enjoy your visit to this homestead cabin on Cornelius Lake . In addition to local water fowl and eagles, we get to enjoy viewing the many migratory birds who visit Alaska in the summer. Neklason Lake has been the temporary summer home to a pair of white swans who raised six signets here. The parents lead the flotilla in parade style around the shore of the lake everyday when the signets were strong and big enough. The parents modeled for their youngsters 'touch-and-go' landings on water, traveling between our two lakes. We watched all 6 of the signets grow to young adults and then one day we watched all 8 of them fly south together in late September. It was soooo exciting!! Hopefully they will return every summer and you can watch them too.

Lakeside Cabin-Palmer Alaska
The stay was awesome. Kathryn makes it seem like home. The cabin is very clean and cozy.
Great location! Cute cabin.
Kathryn and Bob were excellent hosts and their little cabin is easy access to both Palmer and Wasilla. Kathryn had the place stocked with many extras like popcorn, coffee, coffee filters, spices and body soap. We really enjoyed having free use of the kayaks and canoes. She has an assortment of life jackets in average adult sizes. The lake was very pretty and relaxing to cruise around. My only caution would be that the stairs to the bedrooms might be a little tricky for someone with difficulty handling stairs. They are a bit steep. I highly recommend otherwise. Our two kids ages 12 and 17 were with and they love it also! Thanks for a great stay! We'll be back!
Great place to stay! Close to Palmer and Wasilla!
Would definitely stay here again when visiting Alaska!
Amazingly beautiful, tranquil & comfortable!
This cabin is exactly as described and is as beautiful as the pictures! The location is easy to find, centrally located to many activities/attractions with easy in/out access. It is very clean, well maintained, turn-key ready with many amenities. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to my family/friends. The owners are very pleasant, helpful, will answer all your questions and make you feel right at home. We visited many of the local attractions as well as Denali, Seward & Homer; which made this cabin a nice home base (centrally located). The summit flight over Denali was magnificent! It was our first time to visit Alaska and our time spent at this cabin will surely be one of our fondest memories. Thank you!!
Cozy cabin in a fantastic location!
Loved staying here! The cabin is fantastic - cozy, well-furnished, and well stocked. The owners make sure that everything you could possibly need - besides food- is provided. They even provided us with bread and yummy homemade jam! The cabin is convenient to Anchorage, Talkeetna, etc. and has an awesome view of the lake and mountains across the road. Like other reviewers mentioned, the stairs to the bedrooms are steep but we had no problems with them (and I have a bum ankle). There is a full size fridge and a washer/dryer, which was important to us as we used the cabin as a "base" and were there several days. This is a cabin that we would definitely stay at again!
Great cabin, even better host!
This cabin was a perfect fit for our family. Kathryn supplied more 'basics' than other rentals we have used; cooking spices, baggies, etc. Our boys enjoyed the cabins amenities; canoeing and the fire pit. The view and location are great; the Portage area to the south of Anchorage and the Matanuska glacier to the north are both easy day trips, and Hatchers pass which offers many hiking opportunities is within 30 min. Packing supplies for all of Alaska's adventures is a challenge, but Kathryn was happy to let us borrow items that were not practical for us to pack; (cooler for our fishing trip). Great family friendly cabin.
We are located on N. Engstrom Rd. in the core area of the Mat-Su Valley which makes for easy access to the following attractions: Matanuska and Knik Glaciers, guided rafting trips, Iditarod Headquarters-Wasilla, Hatcher's Pass and the Independence Mine, Musk Ox and the Reindeer Farms-Palmer, Alaska Railroad Depots-Wasilla and Palmer, salmon and trout fishing, flight seeing tours, and Denali Park
