About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-4)

This original homestead cabin overlooks Cornelius Lake, is along side a salmon creek, and sports views of Pioneer Peak and the surrounding Chugach Mountains. From this cabin, Alaska's beauty is abundant. The cabin is close to highways for easy access to the large variety of activities and sights available here in the Mat-Su Valley. Yet, it is also the perfect place to relax. You will want to enjoy a BBQ dinner eaten at the picnic table right outside the cabin front door. While you are relaxing you will want to watch the pair of loons and a pair of white swans enjoying their summer visit to the lake. Birds abound between these two lakes, so you can watch eagles hunting and riding the air currents as you enjoy a morning cup of coffee. The cabin is also creekside, so you can watch both red and silver salmon (runs take place in August and September if you are here) as they make their way to their spawning grounds.

Use this cabin as a home base. Fishing spots, hiking areas, glaciers, animal farms, bike trails, shops, spas, gyms, and historic townsites are all located here in the Mat-Su Valley.

This log cabin has two cozy bedrooms upstairs. The larger one features a custom built pine queen size bed while the smaller one has 2 single beds. The new bathroom is located on the main floor and features a large tiled shower. The beautiful kitchen area has granite counter tops, an electric stove, microwave oven, coffee maker, refrigerator, and a washer and dryer. Linens and kitchen utensils, pots, and pans are provided. The living room has a comfortable leather couch, custom blinds for privacy, and large windows for gazing at the spectacular views of ' nature at its best'.

The cabin is not suited to folks with mobility issues or those who are traveling with very young children. The stairs are steep.

Keywords: historic log cabin, lakefront and creek access, mountain views, centrally located, easy access to highways, 1 hour drive from Anchorage

About Kathryn

Bob and I have lived in Alaska for more than 30 years. We love living here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and we love our lives. Bob is a General Contractor who builds custom homes locally. I am a teacher who loves working part time with elementary students at a local public school. Our two sons were hockey players growing up here in Alaska.. Now, one son is currently out of state attending graduate school, and the other son lives in rural Alaska and is currently working as a civil engineer.

We are a very busy and active family. For more than 10 years, Bob and our younger son had both run the Mt. Marathon race in Seward on the fourth of July. All four of us kayak and camp in Katchemak Bay and the Homer area most summers with friends. We also like to ride bikes, hike, fish, and play golf. We recently "re-homed" a middle-aged terrier that loves to go for hikes and walks with us. She is a great addition to our family.

Kathryn purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Kathryn chose Alaska

The Mat-Su Valley really has the best of what Alaska has to offer, and we have lived here for twenty seven years. We bought this amazing piece of property thirteen years ago. Bob built our beautiful home on the bluff overlooking one lake at the back of the property. On the front of the property is an original homestead cabin built in 1958. It took us 3 years to remodel the inside of the cabin while saving many of the original logs. It is beautiful and we now would like to share it with visitors in the summer months. In the winter months, the cabin is rented for the school year schedule, early August through late May, to a teacher .

What makes this cabin unique

If you enjoy watching birds like we do, you will especially enjoy your visit to this homestead cabin on Cornelius Lake . In addition to local water fowl and eagles, we get to enjoy viewing the many migratory birds who visit Alaska in the summer. Neklason Lake has been the temporary summer home to a pair of white swans who raised six signets here. The parents lead the flotilla in parade style around the shore of the lake everyday when the signets were strong and big enough. The parents modeled for their youngsters 'touch-and-go' landings on water, traveling between our two lakes. We watched all 6 of the signets grow to young adults and then one day we watched all 8 of them fly south together in late September. It was soooo exciting!! Hopefully they will return this coming summer and you can watch them too.

We have a fire-pit area with wood available for family campfires on a lower patio located on the shore of our lake. Let us know if you would like to use this area for a hotdog roast with "some-mores" for dessert or a glass of wine around the fire at night. Our home is located at the rear of the property on another lake (out of sight of the cabin). The above amenities may be used by paying guests only.

Great property, great location, overall great experience for first ever trip to Alaska!

  • 5 of 5

The property was even better than described in the listing description. Very clean and well maintained. The owners were awesome! We knew we were going to have a very late arrival, so they were so kind to leave some breakfast goodies for us in the refrigerator. And they were very helpful in offering suggestions for activities.

The cabin and property overall was immaculate. The Wasilla location is great, as we were able to see many great sites within a few hour's drive - from Denali (to the north) to the Portage Glacier in the Chugach National forest (south of Anchorage), and many places in between. I would highly recommend this property for both the ideal location and wonderful hospitality shown by the owners.

Be sure to bring a good camera, as the scenery is spectacular (and a smartphone camera just can't capture the detail)!

Our stay.

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderfull expierience for us. I really wish I could say the place was bad just so we could rent it more frequently. However that is not possible. I can say that I hope to go back and stay at the most wonderfull place in the world and with the people that helped us with our expierience. Bob and Katheryn are the greatest. Good down to earth people. They are the the most helpful people for vacationing folks. Three Bears grocery store was great as well we didn't want for any thing. If you want peace good food good stay and the best tenants that I have ever expierienced you can go stay at their place. It was the best vacation we have ever had and we will go back. Thank you so much Bob and Katheryn.

Alaska 2016

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the cabin. The home was perfect for our stay, clean, comfortable for the two of us, comfy bed, lovely view from the deck, all amenities of home and the owners were wonderful. Kathryn brought fresh salmon, bagels, cream cheese and her smile to welcome us. We also enjoyed the fire pit and canoe available for our use. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed a canoe ride around the lake. It was so pleasant to sit on the porch and listen to the Creek. Very lovely grounds. The cabin is so close to resturants, stores coffee and served as a home base for us. We would recommend this cabin and we would absolutely stay again. Thanks for making our stay so memorable.

Three Generations

  • 5 of 5

My mom, oldest teenage daughter, and I love the cabin! The owners are wonderful hosts who are available, as needed, and provided homemade salmon (YUMMY!) and other breakfast items for our first morning. The cabin is located down the lane from the main house (out of sight) and on the outskirts of Wasilla. There is a small grocery store approximately 3 – 5 minute drive on E Palmer-Wasilla Hwy, but we tended to travel out to E Park/Hwy 3 to the Fred Meyer grocery/retail store approximately 10 – 15 minute drive. The cabin provides the comforts of home….kitchen has necessary equipment, beds are comfortable, HOT water, washer/dryer, internet access, black out shades to block the midnight sun to name a few comforts. Yes, the stairs are steep and narrow, as mentioned, but use of the handrails makes it easy to manage or crawling on all fours works, too. :-) We are physically able folks, so we thought of it as an adventure. The few times we were not out hiking, driving the country side, or being obvious tourists, we would open the two windows that created a cross breeze through the entire upstairs. Aw…the fresh air! The owners offered the use of their canoe and row boat, but we did not have time. On our next chance to visit Alaska, we will definitely check availability of this cabin. We had a wonderful time, appreciate the hospitality, and enjoyed staying in the cabin. Thank you for everything!
