The Isle of Palms, like all barrier islands, has a dynamic beach near the inlet that separates the island from Dewees Island. The ebb and flow of the changing tides, through the inlet, creates and moves sand bars just off shore. These sandbars will channel waves between them, resulting in the massive buildup of sand along portions of the island where other areas may develop temporary erosional hot spots. These hot spots will feature a sand beach throughout the day outside an hour or so before and after high tide. Where a dry sand beach may be limited in these few areas at high tide, walking either direction will lead to an area where the sandbars have created an expansive beach to enjoy at any tide.

This is a great, very relaxing Victorian-styled beach cottage with a homey feel, high ceilings, and real artwork, so unlike the cookie-cutter lodging you see elsewhere. The kitchen was well stocked, counter space ample, and the knives were easily sharpened with the sharpener in the drawer. The small amount of carpeting in the home was clean and had no odor and I had no worries that anyone would be looking through the shades on this very private street. As for the lack of full length mirrors, we consider that a blessing at our age. All the bathrooms had ample light and large mirrors above the vanities. The front and back porches were a great place to relax and the home is convenient to the beach, pool and cabana area, restaurants, bike rentals, and the tennis complex.
We will definitely stay here again!
I have been coming to Wild Dunes with my family since the early 90's - it is like a second home. My husband and I got married here 6 years ago and come down every year with our families to celebrate. We've never been disappointed by the homes that Beachside Vacations manages and for the most part this house was enjoyed by all. We usually rent houses by what works for us, the family, and mostly the reviews - we took a chance by renting this house without any reviews so I thought, best to give it a review for others!
This house is convenient and a perfect location! Short walk to the beach (less than 3 minutes), quiet street off the beaten path, and a lagoon to watch the alligators and turtles. The front and back porches were enjoyed by everyone! It's where we started and ended our day. The main living space is perfect and very comfortable (our party included 6 adults). The cooks were very pleased with the kitchen layout, storage and how well equipped it was (minus the dull cutting knives, but I don't cook so it didn't bother me!)...but it does not have a garbage disposal. That did bother me since I was usually on clean-up duty.
The first master bedroom is on the first floor and was very comfortable, no complaints there. The second & third floor was a little different... You are greeted on the second floor with carpet that is horribly stained and dirty in the hallway (the carpet also covers the stairs to third floor and the bedroom). The second floor master bedroom is very generous with a nice size private bath and a huge walk-in closet, but the window treatments/ blinds are completely see-through (lots of daylight and changing in the bathroom at night!). Also on the second floor is the small guest bedroom with the bunk beds and the guest bath. The other guest bedroom is on the third floor - which isn't a bedroom at all! It's a loft with 2 full beds. No closet, no dresser to put your clothes in, and no door! That was annoying. My husband and I would have to go to the second floor to use the bathroom and turned the other guest bedroom into our dressing room . The window treatments/blinds are also completely see-through in the loft. The other odd thing that we noticed is that there isn't one full-length mirror in the whole house. This house is a 50/50. Great living space and main floor but the second and third floor were a bit disappointing. Not the best house for 6 adults.
