3 generation vacation

  • 5 of 5

Great location, great view, it was a memorable vacation and we would stay there again in a heart beat!! We loved the history of this place. My mom shared stories of her one room school days and we also talked about the stories my grandma had told over the years as well. Thank you so much for sharing this rare beauty! In just 3 short days we went to Shells Falls, Devils Kitchen, Buffalo Bill Center in Cody, Hot Springs in Thermopolis and drove the Wind River Cannon.

Rock School House

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed meeting John, the owner. He helped us with discussions on places we wanted to see and how best to get there. The house is interesting, quiet and secluded. The star gazing was incredible!!! John may want to consider how to get some air conditioning to the loft area, it is very hot at night, even with outside temperatures in the mid to high 60's . We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the property to other folks. Thank you John for pie and ice cream!!!

Great place to stay, filled with history

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place to stay, rustic yet modern. What a unique adventure to have had the opportunity to stay in the school where my ancestors were educated. It had all the amenities we needed, the wifi was great. Great sleeping accommodations. The kitchen is great and the view from the desk is fabulous. On a short walk we saw an abundance of wildlife. The owner is exceptional and very responsive. Even had pie and ice cream in the freezer for our arrival. Highly recommend.

Magical for nature and history lovers!

  • 5 of 5

This is an absolutely magical place in which to stay and explore the Big Horn Basin country. The historic building is filled with interesting artifacts, art, and books on a wide variety of Western topics. It is well situated to explore in all directions - we enjoyed a trip east to Sheridan through the Big Horn Mountains, and another west to Cody where the highlight is the Buffalo Bill Center. The addition of kitchen and upstairs loft bedroom is in keeping with the original historic building and is a very comfortable and relaxing space. We brought most of our food and cooked great meals right there which we enjoyed eating on the back porch. There are fans that keep the place a nice temperature despite the heat. We were greeted by a pie and ice-cream waiting in the freezer, as well as with beautiful fresh flowers on the table. We never met the owner John, but he was very quick to communicate and make himself available if we had any concerns. This is a very special place. Hope to be back!

Loved the Stone School

  • 5 of 5

My daughter, who lives in Montana, met me at the Stone School for Memorial Day weekend. My first impression of the place was that it was larger than the photos made it seem. We instantly felt welcomed as we stepped into the vaulted ceiling kitchen with the large farm-style dining room table.

The entire place echoes with history. We had a wonderful time looking over the library of books and getting a feel for the place. There is historical information about the school in a couple of places - and it was fun to read about how the building served the community.

We went into Greybull a couple of times and walked on the pathway that is near the creek. We didn't go to any restaurants but found the local grocery store to have a much larger selection than I would have guessed for a town that size! The local police are also very friendly as we ended up with a stray dog which needed to be reunited with her owner. We cooked all of our meals at the school, and the kitchen is fairly well outfitted.

The Stone School is the perfect place to be if you are needing a break from your regular life. The peace and quiet are glorious - and the night sky is breathtaking. The property owner, John, warmly welcomed us and had a pie with ice cream there for us to enjoy. I would love to go back - and was already figuring out when I could return as I made the drive home.
