I grew up in Ontario, Canada but spent many vacations in Florida and I have always been intrigued by the ocean. I've worked in the healthcare Industry for over 25 years. My husband is a geologist. born and raised in Alberta, Canada.
We love to travel with our family, kayaking, photography, hiking, quading, and seeking out new adventures. There is so much to discover in Costa Rica and we hope you will fall in love with the country and the people like our family did. Darrell and Phyllis Cotterill
Phyllis Cotterill purchased this condo in 2010
We first visited this area in 1996 and fell in love with everything about Costa Rica, the people, flora, fauna, and the exceptional beauty of the Gold Coast. It has been my husbands mission to find a place and now we have our piece of paradise. Close to the airport, and this area has just about everything you may want to do. We go to beaches where we are the only ones on it. We learn new things about the country every time we come here and we can't wait till it is time for the next adventure.
You can here the sounds of the surf. Howler monkeys come to feed right on the property.
You can walk to 3 great beaches. The sunsets from the balcony are spectacular. You don't need to have a car. You can join in a soccer game with the locals. Sailing in the bay looking for dolphins, whales, turtles, mantas, etc. Learn to speak spanish at the Spanish School in Flamingo.
“This was our first trip to Costa Rica. We had a wonderful month in Potrero. It is the perfect town if you are looking for a local experience away from the big resorts. The view of the bay was wonderful and there is great wildlife viewing right from your deck. The howler monkeys and chickens got you up each morning. The views were even nice on those wet days in the rainy season with great lighting shows in the sky. Two beaches and a few places to eat were walkable but the last couple hundred yards back up to the villa is up a very steep hill. Several other beaches and places to eat were just a short drive. The villa is nicely furnished and has almost everything you need for the beach such as umbrellas, towels, rafts, etc. The villa had a lot of nice touches and if we needed something we usually found it in the villa. The small pool was just what we needed for a break from the heat. We had a couple issues such as a water leak and an A/C unit that stopped working. The manager, Lindsey, was very responsive and got a repair person out for a quick fix each time. Lindsey was also helpful getting us a cleaning lady and helping us with any little thing we needed. She got us in touch with a shuttle service from the airport and a local car rental place that dropped off and picked up the car at the villa for no extra charge. Get four wheel drive if you really want to explore. Phyllis the owner was also very nice and helpful. She and her husband gave us plenty of suggestions for things to do and places to see or eat. You can use the villa as a base for many different day tours if you want to see more than the beaches. There is even a bar, La Perla, within a short drive that has good draft beer which is unique as it was the only draft beer I found in the country. Overall we had a wonderful experience and fell in love with Costa Rica.”
House as described, very comfortable for four adults and two kids. Area was convenient to multiple beaches and Liberia airport.
The villa is lovely and in a beautiful setting with a view of the ocean. It has every amenity you could need including a small pool. Close to (10 mins walk) wonderful quiet beaches.
We saw monkeys and iguanas from our villa and a five minute walk away could watch pelicans feeding in the ocean.
The villa is three floors and we enjoyed having all that space. If you have really young children or have difficulty with stairs, however, it might be a challenge . We have kids in grades 4 and 6 so it was not a problem and it was nice for them to have their own space and floor.
Yes, monkeys, dogs and roosters could be heard but with Air conditioning on at night it wasn't issue.
Villa owner was very helpful with directions and suggestions for sightseeing.
We'd definitely return.
We had a wonderful stay and time at Phyllis' beautiful home, villa celeste in playa Potrero. The house is equipped with everything you can possibly need, but the best part for us was the master bedroom with views overlooking the pacific. We also loved the shower/tub, pool and air temperatured jacuzzi. I would highly recommend asking how the dish washer is operated when checking in, as it temperamental. This will save you time figuring it out. Also, we would highly recommend renting a car to drive around to the best beaches, which are plentiful but not close enough to walk to from the Vila (in our opinion). We loved playa conchal, brasilito, flamingo and avellanas. There is also plenty of adventure offered in Costa Rica like surfing, hiking near the volcanos, zip-lining, horse back riding, tubing, sailing & snorkeling and taking a boat ride through the jungle. Make sure you take advantage of all of these. There are also many great restaurants in and near the town, as well as supermarkets. Jack, the builder of the villa also lives on the premise, so you can also ask him for advice anytime. He's a hoot! If you are a light sleeper, I suggest bringing ear plugs as there are some roosters and dogs, that tend to create their own orchestra during the night and early morning. All in all, we loved our stay here and even stayed longer than originally planned. We would highly recommend it.
After sorting through many property reviews we chose Villa Celeste and were very pleased with our choice. The house was fully stocked upon arrival with ample paper supplies and cooking necessities, as well as some groceries to get us started! We were lucky to have the property to ourselves while we were there off season. The grounds are great with a lot of birds and, yes, monkeys occasionally to view. We opted not to rent a car and this worked out. Even in low season there were buses and short walks to Sol Y Mar restaurant, which we recommend, as well as Las Brisas on the beach, also recommended. We found a great taxi driver and not having a phone we only needed to ask at the restaurants or supers to call Michael from Flamingos Taxis (he lives in Potrero) and was punctual and reasonably priced. The property has great proximity to Sugar Beach where we had to be for a wedding. We booked a few tours with Eco Trans, as well as airport pickup, and we recommend their tours and transportation services. Eco Trans and really all taxi drivers had no problem finding the house. We truly enjoyed our peaceful visit; the house had everything we needed and was easily kept comfortable temperature-wise with AC and fans and sometimes just opening the windows to catch the early morning breeze and wild life. Enjoyed Costa Rica and Potrero even in the slow season and hope to return. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home.
If you seek a peaceful and tranquil experience in an unspoiled paradise, a Costa Rican vacation is for you!
The Villa Celeste is a home away from home, yet it offers an exotic adventure just outside the door! The beautifully appointed 3 level accommodation features hand carved custom hard wood furnishings, deluxe finishes, comfy beds, and a breathtaking view of the ocean. Tropical sights and sounds abound! The home has all the amenities you could want and more. I felt very welcomed!
We started our mornings mostly reading while we sipped rich Costa Rican coffee and snacked on fresh fruit on the balcony or by the pool. Monkeys would swing in nearby trees, and on occasion an iguana would slowly navigate a branch…. Our day times were spent exploring nearby towns and the abundant deserted beaches. These beaches span for miles! The sand is fine and littered with exotic shells. The water was warm and crystal clear. Large waves made it a surfer’s paradise! We also enjoyed sailing as dolphins and multiple stingrays swam alongside us!
There is a local grocery store where we purchased delicious farm fresh eggs and everything else we needed. We also frequented a nearby fruit/vegetable stand that had fresh picked produce and homemade cheese.
It gets dark by about 6:30 PM so we would typically find a great vantage spot to experience the perfect sunsets, have a delicious seafood meal in a local restaurant, or head straight home to create a meal ourselves and settle in with all the comforts of home.
Another highlight of my trip was visiting Arenal Volcano in the center of Costa Rica. The drive there took the best part of the day, but there were many nice little shops and restaurants we stopped at en route. I bought some beautiful hand carved exotic wood pieces to keep my memories fresh. US cash was accepted everywhere.
Along the way we stumbled across a funky yoga retreat/restaurant called Mystica! With a tree house retreat, private yoga patio with waterfall, and colourful décor it will be on my wish list for visiting next time.
The Tabacon spa is located at the foot of the volcano. The grounds are exquisite with volcano heated mineral waters, beautiful foliage and tropical flowers. You must visit the grounds even if you do not go for spa treatments! It is a perfect honeymoon destination!
The trip was an enriching experience for me! I highly recommend putting this on your list of vacation destinations.
My goodness where to start!!! My husband and I decided that costa rica would be a great vacation spot for the month of February. Without really knowing much about the country we quickly got online searched a few vacation spots and decided this villa best suited our criteria. I have never seen nor stayed at a place quite this nice before!!!!! The view is absolutely spectacular , the ocean is beautiful and also are the sunsets! In the villa there is oodles of room for many people (great for small or large families) the master bedroom is fabulous!!!!! The bed is probably thee comfiest bed I have ever slept on, it's like sleeping on a cloud!!! The greatest things about how the villa was constructed no matter what level you are on weather it's the main , middle, or the top floor every view is amazing!!! The walks down to the beaches was nice and not far at all, a few minuets and your at the beach! The monkeys were another high light to the stay. Other countries my husband and I have toured you have to venture quite far to see the wildlife. That is defiantly no the case here the wildlife is so spectacular!!! The monkeys are everywhere but never bothered us, I think I was the one who bothered them :) its so surreal to be able to be that close to the wildlife. The local restaurants are very cute very Costerican :) if your looking for McDonalds this is not where you will find that, this area is so authentic you get the costa rica experience weather it's at the restaurants, the local grocery store, or going to the beaches you won't be disappointed! The beaches are wonderful!!!!! We could walk to 3 different beaches that were all breath taking! They were never crowded they are so big that everyone has their own spot comfortably :) I was blown away with how clean the beaches are as well (you never know what to expect but I was blown away!) the local tourism center was fantastic the men that run it were very helpful when we needed to book our tours , it was literally a 2 min walk from the villa to the tourism center. The options are endless regarding tours! All in all this experience was AMAZING we will defiantly be going back year after year to the same villa, you just can't top the experience you can have staying here :) hope my review is helpful to those who are considering costa rica as a destination for your next family getaway trust me you won't be disappointed!!!!
