We rented this wonderful machiya for our family of five: grandma, mom, dad, son (age 15) and daughter (age 13) for four nights while we were in Kyoto. The host, Koki, was very communicative by email both prior to arrival and during our stay. She sent us very clear, step-by-step directions for how to find the house with several google maps, photos and arrows. This helped us walk right to the house. The only confusion was that the house was painted brown and the photo showed a white house. We located the lock box and open the screens to a beautifully kept traditional Japanese home. The hosts provided a few hotel-type goodies, including bath salts, socks, and toothbrushes and razors. They also have a folder with some information about local restaurants. The layout was spacious enough for our family. There are two bedrooms upstairs (very steep) that accommodated four of us. Grandma slept in one of the extra rooms downstairs. You sleep on futons, which are on tatami mats. The comforters are luxurious. The bathroom, shower, wash machine and sink area are attached to the house through an extended wing. These are all modern and really nice, just a little cold because this part of the house has an opening at the top of the screens that goes outside to the garden. I would not consider the garden "elegant," but the view from the top bedroom across the river and to the mountains makes up for it. The kitchen is a galley style and we were able to use it for dinner prep and breakfasts. Bonus: there is a supermarket across the river (5min walk) that has everything you could possibly need and more. The location by the river is excellent for early morning runs (I spotted two deer and birds) or walking. It's just a mile and a half to Shimogamo Shrine for some close sight-seeing. The location seemed farther away from the trail of shrines and temples, but we felt very fortunate to have found this machiya for its comfort, access to supermarket and transportation, and quiet location. Highly recommend!
