My wife and I travel quite a bit due to my line of work. We have stayed in many cabins, cottages, B&B's and I must say this was one of the best properties we have encountered. The cottage was well appointed, clean and very comfortable. The surrounding grounds were beautiful. We enjoyed walking the estate and visiting the horses. It is really a beautiful cottage. Cliff and Chris were some of the most gracious and pleasant hosts we have ever encountered. They were extremely responsive to any questions we had and took their time to give us a delightful tour of the estate house they are renovating. Their attention to detail in the renovation is outstanding and we look forward to future stays in the cottage and the "soon to be opening" Bed and Breakfast. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area this should be your #1 pick. Whether for a small or large group, this property can easily accommodate you. It is very convenient to Natural Bridge, Lexington, VMI, Buena Vista. We can't say enough good things about our stay. Just a great experience. We hope to visit again soon.
Top shelf property. It is by far the biggest renovation project that I have ever personally seen a pair of people take on. Our cottage was great. The main manor is out of this world and the property has a nice view of multiple overlapping ridge lines.
I can't say enough about our stay. This is a gorgeous property. The cottage balances the availability of 5 bedrooms with the coziness you would want. Cliff was so welcoming and available if we had any questions. He even rushed to the store and surprised us with coffee pods when we mentioned we needed to get some for the coffee maker! I would come back again as would my friend. As dog lovers - I should also mention that the owners are animal lovers too and took pleasure in meeting our pups. They also encouraged us to walk the property and I can't tell you how much my dogs loved romping through the expansive fields on the estate. Just amazing an experience. We will definitely go back again and recommend Vine Cottage to our friends. Thanks Cliff!!!!
I feel that I really cannot speak highly enough of this property and the owners! My husband's father and siblings all live in different states across the country, and so twice a year we rent a house and all come together for a week. We have been doing this for 5 years or so, and so we have rented a lot of houses, and I think this is the best one we have had!
The house is absolutely beautiful inside, very historic and lots of woodwork. Big beautiful windows. We stayed for a week during the winter, and the view was lovely, I imagine it is even more so when all the trees are green again! Unfortunately, the interstate is not far from the property, and you can see it from the kitchen window. I imagine this is also much better when the trees can block this view a bit more.
The house also has very spacey rooms and an impressive amount of storage space. We really loved all of the closets and shelves throughout the property that made our stay super convenient and organized. Also, we really loved the furniture choices. The beds especially were incredibly comfortable! And the couch and sitting chairs in the living room were very comfy as well!
The location was perfect too. Only 5 minutes from Natural Bridge and 20 minutes from Lexington. We went into Lexington a lot to explore downtown and eat at some nice restaurants. My husband works at Washington and Lee and so we enjoyed showing our family around the campus.
The actual grounds the cottage is on is about 50 acres, and was very lovely to walk through. There were also horses that we could feed! The owners gave us a tour of the estate house while we were there, which was fascinating. The tour must have lasted over 2 hours, there were so many rooms and levels to see, and history to learn!
Finally, I think what made our stay so enjoyable was the accessability of our hosts! The owners actually live on site in the estate house. A few times during our stay we found we needed something (one time we accidently got locked out!) and Cliff responded to messages within 5 or 10 minutes, and were able to come to the house for whatever we needed within 15 minutes, which was fantastic! We were just so impressed by how gracious, hospitable, and accessible they were, and would highly recommend their property to anyone looking to stay in the Virginia Blue Ridge!
We had a wonderful time. Because we came at Christmas Mr. Devito decorated our cottage with a beautiful Christmas tree and accents. This is the perfect indication of his attention to detail. He graciously gave all of us a tour of the historic mansion. We immediately felt at home and we are looking forward to our next visit
My family just finished up our second stay in Vine Cottage--and I'm sure it won't be the last. This house is *much* nicer than other rental houses that we have used over the years: it is clean, comfortable, and spacious, and it just feels like a home! The kitchen has plenty of space (and all of the basics that you need to cook a nice meal).
What really makes this location special, though, is the thoughtful and attentive (but not intrusive) owners, and their beautiful historic estate! The property features an amazing mansion (the "manor") from 1806--which the owners are currently renovating to open as a bed-and-breakfast soon. We got a private tour, and it's clear that they are preserving this beautiful home with a careful attention to detail and focus on quality. When the manor does open as a B&B, it will be truly amazing! Both Vine Cottage and the manor have picturesque views of the surrounding estate, including fields (which our dogs really enjoyed), pond, and trees.
Vine Cottage is located on the historic Forest Oaks estate and is conveniently located near the historic town of Lexington, home to Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The cottage is located just minutes away from the Natural Bridge, Virginia Safari park, Natural Bridge zoo and the James River.
