About Tom McHugh
We moved to Alburgh in 2001 to live on the lake and be able to enjoy it year -round.
Tom McHugh purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Tom McHugh chose Alburgh
When we purchased, there was another smaller cottage on the property, but it needed a lot of work. We replaced it in 2012 with the new expanded cottage. it has only been available for use by family and friends until recently.

Great stay at Lake Champlain
We really enjoyed our stay at the Cottage. It was very comfortable, clean and well stocked.
Eating on the deck looking out at the water was fabulous along with views of the sunset from the dock. If we had any questions or needed something Tom was on it immediately. We would love to return to the Lake Champlain area again and would stay at this cottage. Thanks Tom, you were the perfect host!
Beautiful Lake! Great hosts! Only Memories!
What can I say that others haven't already mentioned? Cottage was fully equipped. Tom was extremely responsive and super thoughtful prior to arrival and throughout our stay. We stayed from last Friday thru Monday and we could not have enjoyed and been more comfortable with our stay.
The kitchen had everything possible. We cooked a few home cooked meals and ate on deck looking over Lake Champlain. Which is absolutely lovely! My husband fished off Tom's dock while I enjoyed a book from their bookshelf, on the porch swing. Tom was also kind enough to filet any fish caught off dock for us also. The smell in the air was so clean and the breezy days were absolute perfection.
We enjoyed borrowing Tom's kayaks and venturing out on the lake along too.
Property was very well maintained. If we had questions about air conditioner or TV, Tom
was there before we could press send on our email.
The location was great too. An hour north of Burlington. Less than an hour to Montreal. Hour and half to Stowe. It was perfect.
We had difficulty keeping Tv going without it cutting out but to be honest, we weren't there to watch tv when all you had to do was look out one of the many windows and look at beautiful Lake Champlain!
Thank you Tom for everything! We had not felt that relaxed in a long time and it was a perfect few days that kicked off our vacation.
You were an incredible host and made the stay care-free. Thank you! Great BabyMOON!!!!

Wonderful location for a couple's waterfront vacation
It's hard to find a good "beach cottage" for 2 but this one's ideal for a nice getaway in the Lake Champlain Islands, remote enough to escape the crowds but close enough to sample a variety of other travel experiences, including state parks, mountains, big cities and quaint villages—in Vermont, New York, or Canada. We made several day trips to nearby destinations, including Montreal.
The cottage is roomy and comfortable and well-equipped. The friendly, accommodating hosts welcomed us with complimentary Green Mountain coffee and Vermont maple syrup, to add to an ample supply of condiments and toiletries in the cupboards. Bookshelves and magazine tables were well-stocked, too, and in the bedroom, both an alarm clock and a calming sound-maker for sleeping. There was also a room air conditioner, which we didn't need.
For the lake, the hosts offered kayaks, a canoe, and a big inflatable raft for our use, along with a couple of Adirondack chairs on the pier, which gave us a lovely view of the sunset on several evenings! Wi-fi was good enough to keep up with emails and to get weather and travel information on the Web, as needed. TV worked well, too, although we didn't need or want to watch anything (except the lake views and sunset).
Really not much we could find fault with here, having enjoyed our stay as much as anywhere we've vacationed before. The refrigerator had a noisy compressor, we couldn't find any kitchen scissors, and the ceiling fan in the bedroom didn't seem to have a higher speed, but these are trivial gripes, easily corrected. As a lakefront community, Alburgh features a number of similar cottages and the basic characteristics of a small rural town, including the traffic noise of one main road and the faint but noticeable aromas of nearby farms. But oh, that beautiful Lake Champlain!
Great and relaxing weekend stay
My girlfriend and I stayed here for Columbus Day weekend as a getaway from city life, and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. The house looked newly renovated, was neat, clean, and was decorated in a relaxing spend-a-day-at-the-beach theme. We visited during early fall, so it was a bit too chilly to enjoy the water, but we appreciated being able to stroll out onto the dock and beach, just feet from the cottage porch.
The kitchen was fully stocked and the appliances were all new or like-new. The bed was big and comfortable and the bathroom was well maintained. It was very private, but Tom and Kathy were very attentive to our needs, even though they were stuck in their own travels by inclement weather (read: hurricane!). They even left us a gift bottle of pure maple syrup, which was an absolutely delicious and welcome surprise!
Another big plus is that it's minutes (literally) from the Canadian border, so we were able to take a quick jaunt into Montreal for the afternoon. We also visited Plattsburgh, NY which was a short drive over the bridge. The Lake Champlain Islands region in general was just beautiful.
There were a few minor drawbacks, however. The wifi was a little spotty, so we couldn't stream any media on our devices. Also, since we were there in October, the cottage got a little cold. It did not get cold enough to need the space heaters that were available, but an extra layer is probably advisable, depending on the season.
Overall, Tom and Kathy's cottage was a perfect venue for a near perfect Fall weekend. It is cozy and comfortable, a great place for some much needed R&R.
Lovely, spacious, immaculate cottage with nice deck. Unfortunately, no TV and Wi-Fi was very slow and often cut out.
So sorry about your difficulties Robert. We have upgraded WiFi and TV service since your stay, and hope that you'll consider us in the future. Tom
Immaculate little cottage in Lake Champlain
My Husband and I stayed for three Nights in this cozy cottage in August. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we could possibly need including coffee tea and cream. Beautiful view of the Lake from the deck. The owners were friendly and helpful. If we visit lake Champlain area again we will definitely be back. Thank you!
Thanks Ellen. We hope to see you again soon.
