About Don & Joanne McCarthy

We moved to the Cape in 1971 from the Boston area and raised 5 children here. This particular home was the grandparent's home since 1970 the land had been in the family since the turn of the century. In the last 2 years this home was totally refurbished and now is available to rent. After raising 5 children Joanne went back to school and received her master's degree in marriage and family therapy and presently works with parents of autistic children. Don worked in insurance and started his own agency in 1979 finally slowing down and selling it 2 years ago but still remains working part-time for the new owners. We have 9 wonderful grandchildren and all but one live close by so we are kept very busy with the ongoings of the grandchildren.

Don & Joanne McCarthy purchased this house in 1970

Why Don & Joanne McCarthy chose Cape Cod

This house was built by Joanne's parents in 1970 so the grandparents were able to see their grandchildren grow and raise their own children. With the grandfather now deceased and the grandmother in a nursing home the decision was made to keep the home in the family renovate it and rent it. It has been a wonderful place to raise our children.

What makes this house unique

One of the unique benefits of this home is that every thing in the home is new. New floors, carpeting, furniture, bedrooms sets and mattresses as well as new stainless steel appliances. We also put in a new heating system. Front porch is pleasant to sit on as well as the back deck. We also have a 3 season room with 14 new windows which lets in a lot of sunlight. The family room is one of the favorite rooms in the house with a comfortable sectional to relax on as you watch the large flat screen TV or enjoy a game of cards at the table at the other end of the room.

AWESOME!!

We would rent this house again in a heartbeat. Our family (very large) rent

twice a year on the cape and this house is at the top of the list.

The owners were good old fashion Cape Codders, good to their word like a

honest hand shake. We thank them for making our stay effortless.

Beautiful home on Cape Cod

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful and well maintained home. My family and I stayed for a long weekend to attend my nieces's wedding. Don and Joanne checked in with us on our arrival day and visited on day 2 to make certain the home met our expectations. We were able to visit Woods Hole, Bourne, Mashpee and the Scallop festival and the wedding festivities as well. The home is conveniently located off of 151. Shops and great restaurants near by.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My family rented this house for my Mom's 60th birthday celebration... and we all loved it! We have rented other homes before and this has been our favorite one so far. Right away, the personal touches were so welcoming and the house itself was super clean. And it was definitely big enough to accommodate all six adults.

The communication leading up to the trip was great and definitely worth mentioning. During the months prior, I had random questions that I emailed to them and I always got a prompt response.

Our favorite part of the house was the 3 seasons porch! We spent most of our time gathered here (dinners, cards games, chatting). We never used the kitchen table because we enjoyed being in the porch so much. Our family also enjoyed using the fire pit outside that was set up. We loved sitting around, making smores, and being all together!

Our entire experience was great... we would definitely recommend to others!

Clean home, great hosts, excellent layout of home

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated our father's 70th birthday on the cape, and Don and Joanne's home was perfect. Everything was clean (as noted by others) - the rooms, floor, and furniture - and the house is clearly cared for excellently. While "Cape Chic" looked fun in other properties we considered, we knew our parents would appreciate a nice, clean home for their visit. I knew we were in good shape when the first thing I heard was "This place is amazing!"

All we could need was provided as far as linens and kitchen items/utensils; we never felt like we were missing anything. We were really happy with the layout of the home, too, as it allowed for separate areas to eat, relax, and hangout throughout the day/night, which was helpful since we had a toddler with us who needed to turn in early.

The sunroom was breezy and a great place to read quietly or take a nap, the lawn outside afforded a football being tossed around, we were able to grill steaks for an evening, and the downstairs family room had a great setup with a sectional to comfortably watch movies that were showing on DirecTV.

Don and Joanne were really helpful, informative, and welcoming, and the house was a central location for us to make visits to head out for fishing in Buzzards Bay, take a day trip to Martha's Vineyard, and eat in nearby Mashpee Commons. It was an overall convenient spot to get to our activities (which ranged about 15-30 minutes in almost every direction) as well as get anything we needed from stores.

We'd love to be back here again - our stay was perfect and without issue.

If you are looking for a tranquil setting for your vacation while being close enough to golf, beaches, and shopping, this home fits the bill!

The home is located on a lovely wooded lot across from a 65 acre wildlife management area. One mile north at the intersection of Rt. 151 is the Cape Cod Fair Grounds, home to the Barnstable County Fair, Horse Shows, Dog Shows, and numerous events through out the year. Just in back of the Fair Grounds on Currier Rd. is the Audobon Society's, Ashumet Holly Reservation with its manicured trails for hiking and enjoying the wildlife. Continuing north on Currier Rd. for one mile you will come a public boat landing and small beach at Ashumet Pond.

The house is located in a perfect area for the golfers in your party. There are five courses within four miles of the house. Don will be happy to talk to your golfers and fill them in on course particulars. He plays them all and often.

There are several salt water beaches within three to eight miles from the house. Manauhant, Bristol, and Falmouth heights to name a few, but Old Silver Beach in North Falmouth provides the most beautiful sunsets of any of the beaches.

If you are looking for a unique shopping experience, Mashpee Commons is the place to go. There are many local shops and some of the large chain stores. There are numerous restaurants serving Italian, Greek, Chinese, French, and Bobby Byrnes Pub. There is also a bowling alley, The Lanes, that also serves food. There are a few places to get your ice cream cones, and Sweet Waves where you can make your own frozen yogurt sundaes. Or you can drive across the street to Smitty's on the rotary for Falmouth's best local ice cream. You can catch the latest movies at the theater by Sienna's Restaurant. They usually offer dinner and a movie specials. There is often special activities going on during different seasons of the year.

Across the street on the Rt.151 side is the Stop & Shop and across the Rt. 28 side of the Commons is Roche Brothers Supermarket. Both of those areas also have several restaurants and shops. The Cape Cod Children's Museum is a mile down Great Neck Road South toward New Seabury.

One of our families favorites is Coonamessett Farm on Hatchville Rd. just a few miles from the house. You can visit with several alpaca, miniature donkeys, and farm animals. You can feed the chickens and ducks and collect eggs to purchase. You can pick your own vegetables or purchase them in the store. Be sure and visit their gift shop upstairs and enjoy a snack on the porch over looking the farm. During the summer and early fall, they have Jamaican Nights with traditional food and music.

Main Street in Falmouth is another fun spot to stroll. There are some great shops and restaurants. There is usually some type of entertainment going on during the summer. There is a great playground for the kids and during the summer season you can have a ride on the Carousal of Light. The Falmouth Historical Society offers tours through their houses and gardens. It is located across from the Village Green.

Continuing through Falmouth Center go left at the Green and head to Woods Hole. The Marine Biological Labs and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Labs are located there. There is an aquarium with a hands on tank inside and seals outside for your enjoyment. The seals are fed at 4:30 P.M. daily and do a little show. The Steam Ship Authority Boats run out of Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard. The Island Queen also goes to the Vineyard out of the dock on Falmouth Heights Rd. That is closer to the house and has much better parking. It is a passenger ferry vs. the Steam Ship Authority boats which take both passengers and vehicles. On your way back to the house, take the shore road and stop at Nobska Light House for the perfect Cape Cod picture. By the way, if you are a bicycle enthusiast there is a bike path that runs from North Falmouth all the way to Woods Hole. It is a beautiful ride through woodlands, marsh areas, and beaches and you can stop when you get to the Hole at Pie in the Sky for a freshly made pastry or get fresh fish at several restaurants on the water.

We consider ourselves very blessed to live in such a beautiful area of our world, and we would be happy to have you visit us.

Cape Cod has a lot to offer you for a most memorable vacation!
