Space 1,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 3 Bath Rustic Beach House Located Across The Island From San Juan In

The Space

You will not find many places that so truly reflect the true Puerto Rican beach town vibe -- a little gritty, a little old school, and amazing for the natural beauty and old world Latin charm. The house will comfortably fit 8, with one master bedroom, one kids room with bunk beds and a pull out bed, and a separate upstairs suite accessed by an exterior stairway that has a king bed, several cots and a separate bathroom. Lots of outdoor patio space, internal living space is small, but you should be outside enjoying the weather! Perfect for one large family or two families with a couple kids each.

Guest Access

Three beaches within a 5 minute walk (and that's beach walking, not city "walking"), great local gems, but also McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Chili's and mainland style grocery stores within a short drive. Two malls, the cities of Ponce (museums, the Don Q mansion, the famous firehouse, etc.) and Mayaguez (the zoo, the university, etc.), surfing in Rincon, fishing and relaxing on Gilligan's Island, the colonial village of San German, the Guanica Dry forest preserve, coffee farms, native ruins, Arrecibo, golf, casinos and many other attractions within. 30-40 minute drive.

Interaction with Guests

We live in Boston, accessible by phone/text/email, but have a great caretaker to welcome you to the house and be nearby for any issue.

The Neighborhood

Three beaches a walking distance from the house, and some food windows a short walk away, and lots of nearby restaurants, gas stations, and stores a short drive away. It's a small beach town so most things get quiet early, though there is a pool hall down the street if you are adventurous.

Getting Around

No real public transport. Need a rental car.

Other Things to Note

The house is rustic -- no phone, AC only in the two first floor bedrooms (nice breeze in the upstairs bedroom), three bathrooms in old-school lovely neon pastel colors, tv and vcr/dvd player with no cable. You can pull a solid cell phone connection, but hopefully you are looking to disconnect. It's a get-away designed to get away, not stay connected to work or your favorite tv shows.

Doesn't really tell the truth

  • 3 of 5

Water was an issue... there was no water or very little pressure... they say there are linens but there was no linen for the king bed upstairs... not a good place to stay with a family and children...

Owner's Response: Abigail -- I am very sorry if you did not enjoy your stay. The water pressure in town is outside of our control, and is really the purview of the local water authority. That being said, we have had many renters at the house in the past, and the water pressure has always been acceptable. My apologies if it was particularly an issues during your stay. As for linens for the king bed, they are in the closet -- I am sorry you did not find them, and would have been happy to have our caretaker help you out if you had let me know about the issue. I did reach out to you after you checked in to offer any assistance I could, and the below was all I heard back: "Thanks a lot... we're having a great time and [the caretaker] is wonderful..."

House has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The inside is small but the outside space makes up for it and more. Near enough to beach so you can walk and at the same time keep away from the noise of the crowded beaches. Loved Manglillo Beach. Lots more private than Playa Santa.

Great time and place!

  • 5 of 5

We have a great time. Plenty of space with a great backyard with a bar, and barbecuing. Also great porch and two Hamacas to take a siesta. The house has towels, eating utensils and cooking utensils, just bring yourselves, food and enjoy. It is a quiet street and close to playa Santa and other beaches in the area. We probably come back again during January or February of next year. And plenty of space to dispose of the trash as well! Yes we had a great time!!! The price is a dream!!!!!

OK. It needs love.

  • 1 of 5

I spent many summers with my grandparents staying in several rental houses of the area. The beaches are pristine and you can breathe peace and nature In the air. This house has a great porch overlooking the ocean and it's steps away from the beach. However, with the house in question, we had several issues regarding the overall maintenance, which was almost nonexistent. The bathrooms, specifically the toilets, were cleaned before our arrival and perhaps the kitchen sink. Apart from that, the floors, window screens, ceiling fans, bed frames, windows, tables and chairs on the outside, table beside the clothes washer, and the upstairs bedroom were extremely dusty. Dust also saturated old exposed closets filled with leftover unusable items. Everything felt dirty, as if the house had been abandoned for months. Also, several window cranks were broken, so we couldn't open certain windows; the refrigerator had problems cooling down, so water filled the cheese drawer, and the second floor bathroom tiles were slippery and unattached to the floor. The trash can on the side of the house was full and smelly and had attracted hordes of flies that went inside the house as soon as we used the front door, which had a hole in the screen the size of my hand (the same was also true of the second floor room front door). At this point, I thought to myself: Doesn't Home Away charge me a cleaning fee? Anyway, the stairs for the second floor are rusted to the core and falling apart, and they are a dangerous hazard. My first night upstairs, I discovered that the door for that room did not lock at all due to woodworm and old age. Also the TV downstairs only had VHS or DVD choices because it is an analog, so you couldn't even watch local TV, which was what my grandpa wanted. This house has a lot of potential, but it needs a lot of love. Because of all these problems, we wasted precious time on the first and second day of our four day vacation dealing with issues which should have been dealt before we arrived. We paid our money, but the parties in charge did not do their job.

Owner's Response: The house is rustic, which is fully disclosed in the title, the description and the photos (as is the fact that the tv is just for watching movies). We do stress to potential guests that they should review all the details and the photos to decide if it is the right place for them. If you are looking for a luxury home, Casita El Paraiso is not for you. If you are looking for a nice, basic, wonderfully located beach spot at an economical price, it definitely is the place for you. Many other guests have stayed at the house this summer and previously (about 15 groups this year), have loved it, and plan to share the info with friends and family and return themselves. The house is not dirty -- it is cleaned and garbage removed between every guest. Our caretaker is available to address any issues immediately, and I provide my cell phone number to every guest to report a problem. We always try to make sure that guests are a good fit for the house. Unfortunately, that does not seem to have happened here, which is too bad.
