First Experience in the Keys

  • 4 of 5

In June we had a wonderful week stay at “The Markeysa”. There were 10 of us ranging in age from 68 to 1 year old. The grounds are absolutely lovely, felt like we were checked into a resort instead of a private home. We all enjoyed the wildlife on the property; the children named all the iguanas and enjoyed watching the land crabs, lizards and birds.

We are from the Philadelphia area and this was our first experience with the Keys so we were disappointed with the ocean experience or lack of. We were so excited to have our own private beach and the actual beach (sand) part was nice with palm trees, a hammock, a picnic table and chairs but the seaweed and the stuff that came along with it (trash) was shocking to us who are accustomed to the Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina and other Florida beaches/ocean BUT that was our unfamiliarity of the area not the fault of the property. Most of us never ventured passed the seaweed mess but the few that went pretty far off shore to snorkel said it was most enjoyable. They saw fish, coral, a sting ray and the highlight was a baby nurse shark that stayed still long enough for all of us to be called down and for the brave to venture out to see it and take underwater camera pictures of it. Kayaking was also enjoyed by some of us. My recommendation is “bring water shoes”!

The cottage was a bit smaller than we expected. My son, daughter-in-law and their one year old settled in there for one night but on the second night, after some rain, then encountered some pretty big bugs and moved up to the main house. We also experienced some sugar ants in the main house, also do to the rain, but called Freewheeler Vacations and they immediately had someone out to take care of both problems. Gotta expect bugs in Florida I guess!

The house was great and well equipped. Ample bath & pool towels, two pack-and-plays, a highchair, hair dryers, even movies, area magazine and books etc. Kitchen had everything that we needed.

The lap pool and hot tub were amazing, the kids were in the pool from the time they woke up until it was time for dinner and the adults also loved the entire pool area.

Freewheeler Vacations were the best! From my first contact with them regarding the property to the end of our stay they were just great. They answered my MANY questions and concerns and with the utmost speed and were always courteous. Brandi and Sandy thank you so much, you are the best!

To sum it up we were sorry to see the week end.

Great house for a Large Family

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this home! So much so that we extended our vacation by a few days! The home suited the needs of our 10 person family- ages 1-65. The beach, pool and outdoor area entertained all of us. There was no need to do any exursions with the kids, because there is so much to do at home. The pool is a lap pool with a small jetted tub- it worked great for our youngest swimmers. There are pool toys and beach toys provided. The beach has a wonderful hammock and plenty of soft sand to play in. The ocean entry is clean enough to play in most days, but occassionally the wind kicks up some ocean weeds. This did not bother us and we got our fill of ocean time. The adults enjoyed the kayaks.

The landscaping on the property is beautiful- and even better than in the pictures. There are quite a few creatures around that the kids enjoyed watching- iguanas, lizards and land crabs.

The home is well furnished and the beds are comfortable. Side note- there are 2 (maybe 3) pack and play cribs at the home.

The kitchen is well stocked and easy to cook in. The outdoor grill is very nice quality. The kitchen has a variety of high quality cookware, including some cast iron. We at many of our meals at home.

We made use of the convienient laundry facilities at the home. They also provide tons of beach towels.

The nearest full size grocery store is Winn Dixie- which is about 20 minutes away. For quick grocery pick ups we went to the Trading Post as well- it is closer but very expensive. For a fun outing look up Samantha from KeyZ Charters. She offers boat tours/snorkeling for all ages. For a great casual lunch go to Meat Eatery and Taproom - and Bobs Bunz for a good breakfast.

Family fun

  • 5 of 5

This house is terriffically accommodating for families with young children. I'm assuming the owners have a little boy. Lots of towels, including ones with hoods for kids. Every kitchen tool you might imagine. The gas stove is temperamental and the dishwasher needed anchoring. But the caretaker was sweet, efficient and capable so I'm sure the dishwasher and one broken drawer is fixed already.

Very comfortable beds. It's maybe a little dated but in a way we actually enjoyed. Not new but comfortable. Not modern but sensible. The beach was great. The hammock awesome. There is a jetty 100ft down. The pool is great. Salt water and the stairs go all the way across. Great for new swimmers.

The kids rooms are on the third floor so if you two suites on the second and a great little beach house the grandparents enjoyed. The beach house slightly rustic and small but smart and fun. It was very enjoyable and wouldn't have traded it. Allowed for some privacy from all four of our kids too (newborn to seven).

We stayed at the house pretty much the whole time. The view is incredible. Previously I read reviews saying there were Mosquitos in the pond. That's just silly - it's salt water fed through the ocean and there's mangrove fish in it. The fountains don't turn on anymore but it's not needed. Wouldn've blocked the view. And the bridge is super cool. We rode the three bikes on the property and off. Took the kayaks out. Bought some $20 rods and caught fish off the jetty (we kept the rods). There are pool toys.

It's just a great place for a great time.

Gorgeous home + great location = fabulous vacation

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Markeysa for a get-a-way vacation with friends. We were pleased to find the house large, beautiful, clean and well located. The owner and property manager were responsive and, helpful in settling in. The backyard is lush with a view of their saltwater lagoon, the ocean, and a lovely lap pool. The guest house, tucked in the back is private and perfectly located to be separate from the house. Our 6 year old was delighted to see the sea turtle nest on the beach; our 2 year old traveler was delighted to have a pool to play in. We were delighted that the pool provided the 2 year old with a great diversion from the sea turtle nest! Well outfitted, this house has a kitchen set up for cooking, proximity to restaurants if you're not cooking, great porches, tons of big beach towels, very comfortable beds, a kayak and.... now, many great memories. We had a wonderful time. Thank you for making our vacation perfectly smooth and enjoyable!!!

Better than you can imagine

  • 5 of 5

I searched forever for the perfect location for my girlfriend, my brother, his wife and 6 month old. This place is much more beautiful than the pictures. Very clean. Excellent service. (air conditioning went out and after one phone call they fixed it 20 minutes later!) Plus its great flats fishing in your backyard! I have to thank the owners and their realtors for such a perfect experience. Don't pass this one up, trust me!
