Large Ocean View, Large Gardens, Quiet, Perfect Elevation, Fragrant
Drenched in sunlight and fifteen minutes from the beach, Mango Cottage is a Bali inspired retreat nestled on the slope of the now dormant volcano, Hualalai. The house has a large private yard filled with tropical plants, fragrant flowers, outdoor sitting areas and private hot tub. It is situated on a quiet single lane in a peaceful old neighborhood, complete with meandering turkeys and the wild parrots that occasionally visit the adjacent mango tree.
From the door of Mango Cottage to the crystal waters of Kua Bay is a 15-minute drive and another few minutes delivers you to the renowned beaches of the Kohala Coast. It’s just a quick 10-minute drive to Kailua-Kona where you will find supermarkets, a natural foods store, restaurants and other trappings of “Town.” There is much to explore from this central location and we are happy to share our life-long local knowledge.
Mango Cottage has been restored with new flooring, many windows, an efficient kitchen, and a lanai for relaxing outdoor living. Float in the hot tub and enjoy the Hawaiian starry night. The lush gardens surround the home and the feeling of separateness between outdoors and in is minimal. Mango Cottage is gated and private, offers WiFi, a dishwasher, and two flat screen TV's. A washer and dryer are available and in-house maid service is available upon request during your stay. The bedding and queen size mattress, including the additional single day bed in the living room, are high quality for a comfortable sleep amidst the tropical breezes and sounds of the distant water feature. Views from the house include the ocean and a park like setting, perfect to witness the green flash moment.
The concept of the space is to provide a totally serene indoor/outdoor experience with all the luxury of good, comfortable design mixed with Indonesian antiques and art. It is perfect for your Hawaiian vacation and to re-charge all of your senses… enjoy!

We have lived in Kona for thirty-five years and have called Hawaii our home! Our property has been a labor of love and we are delighted to offer the cottage as a vacation rental. My husband and I are now retired and spend much of our time in the garden, creating jewelry, or traveling to California to visit our grandchildren.
Christine purchased this House in 1986
Why Christine chose Kalaoa
The cottage, which is privately situated on it's own 1/4 acre of tropical gardens, large lawn area, beautiful sunsets, water feature and hot tub to relax and watch the stars.
What makes this House unique
I take enormous joy in landscaping and gardening. I've planted many fragrant plants and trees along with fruit trees. The interior decorations and many of the garden statues are inspired by Indonesia. The property is very private, not your usual tourist flare! We are 8 minutes from the Kailua-Kona airport and 10 minutes to Kona town. If you drive 15 minutes in the other direction, you are at renowned beaches of the Kohala Coast 'Kua Bay'. We are close to everything and yet feel worlds away from it all.

This place was just incredible, I felt like I was staying in my own little piece of a botanical garden. The yard was my favorite part, it was so peaceful with all the birds, butterflies and beautiful flowers. The hot tub was awesome to relax in, and although we never used it there was a grill that would have been great to have a cookout with. The space is incredibly private feeling even though there are other houses around you. There is a deck overlooking the yard with a view all the way to the ocean that feels like an extension of the living space. I enjoyed having breakfast out there every morning with my kitty visitor. The house itself has everything you need for a great stay including lots of beach equipment. I wish I could have stayed longer, it is one of my favorite places I have ever rented!
Highly recommended place to stay
The place is very lovely. We will return.
Much Aloha Elena,
Thank you for staying at Mango Cottage, and hope to have you again. Mahalo's
Christine is a great host. She had the hot tub ready and house open and clean. Beautiful views. Lots of privacy. Our only regret is we didn’t stay longer.
A peaceful retreat.
Our stay in this wonderful cottage made our first (and not last) visit to The Big Island a memorable experience. Christine has a gift for hospitality. She communicated very well prior to our arrival. When we arrived, there were surprising delights around every corner of this spotless, Bali-inspired retreat. Fresh fruit and snacks on the kitchen counter, fresh flowers in every room, delightful decorating, a stocked pantry of spices and condiments, water sports equipment and coolers - the list goes on and on! I really appreciated that we had total privacy and Christine was attentive but never intrusive. The only glitch was that the wifi signal was weak and connectivity was spotty at times. But we weren't there to stayed glued to our devices so this wasn't a problem for us!
Mango Cottage: Our new favorite place in the Hawaiian Islands!
From the moment that we arrived at the Mango Cottage, we knew that our stay here would be a special experience. The cottage is located uphill, in the middle of a quiet residential neighborhood of nice homes on large lots. We found the grounds to be very pleasant - nice lawn areas with tropical plants, lots of flowering shrubs and trees including Orange and Papaya. From the covered porch, you have an expansive view of the ocean to the west.
Upon entering the cottage, we were welcomed by soft Hawaiian music on the radio, a bottle of wine and other drinks in the refrigerator, and a bowl of tropical fruit...and the artistically appointed living spaces made us feel right at home! We were pleasantly surprised to find the refrigerator and cabinets to be well stocked with all the kitchenware and "extras" (seasonings, soy sauce, oil, vinegar, etc.) that one needs to prepare meals at the cottage (and with the great view and fine Weber BBQ, why would anyone want to drive into town for dinner)? Note that the Costco is right on the route between the Kona Airport and the Cottage, for your grocery needs.
As noted in the property's description and by other guests, Christine and Bobby have done an outstanding job of providing all the beach gear that you might need: coolers, folding chairs, towels, boogie boards, snorkel gear, etc. Having a full size washer and dryer there is a real plus, too. And we particularly enjoyed the daily visits by Kolo the cat...a real sweetie!
We are timeshare owners on both Maui and Kauai, but we can honestly say that if we were to relocate from Seattle to the Islands, we would seek out a home just like the Mango Cottage. With its hillside setting well above sea level, the day and nighttime temperatures are very comfortable and even, there is no traffic noise, no aircraft noise, privacy is excellent, and the local town and beach areas are only about 10-15 minutes away (and there are NO roosters crowing at 3 am, unlike one encounters on Kauai).
Christine and Bobby: Thank You for making this peaceful place so inviting to your visitors; we look forward to returning here!

Mango cottage is a beautiful, private property up country above Kona with all the amenities one needs to enjoy downtime while visiting Hawai'i. Close to everything but private and secluded, it offers a wonderful getaway for a couple away from the traditional tourist enclaves. The only problem one might have is actually leaving each day to go out and do things as the cottage and property provide all that's necessary to relax and enjoy the west side away from the daily hustle and bustle of Kailua-Kona, which is pretty mellow anyway. When we did leave, there was plenty of beach equipment to make your beach visit memorable including masks, snorkels, and fins for snorkeling the numerous reefs, beach towels, umbrellas, coolers, boogie boards, ect. We had a wonderful stay which was waaay too short and will certainly visit again. Mahalo C and T
Thank you so much Bruce for a lovely review...It was a pleasure to have you both!
We look forward to seeing you again and I highly recommend any homeowners to have you as their guest! Much happiness, christine
We are a short drive from wonderful beaches, hikes, snorkeling, surfing, golf courses, and shopping. Take a short walk on Kohanaiki road to 'Zen Retreat' for facial treatments with appointment.
