Drenched in sunlight and fifteen minutes from the beach, Mango Cottage is a Bali inspired retreat nestled on the slope of the now dormant volcano, Hualalai. The house has a large private yard filled with tropical plants, fragrant flowers, outdoor sitting areas and private hot tub. It is situated on a quiet single lane in a peaceful old neighborhood, complete with meandering turkeys and the wild parrots that occasionally visit the adjacent mango tree.
From the door of Mango Cottage to the crystal waters of Kua Bay is a 15-minute drive and another few minutes delivers you to the renowned beaches of the Kohala Coast. It’s just a quick 10-minute drive to Kailua-Kona where you will find supermarkets, a natural foods store, restaurants and other trappings of “Town.” There is much to explore from this central location and we are happy to share our life-long local knowledge.
Mango Cottage has been restored with new flooring, many windows, an efficient kitchen, and a lanai for relaxing outdoor living. Float in the hot tub and enjoy the Hawaiian starry night. The lush gardens surround the home and the feeling of separateness between outdoors and in is minimal. Mango Cottage is gated and private, offers WiFi, a dishwasher, and two flat screen TV's. A washer and dryer are available and in-house maid service is available upon request during your stay. The bedding and queen size mattress, including the additional single day bed in the living room, are high quality for a comfortable sleep amidst the tropical breezes and sounds of the distant water feature. Views from the house include the ocean and a park like setting, perfect to witness the green flash moment.
The concept of the space is to provide a totally serene indoor/outdoor experience with all the luxury of good, comfortable design mixed with Indonesian antiques and art. It is perfect for your Hawaiian vacation and to re-charge all of your senses… enjoy!

We have lived in Kona for thirty-five years and have called Hawaii our home! Our property has been a labor of love and we are delighted to offer the cottage as a vacation rental. My husband and I are now retired and spend much of our time in the garden, creating jewelry, or traveling to California to visit our grandchildren.
Christine purchased this house in 1986
The cottage, which is privately situated on it's own 1/4 acre of tropical gardens, large lawn area, beautiful sunsets, water feature and hot tub to relax and watch the stars.
I take enormous joy in landscaping and gardening. I've planted many fragrant plants and trees along with fruit trees. The interior decorations and many of the garden statues are inspired by Indonesia. The property is very private, not your usual tourist flare!
We are 8 minutes from the Kailua-Kona airport and 10 minutes to Kona town. If you drive 15 minutes in the other direction, you are at renowned beaches of the Kohala Coast 'Kua Bay'. We are close to everything and yet feel worlds away from it all.
My husband and I stayed 3 nights here and enjoyed every minute of our stay. When we arrived Christine had waiting for us a bottle of wine on the lanai, a lit candle, fresh flowers, Hawaiian music playing and a bowl of fresh fruit! Everything was amazing including the ocean view and fresh water hot tub. We will be back soon!
We had a great time at Mango Cottage. Everything was perfect. There is not one thing I would change about this rental. It was beautiful inside and out.
Relaxing garden with green lawn, fruit trees, plants, flowers, and multiple sitting areas. BBQ area, spa, and lanai were all clean and ready for use. We watched the sunset from the lanai every night, it was gorgeous.
The location is a short drive to Kona Town, beaches, and food. This location is also convenient for day trips and sight seeing on this side of the island.
The bed was comfy, bathroom was spacious, and there were ceiling fans in every room. We stayed here mid July and the cottage was always a nice temp.
If you are headed out to the beach take advantage of all the beach supplies stored under the cottage. Chairs, ice chests, umbrella, boogie boards, noodles, fins, masks, and even a small pop up sun shade. All clean and organized nicely. There are beach towels upstairs in the house as well.
The hosts Bob and Christine were so nice. They have a great eye for landscaping and interior design. Everything from arrival instructions, check in, and check out was a breeze. Bob greeted us with a smile and inside the cottage there was some cold beer in the fridge and some fresh bananas and avocados in the fruit bowl.
I can't say enough nice things about this place. We have been telling everyone who will listen to us how awesome Mango Cottage is. We hope to return soon with our son and stay here again.
Thanks again Bob and Christine!!
Mango cottage offers an ideal retreat destination, not just a place to stay while visiting the Big Island. The spacious and beautifully maintained garden, with hot tub and private lawn area, includes an extraordinary variety of plantings that bloom year-round. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable and appealing in terms of the interior decor, layout, natural lighting, furnishings, kitchen appliances, bedding and bathroom provisions. We appreciated finding a variety of well-chosen beach equipment - towels, water shoes, snorkeling gear, folding chairs, etc. All of that is stored in a spacious and well-organized area under the porch, along with a washer and dryer. Drive time to downtown Kailua-Kona and Kona Airport is modest, about fifteen minutes to both areas, and well worth the trip, certainly much better - for those wanting relaxation time - than staying in the busy congestion of condos and hotels by the sea. As presented by the owners, Mango Cottage has a Buddhist ambience, inside and out, that would make it ideal for writing a book, renewing a marriage, or resting from a major project. Maybe the owner's commitment to rest and relaxation explains the complete lack of any beverages with caffeine (ie tea or coffee) in the other-wise well-stocked kitchen. That minor deficiency is my only criticism. Mango Cottage was so delightful that we drove away with high hopes of making a return visit. We will recommend it to all our friends.
What an amazing place! The ohana and the grounds are BEAUTIFUL and the location felt secluded and yet we were still close to everything we wanted to do while on the island. The welcome with local beer in the fridge, Hawaiian music on the radio and excellent coffee and fruit for breakfast the next day made us feel right at home, and I loved that the owners left us alone but responded quickly if we needed anything. There are ceiling fans in every room and with the mountain elevation it was comfortable for us even in the hottest month of the year. We really enjoyed watching the gorgeous sunsets from the terrace. The whole experience was so care-free and we could have stayed much longer. A true piece of paradise.
Mango Cottage was the perfect retreat. It was very private and relaxing but close to everything. It is exactly as the owners have described and more. They have supplied everything you need to make this a home away from home including the use of beach equipment. The yard is so beautiful and the view of the ocean enchanting. The elevation of the neighborhood is great as the weather is a little cooler and inviting after a day at the beach. It also makes it nice for the hot tub and you will see the stars so clear at night. The neighbors were very friendly when passing them on our long, quiet daily walks. You will be much happier staying here than in a resort, it is beautiful!
We enjoyed calling Mango Cottage “home” during the second half of our recent visit to the Big Island.
Past reviews don’t lie: Mango Cottage – and its owners – are a real gem. Christine was a joy to work with from the start. She warmly greeted us upon arrival. With peaceful Hawaiian music playing on the radio, plumeria blossoms throughout the house, wine chilling in the refrigerator and fresh oranges and papaya in the kitchen – we felt greatly welcomed.
Surrounded by beautiful landscaping and gate at the front of the driveway, Mango Cottage is private. We found the neighborhood quiet and the hillside location gave expansive view of the coastline below. The house was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and we had no trouble preparing meals. We were thankful to have use of a BBQ and washer/dryer. Had we of forgotten snorkeling gear there was plenty available. The hot tub was enjoyed after days of exploration.
I appreciated Christine’s attention to detail both in and outside of the home. Outside, I smiled more than once happening upon hidden treasures tucked here and there among the landscape. Christine’s green thumb shows in all areas of the yard and floral smells waft into the home day and night.
The location of Mango Cottage was ideal for exploring many west-side island locations. Kailua-Kona is only a short drive away. We ventured north to the Pololu Valley Lookout after visiting the charming towns of Waimea and Hawi. We explored several beaches and enjoyed sunset from A Bay on more than one evening. With family also on-island, we traveled south for the Thanksgiving holiday – first to South Point (windy and beautiful) and then on to Sea Mountain where family had rented a condo. Punalu’u Beach was a good place to sink your feet into black sand while watching sea turtles rest on shore. Though there were several options for snorkeling, we enjoyed return visits to Kahalu’u and Ho’okena Beach Parks. We opted for the short – but steep – hike down to Kealakekua Bay and Captain Cook Monument where we snorkeled for hours and saw both spinner and bottlenose dolphins from afar. As all the guidebooks advise, Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park is not to be missed.
The Big Island is a special place. There is a great deal to explore and the beauty is vast and varied. Our time at Mango Cottage allowed us to settle in and make the most of our visit on the island, while giving us opportunity to create cherished memories.
We are a short drive from wonderful beaches, hikes, snorkeling, surfing, golf courses, and shopping. Take a short walk on Kohanaiki road to 'Zen Retreat' for facial treatments with appointment.
