An Inspiring Setting

  • 5 of 5

I cannot count the years or the seasons that I have spent in this house, but I do remember the first time I turned off Highway 31 into the lovely village of Norwood and drove on the road that paralleled Lake Michigan. The beauty of the lake, of the beach, of the trees, of the expanse of sky has never failed to make me gasp at the wonder of it all.

The house—we call it by the generic name of Norwood—is starkly beautiful. It was built as a testimony to the surroundings of woods and lake. There is no room from which you cannot see—and hear—the lake, its crashing, its muttering, its gentle rolling. A choice has been made here: to live as closely as possible to the natural elements.

I love the house, so much so that it is the single scene of a novel I wrote a few years ago. I am a Michigan writer and a life-long resident of Michigan. It is my belief that a writer has to know a place as well as he/she knows the characters. The best parts of that novel—a woman involved in scandal and taking refuge in winter on Lake Michigan—are testimonies to the serenity and the marvel of each season on the lake. The house itself is a character in this story. The revelations could not occur in any other place where what is natural and beautiful account for what is unique and wonderful about the house in Norwood.

Best Vacation Ever

Best Vacation Ever!

My family spent the best week in

Norwood. The house we rented

was so beautifully appointed, gracious

and welcoming, we could have stayed

forever.

The home has a very large living space

that is open and full of light with windows

that all look out on Lake Michigan. The master bedroom

on the main floor was a plus while our children

enjoyed their bedrooms and reading area. And we all enjoyed

walking on the beach.

Outdoor grill! Absolutely heaven.

We loved cooking in the kitchen and enjoyed

Less Than Expected~

  • 1 of 5

We stayed in this house the first week of August this past summer and were disappointed with the entire experience.

It started with finding out that this house is not in Charlevoix; it's in a tiny but unremarkable hamlet called "Norwood" that is a good 20 minutes drive from Charlevoix. There are no services except in Charlevoix, so we spent a lot of time driving back and forth. The rental agency forgot to drop off a pack-n-play for our baby, so we had to drive 2 hours to find a Walmart (The Venetian Festival was that night and the Charlevoix bridge was closed - this is small town America) and buy one ourselves. Next, it turns out that there is no "sand beach", but there's a lot of rock beach! Don't be fooled by the pictures. That little patch of sand does exist, but it's not near the water. Also, there are MANY bugs! You often won't want to sit out there because of the bugs.

The interior of the "luxury" house is very dated. The master shower is plastic, not tile, the bed is comfortable but the pillows are cheap Walmart $10 pillows that are 15 years old, for example. The washing machine leaked and we told the company about this but they did nothing about it. The water is well water and you need to buy gigantic bottles of water to drink for the week, and showering feels gross. Worst of all, there are NO window treatments in the whole house!!! So if you are like us, and enjoy sleeping in on summer vacation, you'll be up with the sunrise.

To her credit, the owner did try to contact us about this once we were home but we were unable to reach her again. She seemed sincerely sorry we weren't having a good time.

On the plus side, the rocky beaches make it easy to find Petoskey stones.

In a nutshell, for the huge rent we paid for this week we expected a LOT more. We live in CA and can go to Maui for LESS than this and stay in a brand new luxury condo on the ocean for less than this, in Wailea!

Owner's Response: I was quite surprised when I read the review of our home, as anyone who has used it in the past has had a most enjoyable vacation The home was built and is used by the owners. The architect was Jack Begrow and the interior designer was Tim Fisher. Both are well known for their talent and professionalism not only in Northern Michigan but throughout the country and beyond. Each and every detail was chosen with loving care. The home is 15 minutes from Charlevoix, as noted in the description, and one hour from Traverse City, in the charming village of Norwood. All three are nestled along the shore of Lake Michigan. The beach itself is both rocky and sandy and our grandchildren have spent many happy days in the water and on the beach. The coastline is always changing, after all it is Lake Michigan the second most beautiful of the Great Lakes. That is what makes this spot so special. You are truly paying homage to the beauty of nature. Northern Michigan is a hidden jewel. Whereas it is true that the windows are uncovered, that is because every room has a view of the lake which is more beautiful than a painting. It is totally private. No one can peek in the windows. The interior of the house is furnished as is appropriate for a special lake house with quiet, elegant taste. There are wood floors and tile counters. The kitchen is equipped with all appliances and everything needed to beautifully entertain. Pictures do not lie and there are many more available. Unfortunately these renters had an unusually bad weather week, sufficient enough to put them in a bad mood. We have no control over mother nature. My husband and I are both well educated and travelled, therefore we are able to appreciate the beauty of our home and of Northern Michigan. Please contact owners for any further questions.
