This newly renovated cottage is located atop a hill overlooking the Wild and Scenic Westfield River surrounded by state forest and protected land. Wildlife abounds and we are a birder's haven. Many a morning you can watch mist arising from the river. Walk out the door to hike, mountain bike, snowshoe, or ski in the woods. Groomed cross country skis are nearby. We are located midway between The Berkshires with its many cultural activities and the Pioneer Valley, home to the five colleges: U Mass, and Smith, Amherst, Mt Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges. The cottage sleeps four (1 BR for 2, 2 built-in twins by the wood stove). The kitchen is fully equipped. The owner lives on the property in the main home near to the cottage.
I am currently a retired physician now able to devote full time to our 50 acres of managed woodlands and grounds.
John Follet purchased this cottage in 1998
The Cottage is a part of the property. We have here lived in Western Massachusetts on and off for 20 years beginning in 1975. We have no plans to be anywhere else.
This is a very special place
I'll add my voice to the chorus of cheers. Lovely place. Lovely people. Very quiet and peaceful.
This was our first visit to New England, timed to see the famous autumn colours. At home in the UK we live in the countryside, and don't like towns very much! The Clearing was perfect for us - wonderfully peaceful and isolated yet within easy driving of some of the region's wonderful sites. Nothing was more than an hour away. Going west on the Mohawk Trail the colours just got better and better, and we enjoyed diving off on to even smaller quiet roads. We walked some forest trails, and took John's advice to visit Mount Graylock on our last day ( nice and quiet on a Friday - don't do it at the weekend unless you want to spend time waiting in traffic to get a parking space!).
The accommodation is lovely, a real home from home. It's really well designed, and everything works. John has obviously given a lot of thought to the needs of his guests. We were blessed with wonderful warm sunny days, but chilly evenings meant we could feel justified in lighting the log fire and feeling really cosy!
A great place to stay, thank you John and Joyce.
We feel so lucky having spent our 30th anniversary in the relaxed, woodsy atmosphere of this wonderful, well appointed cottage, located halfway between Edith Wharton's house, The Mount, in Lenox, and Emily Dickinson's home museum in Amherst. John is a friendly, low-key host who supplied us with details of the area and the trails in his woods, as well as helpful instructions for the wood stove. The cottage is older but the renovations make it fresh and convenient. Also, we noted how much care was taken in beautiful details like the wrought iron strap hinges, hooks, knobs and lighting fixtures. We enjoyed the cubbies in the living room that were well-lit for reading. The kitchen, also well-lit, made it possible for us to take advantage of the Old Creamery's fabulous selection of food and baked goods. We didn't eat out once, but could spend our evenings cozy by the wood stove. Our privacy was undisturbed except for the wild turkeys who came to visit... ! We are hoping to pay another visit to experience the Clearing at another season.
We were looking for a quiet late-summer get-away and are very happy that we found this lovely spot. John and Joyce welcomed us warmly, and showed us around.
We chose the area because of its centrality to the attractions of Berkshire county (Williamstown, North Adams and Lenox) as well as the Pioneer Valley (Northampton and Deerfield.) and were not disappointed. We spent a day or an evening in each place, enjoying very good restaurants along with the cultural destinations.
Everything is as it is presented in the photos. The cottage looks over a beautiful swimming pool and the valley and hills beyond. It has been entirely and carefully remodeled inside with attention to every detail. Our favorite room was the screened porch - for coffee in the morning, lunch at the table for 2, or evenings appreciating the moon and stars. When we come back in cooler weather, as I hope we will, the sitting room and wood stove will no doubt take center stage.
John and Joyce gave us plenty of space to enjoy the cottage and were available when needed for local recommendations and recreation suggestions. We look forward to a return visit.
Our three night stay could not have been nicer. The cottage is very comfortable and well-equipped throughout, from kitchen to bath to furnishings. The property and surrounding area is beautiful. The Creamery Co-op was close-by and great for food and sundries. We appreciated the collection of trail maps for many of the nearby state parks and forests. We thank our hosts for their thoughtful and generous hospitality.
This homeaway was everything we needed while going back and forth to a wedding in Goshen. Our whole family (6 adults) were able to stay comfortably, cook on the grill, enjoy the pool, make a big breakfast and spend time playing games on the porch, The home and property were so well kept and beautiful. Our hosts were helpful and pleasant. We truly were so pleased with this experience, we would highly recommend this property without any reservation. Several of the other wedding guests stayed at hotels in North Hampton, but we, by far, had the best quality experience at a better price! And we even had the opportunity to watch an incredible lightning show from the porch.
