I am a cougar working at UW Dental school. We had an occasion to spend a few days on Guemes island with friends. We all fell in love with it. We decided to buy a vacation house together on the island and we did in a few months. It is an awesome decide we've ever made!
Owner purchased this House in 2010

Lovely and warm place to enjoy extended family time.
The home is warm and cozy, with lots of room for visiting and having big dinners. The surrounding island is beautiful for walks even in mid-winter. This home will become part of our family traditions!
A fabulous place for a getaway!
Our group enjoyed a fabulous stay at this place last weekend. We will come back again and definitely recommend to my friends! Also, very much appreciate the host's responsive and responsible attitude which made our stay no hassle at all!
Plenty of room to spare with three couples. I think we could have easily had gaggle of kids too!
Space is large and clean. A perfect home base for roaming the island. Easily accommodates several families. Host had easy instructions and made the whole stay a pleasant experience. Will use this property again if it is available when we return.
Not what it appears.
The photos are not quite what we found. The property is overgrown and the house has a very vacant feeling to it. I'm not sure if it has changed hands recently, but the previous reviews don't seem to reflect what we found. It's important to note that there is no wifi, cell phone reception was very spotty, and you'll be required to carry away your own garbage and recycling. The house smells like Chinese food, and it lacked a lot of the things I've come to expect in rentals-- a bar of soap in the bathrooms for example. It also has a strange setup upstairs with two empty bedrooms. Now, having said this, the manager was very easy to deal with and the house was clean. It could be a good option for a large group on the cheap, provided you bring extra beds. Overall, I would not stay here again, and it seems that the owners have done the minimum required to keep this listing up.
I am very sorry about Eric's bad feeling about my house. I appreciate Eric's constructive comments. I won't say too much to defend myself. Just a few things to clarify.
1. The person we hired this year to mow our lawn did a sloppy job. I apologize for that. We will hire someone else next year.
2. I owned the house since 2010. You can check this info in "Owner Info" section in the posting. I constantly put money in the house for maintenance and all kinds improvement. I just built a new deck for the small house next to it in September.
3. The two empty attics are described as "Finished attics" in the posting. No beds, no bedding sets, only for extra people to sleep with their sleeping bags.
4. Wifi is not listed in the posting. Cell phone reception is beyond my control.
Peaceful vacation stay
We were on Guemes for a family reunion and this was one of the 3 homes we rented. What a peaceful setting and a beautiful home! Plenty of space to accommodate all of us for evening meals a couple nights. We enjoyed the home and the island beauty very much!
Relaxing weekend away with friends
I decided to gather 9 of my closest friends for a weekend getaway just outside the city. Heading up to Guemes island was a mixture of fun adventure and relaxing getaway. We were able to enjoy our time and below I'll provide the pros/cons and my tips for future vacationers.
The ferry was short, cheap, and travels across often. There was practically no noise, traffic, or other people around at all during our stay, the house is completely surrounded and feels very private. The house was very spacious and provided exactly what we needed for a short weekend away, including some board games and the garage entertainment (pool/ping pong) was greatly appreciated. The back deck is very spacious and it was very easy to accommodate everyone for relaxing and chatting in a large circle. The yard is also very spacious and can easily have multiple people running around at once.
Cons: (Most of these cons were a result of me and not the house)
There are only a few outdoor chairs, so bring some if you like to lounge. The ferry can only hold 20-22 cars at a time so get there a little early otherwise you may have to wait. There was no outdoor fire pit, which would have been really fun but again there was never one promised so I can't be upset about not having one. The propane tank was empty but we filled it at the local store and the home-owner reimbursed us, yay!
Do your research on the ferry schedule and get there 20-25 minutes early. Pack plenty of chairs and everything you'll need to enjoy they weekend (outdoor games, drinks, water, etc...). If you can't find the ping pong paddles look in the drawers by the garage sink... trust me... they are there! I recommend bringing flip flops or slippers since there is a lot of in and out of the back patio (lazy pro-tip). Bring fancy cooking utensils, the basics are there.
The house was amazing and we had a great time, enjoy yourself and do the 1.1 mile Guemes Mountain hike, it was beautiful.
Guemes island, which is part of San Juan Islands, is the best place for crabbing and agate hunting in the nation. Please visit our website for more information about activities.
