About Aruna and Barbara Jacobi

My mother and I have created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals in 2008 with two of our properties in order to create accommodation for the many visitors to the area which was very much needed. We lived in Seattle for many years before running a popular restaurant ( Sisters European Snacks) with my two sisters in the famous Pike Place Market for 10 years. After much traveling, we fell in love with this area and the powerful nature all around. My mother especially felt drawn to the magic of the Painted Hills. We now live on a 33 acre each about 7 miles behind the Painted Hills with a view of the John Day River. It's really out in the Boondocks here and we drive every day the 15 miles to Mitchell to take care of our guests, cottages and gardens.

Aruna and Barbara Jacobi purchased this house in 2014

Why Aruna and Barbara Jacobi chose Eastern Oregon

The Sunset Cottage is the newest addition to the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals and buying the property was a logical move since it's right across the street from the other 2 cottages.

What makes this house unique

The house sits on a rim overlooking the town of Mitchell and a beautiful Rock formation called Bailey Rock. The sunsets are spectacular from up here and the old plum and apricot trees are charming.

The house is cool all day but there is also AC if needed. There are 3 cozy bedrooms, 2 remodeled bathrooms (one with the original clubfoot tub) and a large kitchen with all the animates needed to whip up a great meal. The cottage is spacious and clean with the feel of the old country homes of the 50's. there is a laundry room with washer and dryer too.

Beautiful view, comfortable beds, nestled in one of the most beautiful parts of Oregon

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms were stocked with organic natural products, the kitchen had all the appliances, condiments, etc one could want, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. My kids enjoyed the box of toys and we all loved watching sunset and meteor showers from the deck. Great place to explore the John Day fossil beds and incredibly close to the Painted Hills.

Good Family Time in the Painted Hills!

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I treated our parents to a Father's Day weekend in Mitchell. The Sunset Cottage was a perfect base for our Painted Hills mini vacation. Mitchell is a very small town and the cottage was easy to find. The wood stove was perfect to take the chill off during our first rainy day there. The sun came out for our second day and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the back deck with wine and music. We came prepared with plenty of food as we knew that grocery stores were limited in the area, however, we did make daily trips to the small store in Mitchell and appreciated the friendliness of everyone we encountered.

We would not hesitate to return to the Sunset Cottage in the future.

A great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our Paint Hills vacation was wonderful. The area is beautiful and full of places to explore. We wish could have had more time to visit all the interesting hikes and sights. Photographs do not do the Painted Hills justice, must be seen to fully appreciate.

Our vacation rental in Mitchell was as advertised and more. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen nicely equipped. The fresh eggs were delicious. Our family was very comfortable there. Thank you so much for the hospitality. The neighbors too, were kind and friendly to us. We highly recommend Painted Hills Vacation Rentals. We hope to stay there again.

Wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

Great time, very cozy, quaint, colorful cottage. Barbara and her daughter were so responsive, even had farm fresh eggs for us in the fridge. The gardens and houses are so cute. The Painted Hills and Smith Rock are absolutely beautiful! We also drove to Cathedral Rock and did the loop. The kids loved it. The only tip would be to maybe have blackout curtains as it gets very bright (and beautiful) in the am.

Adorable Cottage, Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

If you want to visit the Painted Hills/John Day Fossil Beds, I highly recommend the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals ( There are 3 rentals in the quaint town of Mitchell, OR. We chose the Sunset Cottage. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by deer and turkeys in the front yard. The area is teeming with wildlife. It's clear that the owner's take great pride in these units. There were books, board games, and a DVD library. We felt right at home during our visit. Mitchell is a very small town, population 126. There is one gas station and the hours are somewhat irregular, so make sure you plan accordingly. Everyone we met was extremely friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful getaway and we can't wait to return.

Excellent Place to stay and relax

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage, recently updated with all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. Beds were great! The scenery around Mitchell is breathtaking and the hiking is abundant. We saw lots of wildlife and found many things to do. Restaurants in Mitchell close early so it's best to plan ahead and get groceries so you can cook your own dinners at least. There is a smoker and BBQ available along with great kitchen supplies. We will definitely be going back.

80 Miles
Car: necessary

The famous Painted Hills, one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon and one of the 3 units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument are only 9 miles away, about 12 minutes by car. Another one of the 7 Wonders, Smith Rock, is about 1.5 hours away by car. The 2 other units of the National Monument, Sheep Rock and Clarno, are easily reachable on the scenic Byway "Journey through Time". It's an hour to the Thomas Condon Paleontology Museum (at the Sheep Rock unit) which is a must see for anyone fascinated with ancient history. The Cant Museum is across the street and offers a glimpse into pioneer life of the region.

The Scenic Byeways and Bikeways offer fantastic views around every corner of the road with sweeping landscapes, giant Buttes, and rugged rock formations of all sizes and shapes. The wild and untamed John Day River can be accessed for fishing, boating and swimming at various spots. The region is a paradise for hikers, bird watchers, outdoor sportsmen, landscape photographers, artists and stargazers
