Our waterfront comfortable, mostly remodeled home is family-friendly and available to guests. It's a ranch style house built in 1960 and situated in a family neighborhood in which many homes are vacation/second homes. Most rooms offer a beautiful view of lake. This relaxing, comfortable home sleeps eight+ (5 traditional beds, two sofa sleepers, a queen-size hanging/swing bed). Features include a spacious screened in porch with lots of comfortable seating for large gatherings and a swing bed,. There's a large multilevel deck which leads to a wooden staircase and on to the lakefront, where the fishing is at its best! We have two fire pits available for bonfires and marshmallow roasting. If you're coming to tournament fish, this home is ideal for both tournament participants as well as their family members who may observe the action on Pickwick Lake from the decks or screened porch.
We also have a private pier with boat mooring that may accommodate your boat docking needs. Water levels and conditions fluctuate, so inquire about current conditions if water activities are in your plans. Feel free to bring paddle boards, jet skis, canoes, boats and other water toys.
Our Pickwick Lake home is located just five miles west of the quaint Norman Rockwell-ish town of Tuscumbia, recently ranked among the top ten most charming small towns in Alabama. It's about an hour west of Huntsville/Madison County on one of the most peaceful and lovely sections of the Tennessee River. Pride Landing launch ramp is located about five miles west of the home by land, about 5 minutes by boat. Florence Marina/McFarland Park is about 23 minutes away by road, 15 minutes by boat. Local fishing on Pickwick, Wilson and Wheeler Lakes is easily accessible. We can recommend fishing guides, as well
Local attractions include the popular Rattlesnake Saloon, a restaurant in a cave, (recently featured on Food Network), Ivy Green (the birthplace of Helen Keller) and Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve (featuring "The Most Spectacular View in Alabama," according to Backpacker Magazine), two Robert Trent Jones Golf Courses about 15 miles away, and the University of North Alabama in nearby Florence, Willows Day Spa about 5 miles away in Tuscumbia, and many others.
The fourth generation of our family is now enjoying our home and we would love to share it with you. The water is beautiful all times of year, although water levels at our pier and conditions do fluctuate seasonally. The serene, lovely location make this home perfect for a get away. We (property owners Tim and Judy Hendrix Kirchner) grew up in this area and we were fortunate to be able to keep this home in the family when Judy's mom decided to sell and move into town. We both graduated from the University of North Alabama in nearby Florence; Judy was a teacher for many years and Tim went on to the University of Alabama, Huntsville, Engineering School, earning a degree in electrical engineering. We lived for almost 20 years in the Marshall Islands on the island of Kwajalein, and now we split our time between Huntsville, where Tim continues to work in missile defense, and our lake house on Locust Shores, where Judy loves fulfilling her dream of owning a bed and breakfast. We have two grown children. Julianne is a nurse married to a Naval officer, Michael, and lives in DC. Graham is a graduate of the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and plans to attend medical school. He recently married his sweetheart, Katrina, a nurse, and plans to attend medical school and eventually hopes to become a missionary physician.
Judy purchased this house in 1991
For going on six decades this home on Pickwick Lake has been in our family. Judy and her sisters were raised in this home; we were blessed to be able to keep it in our family to be loved by our fourth generation. It has been our gathering place for over half a century because we love the beautiful, restful atmosphere the home has to offer. It's an older, comfortable, happy place for friends and family to gather to enjoy water activities, play games, watch waterfowl, fish, read, or to just relax.
Great for tournament fishing participants! Directly located on Pickwick Lake, part of the Tennessee River, this area is known for great fishing year round. Located just 10 minutes from Pride Landing Launch Ramp, and only 13 miles, (about 20 minutes by car, seven miles by water) from Florence Marina/McFarland Park. There's plenty of boat parking in our double driveway. Fishing from our private pier is another option, or guests may use our canoe for fishing or just relaxing on beautiful Pickwick Lake. Ask about lake conditions if water activities are part of your plans. Great for family members and friends of fishing tournament participants as you may watch the action from the screened porch or decks!
Four of us -- all 73 year old males who have been friends for 55 years -- spent two nights at this property on Lake Pickwick. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. The house is rustic -- some might say "funky" -- and that is what we loved about it. (It's also the reason for my review title --- the place really took us back in time to vacations spent on lakes without the burden of modernity!!) There was ample space, well arranged (although I'm not sure why the faucets for the shower in the master bedroom are at ankle rather than chest height!). Beds were comfortable. Unfortunately, Lake Pickwick was at a very low level due to drought so we weren't able to "fish off the dock". The hostess, Judy, was wonderful. She epitomized Southern hospitality. Turns out that one of our party had spent time in the South Pacific, so there was lots of conversation about Kwadjalene and other remote islands! Judy brought us wonderful muffins, and gave us great dining tips. Unless you have a need to a "modern" house, this property would be an excellent choice for spending a few days in the Tuscumbia/Muscle Shoals/Sheffield area.
My second trip, this time with my two daughters and two nieces. Could not have been better. The comment one evening on the porch, agreed to by all, was that it was a "magical time". Everyone first comment after be in the house for only moments, was that it felt like home. We invited Judy, the owner, to visit with us Sunday evening. What a joy. One of the most upbeat, positive folks you could ever hope to meet. I was sad that the hummingbirds had moved on for the winter but there is always next year. By the way, Judy makes fabulous
muffins, they were parceled out very carefully to be certain they were evenly shared!!!
We enjoyed our stay at the lake front home. The home is exactly as shown in the pictures, spacious, charming and clean. The furnishings are comfortable and the home is tastefully decorated. From the screened in porch we watched boats and barges move up and down the lake. Upon our arrival, there were some vases of fresh cut flowers in the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom as well as some freshly baked pumpkin chocolate chip mini muffins. We would most definitely stay again.
This wonderful cottage on Lake Pickwick/Tennessee River is just as described and even better! The decor is tasteful and inviting, everything is incredibly clean, the layout is very nice and practical, and the screened-in back porch featured in the images is incredibly nice, with ample seating, a great view and yes, an entire swinging bed! The three bedrooms can easily accommodate three couples, if needed. The surrounding neighborhood is extremely quiet, at day and at night. This is the absolutely perfect quiet retreat by the water and it feels like coming home (although our house is very rarely that clean!). And yes, Judy's pumpkin chocolate chip muffins are as delicious as reported by others! The water level was a little low when we visited, but it didn't matter. The area has lots of things to do if you love nature, water and nice people. The Florence Marina is within about 20 minutes of driving. We rented a boat for one day and went up and down the river, which is beautiful. Cane Creek Canyon Reserve is also about 20 minutes away. This is a privately owned hiking area. The owners are incredible people, who went to the trouble of marking hiking trails and providing trail maps, resting points with cold water and toilets and a warm welcome as you come in, all free of charge. The trails are not too difficult, but reward you with spectacular views of the canyon, rock formations, a water fall and a cave. Spring Park, about 10 minutes away from the cottage, is a really nice city park, with "world's largest man-made water fall", a lake full of geese, ducks and swans (our little boy loved feeding them), a nice playground, a small train and an old-fashioned carousel (also really appreciated by our son). And then, about 20-25 minutes away, is the Rattle Snake Saloon, which is a must-visit. While it's not exactly a gourmet experience, the very unique setting and friendly and fast service make up for that! For classic, well-cooked, delicious breakfast food, served by really sweet people, we liked the Old Rocking Chair restaurant, which is close by, on highway 72. We hope to come back to this area, and when we do, we will be sure to give Judy a call!
Had a woderful weekend relaxing. Good food in Florence. Toured the Frank Lloyd Wright home.
Spend lots of time on the screened in porch, photographing hummingbirds. Will be back again
next month with my daughters.
