We had a very plaisant time in this charming cottage!
This was our second stay at the Mermaid cottage and it was all we remembered it to be. Very clean, tastefully decorated, quiet with very accommodating owners. We had a few questions before and during our stay and Tess was extremely responsive each time. It was great to bring along our dog Jake and enjoy the small fenced backyard with him. There were even dog dishes available for him. If you don't travel with pets, don't worry about pet odor - there is none! Bed is very comfortable and there were enough flubby bath towels for an army. Looking forward to a return visit!
Delightful and clean accommodations. Tess and Jim were so nice upon arrival. There was so much useful information left for the renter(s) especially if you are new to area. Having a dog, loved that the back yard was fenced in. Loved also having K cup coffee here. Great rental!
This was my second time staying at the Mermaid Cottage. We stayed here last year and had to come back because this cottage is so perfect! Everything you could need is already there for you, the decor is great and it is just a minute drive from multiple beaches. The owner Tess is awesome and makes sure your stay is amazing. If you are looking for a getaway in the York area book your stay here!!
I waited nearly a month and a half to write this, in hopes that I would speak with a little less emotion. This was easily the most frustrating experience I've ever had both in terms of the issues with the rental and the tone the owner took when I tried reaching out.
On our first night of the stay, a Wednesday, the toilet overflowed at 11pm. I cleaned up the mess and noticed there was fecal matter and other debris coming up from the shower drain. I immediately notified the owners and to their credit, the husband came first thing in the morning and didn't leave the property until a plumber was able to get there at 2pm, and he did stay afterwards to clean and disinfect the bathroom. The plumber of his choosing said the pipes were likely backed up for 5 weeks. Later that night, the hard wired smoke alarm sounded and beeped every 10 seconds indicating a low battery. I changed the batteries using the ones in the TV remote control that did not fix the situation. We had brand new batteries with us and tried those, to no avail. A Google search indicated the smoke alarm was old and needed to be replaced, so I contacted the owners again after this safety hazard and they did not fix this issue despite staying on the property for most of the weekend.
I ended up going to York Urgent Care Friday morning after having a fever of 104 the entire night Thursday with incredible chills and nausea, and they immediately told me to head to the ER at York Hospital. The nurses and the doctors at both facilities felt strongly that I had picked up bacteria from cleaning the bathroom Wednesday night after we discussed everything. I missed my sisters wedding and was in bed until Sunday evening, and the hospital called to say the bacteria found in their tests was consistent with contaminated water and they felt I had gotten it from cleaning the bathroom.
The owner, Jim Conroy, would not answer my phone calls. I asked for a full reimbursement of our stay there. He responded to my email with no apology or any sign of sympathy and demanded to know everything I ate for the week and the names and numbers of everyone I came in contact with. He threatened to bill my in laws for coming Friday to help my wife with our toddler and dog when I was in the hospital. He offered me a gift card to a restaurant 2 1/2 hours from my house and was offended I didn't take it. I'm limited by character restraints, but there are many places to stay in York - you can do better.
We had the most wonderful week. My husband, my dog Niki and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mermaid Cottage. The location was perfect, with all the comforts of home. Is this what retirement feels like?
We are certainly thinking about returning next year.
