Why Barbara Murphy chose Bayfield

John and Barb Murphy are no strangers to the north. John was actually born in Racine, Wisconsin and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Muskegon, Michigan. Barb was raised in northern Michigan on the east shore of Lake Charlevoix in the small town of Boyne City. Career opportunities led them both to Houston separately, where they eventually met, got married and raised a daughter. After 30 years in the big city, it was time to retire. Having spent the latter 10 years searching for the perfect place, and some 10 states later, they ended up in Bayfield on a whim in the summer of 2009. On the advice of a friend, they scouted an area south of Bayfield County. It was a beautiful place but something was missing. One of the locals there suggested visiting Bayfield; so, they packed for a day trip and headed north. Within the first few minutes of arriving they were definitely “Up North”; they knew this was the place: quaint shops; islands; friendly residents; and, of course, the big water - Lake Superior. It was like coming home. With sights set high, they headed back to Houston, sold their home and moved to Bayfield in August of 2010. Their new home and Carriage House Rental is situated on 10 beautifully wooded acres just one mile north of town.

What makes this cottage unique

We are located on 10 wooded acres with a 1/2 mile hike/jog trail that runs along the property with it's own creek. We have wildlife on our property including Black Bear, Bobcat, Deer, Coyote, Wolf, Raccoon, and Fox. Our Carriage house is equipped with all the comforts of home and if you need any special requests, we can have it for you in minutes. You will have a 600 sq ft heated garage where you can store your equipment instead of being one of the many unfortunate visitors that have to keep all their toys on or attached to the vehicles. We are next to the Apostle Islands which is controlled by the National Park Service. You will find Seacaves along the islands and mainland. Kayaking, canoeing and boating is a lifetime experience along the Islands. You can paddle to one of the 21 islands and hike or even camp in areas pristine with nature and solitude. Just keep bear wary!

After experiencing the thousands of acres of nature; walk, ride or drive one mile into town and shop at all the shops or eat at one of many restaurants while looking over Lake Superior and the islands. Want more culture?? Take in a show at the Big Top Chautauqua or at Stage North. You will see famous performers as well as our local artists. Don't forget the Bayfield Apple Festival or the Dog Sled Races or the Bayfield in Bloom or the Fall Harvest Celebration or the Blessing of the Fleet or 'whew!' Just too many things to see and do here in Bayfield. Check out our website for more info and pictures at superiorhorizons.

I found heaven on earth!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 nights Oct 2017 during the last few days of peak autumn color for a mini girls get away. First of all, if you've never been to Bayfield in October, it is spectacular! As I'm typing this review I'm longing to be back there.

The surroundings at the Carriage House do not disappoint! If you're looking to get away from the stress, noise and chaos of life, escape to the Carriage House. There's a hiking trail running through the property in the woods which is easy for novice hikers. We had our morning coffee from the front porch to enjoy the sights, sounds and smell of the autumn air in Northern WI. Leaves were gently cascading to the ground. It was peacefully beautiful beyond words! There was a basket of polished stones from Lake Superior sitting on a table on the porch with a note letting us know we were welcome to take a couple. I thought it was very kind and thoughtful and a nice little treat for rock collectors like me!

Having access to a full kitchen was convenient. We didn't do any cooking, mainly just heating of pre-made meals we brought in a cooler, but it made packing a lunch for our excursions around the area much easier and having a full kitchen will definitely save you money from eating out. The king size beds were comfortable and the place was impeccably clean. You definitely feel safe and secure here. We had no cell service with our mobile provider, so we were glad WIFI was available. WIFI wasn't slow or unresponsive like other motels I've stayed at in Bayfield. There's nice selection of DVD's, Netflix, board games/cards and books if you want to spend a night in.

John and Barbara go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and offer helpful advice on things to do/see. I definitely plan on staying at the carriage house again and next time with the bikes & kayaks for a little adventure.

wonderful weekend

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights in the Superior Horizons Carriage House. The owner was very friendly and helpful. She met us at the door and explained various details of the house. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked, the decor was charming. The steps to the upstairs living area were steep, but manageable. It is located in a beautiful, peaceful, wooded setting. You just couldn't ask for a better place to stay.

Another Outstanding Stay at One of the Best Places

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a return visit to the Carriage House. One will not stay at a cleaner VRBO than this place. The addition of the half bath on the ground floor is a real plus. The owners are always easy to work with. The beds are definitely comfortable. The surroundings at the House are really majestic as well as extremely quiet - no street noise. The 'city' of Bayfield with its shops, restaurants, and more is always a delight.

This was the best experience I have ever had with VRBO. The owner went above and beyond to make us feel welcome in Bayfield, Wisconsin. I am definitely going to return for a winter trip experience.

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic place to stay! My daughters had a fabulous time on our first time trip out to the Apostle Islands and Bayfield, WI area. John and Barb were wonderful hosts who were more than accomodating and willing to help us out with our every need/request. John took us out kayaking to the sea caves and provided such a wonderful account of the history of the caves and scampered us through some little caverns that we never would have seen on our own. The property was beautiful, clean and comfortable. We had more than enough amenaties and felt very much "at home" while staying in their beautiful cabin. Thank you so much John and Barbara for a wonderful experience. I've already told my partner that he & I need to make a trip out there together! I'll be back! 5 stars all the way!

This was my second stay at the Carriage House. An amazing fully furnished house nestled in the woods. Close to Bayfield yet far enough to savor the peacefulness of nature. John and Barb are great hosts. Their hospitality and property are no comparison and far outweigh any hotel room I've ever stayed at! If you want a peaceful and enjoyable vacation, the Carriage House is where you need to stay!
