Barbara Murphy purchased this cottage in 2010
John and Barb Murphy are no strangers to the north. John was actually born in Racine, Wisconsin and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Muskegon, Michigan. Barb was raised in northern Michigan on the east shore of Lake Charlevoix in the small town of Boyne City. Career opportunities led them both to Houston separately, where they eventually met, got married and raised a daughter. After 30 years in the big city, it was time to retire. Having spent the latter 10 years searching for the perfect place, and some 10 states later, they ended up in Bayfield on a whim in the summer of 2009. On the advice of a friend, they scouted an area south of Bayfield County. It was a beautiful place but something was missing. One of the locals there suggested visiting Bayfield; so, they packed for a day trip and headed north. Within the first few minutes of arriving they were definitely “Up North”; they knew this was the place: quaint shops; islands; friendly residents; and, of course, the big water - Lake Superior. It was like coming home. With sights set high, they headed back to Houston, sold their home and moved to Bayfield in August of 2010. Their new home and Carriage House Rental is situated on 10 beautifully wooded acres just one mile north of town.
We are located on 10 wooded acres with a 1/2 mile hike/jog trail that runs along the property with it's own creek. We have wildlife on our property including Black Bear, Bobcat, Deer, Coyote, Wolf, Raccoon, and Fox. Our Carriage house is equipped with all the comforts of home and if you need any special requests, we can have it for you in minutes. You will have a 600 sq ft heated garage where you can store your equipment instead of being one of the many unfortunate visitors that have to keep all their toys on or attached to the vehicles. We are next to the Apostle Islands which is controlled by the National Park Service. You will find Seacaves along the islands and mainland. Kayaking, canoeing and boating is a lifetime experience along the Islands. You can paddle to one of the 21 islands and hike or even camp in areas pristine with nature and solitude. Just keep bear wary!
After experiencing the thousands of acres of nature; walk, ride or drive one mile into town and shop at all the shops or eat at one of many restaurants while looking over Lake Superior and the islands. Want more culture?? Take in a show at the Big Top Chautauqua or at Stage North. You will see famous performers as well as our local artists. Don't forget the Bayfield Apple Festival or the Dog Sled Races or the Bayfield in Bloom or the Fall Harvest Celebration or the Blessing of the Fleet or 'whew!' Just too many things to see and do here in Bayfield. Check out our website for more info and pictures at superiorhorizons.
My husband and I were looking for a getaway in the dead of winter and looking for a unique place to stay. In the winter there isn't a lot to do in Bayfield unless you love the outdoors like we do!!! So in the spirit of unique, we found the Carriage House. Not only is it well maintained, well decorated with an amazing kitchen...it also boasts a wood burning sauna! We hiked all day long up on the lake shore and then came back to relax and wind down in the sauna. We honestly felt like we had been at the spa!
The owners John and Barbara are the kindest people you could ever meet. They gave us ideas on places to go hike and eat, they prepped the sauna for us upon our return from hiking! They were easy to contact whenever we needed anything!
THANK YOU JOHN AND BARBARA! Your home and hospitality was fantastic, and exactly what we needed!
My wife and I decided for a quiet way to ring in the New Years and do a little snow shoeing was well. I located this on VRBO, made contact with Barbara and booked it for the weekend. Must say this was one of the better stays of the year for us. We had never used VRBO but will be going back. The place was a dream weekend for us. Very comfortable, clean to the point it was like a summer cottage someone would own. Barbara meet us upon arrival and pointed out the everything we needed to know. The garage at this time of the year was a big bonus as well. Must say if you are heading to the Bayfield area anything of the year and don't want to put up with other people and want a quite laid back place, this is the place, it has everything you would need and is close enough to town if you need something its a very short drive. Loved it! Thanks Barbara and John!
Beautiful, secluded property. The unit has everything you'll need and feels very safe and cozy. Perfect location for all there is to do in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the area!
Excellent place to stay! Perfect location - close to town but far enough out to make things very peaceful. Loved walking the trail on the property in the morning and having a cup of coffee out on the front porch. A wonderful and cozy place to come home to after a long day of being outside. John and Barb are great hosts and gave us great hiking recommendations. We went after Apple Fest weekend, so things were very quiet and many of the restaurants were closed but we still found some great spots to eat and enjoy a cocktail. Fall colors were peaking and the hiking trails were dead. Would highly recommend coming up this time of year! It was perfect and we will be back.
What a great place to stay. Beautiful home in the woods and they even have a trail on the property. John and Barb are great hosts. John took us out on his kayaks to the caves. What great lasting memories. Bayfield is a nice town on Lake Superior. Nice hiking trails and orchards to visit. A "best feature" was watching a bear in the woods!! No fast food joints or chain hotels. A plus for us. Bayfield looks like a nice fishing village from the 60's. We had a great time and hope to get back!
My stay at the Carriage House was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations I've been on. John and Barb are wonderful hosts and made me feel right at home. The property is spotless and surrounded by nature. Close to town but secluded on 10 wooded acres. Wonderful property, wonderful hosts, wonderful atmosphere. I can't wait to return! 5+ stars.
