With banana, mango, papaya, pinapple, passion and bread fruit, avocado and lemon trees surrounding the house, we decided to name it 'Los Frutales,' Spanish for 'The Fruit Trees.'
The house and pool are perched on a dramatic hillside overlooking an expanse of government protected forests and the world famous Bioluminescent Bays. Beyond is a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Caribbean with St. Croix on the horizon, some 45 miles in the distance.
it is located minutes from the spectacular and unpopulated beaches of the southern shore: Media Luna, Blue Beach, Sun Bay, Red Beach and Navio Beach where 'Lord of the Flies' was filmed in the 1960's.
The two level, three-bedroom house is set on a little over one acre. It features two completely separate living areas: Upstairs has two bedrooms - a master bedroom with a queen, and a guest room with two twins. It has a bath, fully equipped kitchen, living room, dining area and screened-in porch.
The roof has been recently converted to deck for sunning and dining.
The downstairs living room has DirectTV and DVD. The bedroom has a queen. The unit has a full bath.
The outdoor dining area is set in our courtyard garden of bougainvillea and palms.
The house has refreshing cross ventilation from the prevailing trade winds. The bedrooms are air conditioned for cool sleeping on hot nights.
For those of us who need to stay connected to the world, there is broadband Wi-Fi.
Our house manager meets visitors at the airport, helps with car rental arrangements, gives an introduction to the island and can provide deliveries of all sorts of provisions, gourmet foods, spirits and wines.
Other amenities include a Denon-powered, three-zone Bose speaker sound system with iPod dock, 5.8 GHz phone system, linens, towels, beach chairs & umbrella, outdoor gas grill and a laundry room with both washer and dryer.
Activities nearby the house include swimming, sailing, Ecotours, snorkeling, biking, sea kayaking, hiking, nature walks, bird watching, fine and casual dining and excursions to bars reminiscent of Hemingway’s Havana of the 40’s.
No children under 12. The maximum number of guests is 4. And no smoking, please.
Our family of 4 with two teen girls (age 16 & 17) thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. I could write an essay on how much we loved the home and the island, but I'll try to keep it short! We were on the island 14 years ago so it was amazing to return with our (almost) adult children. This home is lovely with multiple places to relax and enjoy the views. We spent time on the rooftop deck in the morning, we used the cool cement dining table by the pool in the afternoon or for dinner. The room off the kitchen was great for quiet reading. The bathroom is wonderful, really nice shower and all the beds were super comfortable! The home has details like speakers all over, outdoor lighting, beautiful landscaping (flowers, palm trees, bushes..gorgeous), screens to keep the bugs out on all windows and doors, and views from many locations that are typical of the island. There are towels, lawn chairs, coolers for your beach days; the kitchen is well stocked with basics (spices, oils, venegar) and has all you will need if you want to cook in.
Others have commented about the roosters; and it's true, there are roosters all over the island, so no matter where you stay, you will hear them. It's part of the charm of the whole place. There are also horses all over in the road, at the beach...dogs lay in the streets and wander all over but we never met an unfriendly animal. Geko's scatter across the porch or in trees. This is really the beauty, charm and quirkiness of Vieques.
Travelers to Vieques should research what it is like on the island so they are not disappointed. There are many "houses" all over the island that are run down or in disrepair, but the residents are nothing but kind and welcoming. Scattered among these local residents are beautiful homes, like Los Frutales. As a mother of two girls, I never felt unsafe in our home or anywhere on the island and my girls often traveled about the island on their own.
The beaches; oh my, this is the Spanish Virgin Islands and the beaches rival St. John. Our favorites were Media Luna, Red and Blue. Navio for body surfing.
The food; Esperanza is where we ate most of our dinners and you can pick any open air, casual, welcoming restaurant. There is a food truck outside the entrance to Sun Bay beach that served the most amazing grilled chicken, beans and rice, empanadas.
A trip to Vieques is an experience of a lifetime. We'll rent here if we are lucky enough to come again.

Nice house but the location is wrong and deceptive. In the middle of a low rent neighborhood. Get the location right and stop jamming VRBO with deceptive reviews.
All the other reviews are true: the house is lovely, both in its architecture and in its furnishings; the views are stunning, even more dramatic than the photos suggest; and Michele and Damien, the property managers, are excellent hosts. (We had a few small mishaps during our stay, and they dealt with them quickly and with warm good cheer).
Frutales was wonderful in all the ways we expected, but it was wonderful in two unexpected ways as well. First, the kitchen. Most kitchens in rental houses are serviceable at best, but this one was quite well-equipped. Good knives, many pots, a dishwasher, an excellent gas grill, and more than enough counter space. We ended up eating in most nights because it was such a pleasure to cook.
Second, the guest apartment. Most guest apartments in Vieques are small and dark and smell faintly of mildew, but this one is large and fairly light and, most importantly, bone dry. Our guest found her rooms almost as pleasant as the ones upstairs.
I've been to Vieques four times, and stayed in four very nice places, but none of them compare to Frutales. In fact, I hesitate to praise it so highly, since I hope to rent in for all my future trips!
This place is truly a Caribbean heaven on earth. We stayed here for our honeymoon, looking for a more private, local vibe than a hotel stay. What we got exceeded all of our expectations. Indescribable beauty, incredible view of Mosquito Bay and the ocean right in front of you and the feeling that you are truly out there with the locals. Wild horses, roosters and lizards roam around the streets surrounding the villa. Yes, as mentioned below, it is LOUD. I was worried about this when we first arrived, as it is constant sounds of the wild all around you, especially the roosters. After the first day, we not only got used to it but came to enjoy the feeling of being in the jungle! Earplugs and some Benadryl did the trick for sleeping at night.
Michele and Damien were such helpful, nice hosts and Damien gave us so many great recommendations of the island. We will absolutely be back and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay.
We just returned from our second trip to Vieques. Previously, we rented a different house, so this was our first time at Los Frutales. My husband and I were completely blown away.
The house was incredible and Michele and Damien were excellent property managers! Everything went very smoothly even though we arrived over an hour early on our flight! We followed Michele and Damien up to the house and they gave us a great tour and basic lay of the land. The views from the property are jaw dropping and you have so much privacy!! The location of the house could not be better! You are a quick drive from both towns and the reserve.
We loved the all the fruit trees - fresh mangoes! The chickens were a delight. We did not mind them at all in the mornings. When staying at a property among locals, guests should expect the true local experience! The W is for guests who want secluded, resort living. This house was stocked with every amenity you could think of. We cooked several times while there and everything was at our fingertips! I blistered my foot on the first day on the beach, and low and behold, band-aids were in the bathroom! The wifi was reliable the first day or two, but then became spotty. We were fine though because our Verizon phones worked just fine! Remember to adjust your roaming settings when you arrive on the islands!
We will definitely stay at Los Frutales again. We loved it so much that after day one, we joked about canceling the other half of our trip and staying here the whole week instead of only 4 nights! We already miss the view at the pool and the amazing rooftop deck!
Thank you so much Michele and Damien!!
My husband and I stayed at Los Frutales for 4 days and we wished we stayed longer! The house was huge and we loved having so many different options of places to relax- the pool, the deck, the gazebo, the 3 different living areas. It was in a great location where you could get to Isabel II or Esperanza in 10 mins. The kitchen had everything and more you needed to grill and cook. My only reasons for rating less than 5 stars is that 1) we had technology problems with the house phone, DVD player, and sometimes wifi not working (the phone was a major problem because Verizon doesn't work in PR so we were counting on the house phone for restaurant reservations, etc) and 2) it is LOUD at night. The windows have no glass so even with the shutters closed, the AC on, ear plugs in with pillows over our heads, the all night roosters and dogs barking didn't allow for the peaceful sleep we were hoping for on vacation. If you are a light sleeper like me, bring noise canceling headphones. Otherwise, we loved the house, the pool, the location, and all of Vieques!
