Overview

About the property

3 BR, 1 Bath, sun porch, fully furnished

Connecticut shore cottage with ocean views, sun porch, and vintage knotty-pine great room.

50-yard walk to either a private or town beach. You can set up your spot and still walk back to the cottage for snacks!

Historic seashore style has vintage details and modern updates. Newer stove, toilet, shower stall. It's a quaint and simple New England cottage without extensive renovations.

Three parking spaces, safe and close to the front door (four if you have very small cars). No street parking anywhere. A shared right-of-way offers a walkway to the backyard and to the sea wall, where you can stand to take a look over the water (no seating, just a standing view). Fenced patio where you can see the ocean and feel the sea breeze.

A slice of New England coastal charm. You will not find a cottage of this size, this close to the beaches, at this price. It's a real getaway--feels like stepping back in time to a slower, quieter life but with perks (like a microwave and air conditioner).

It's a cozy atmosphere on a mellow beach street.

We are working to keep it as a family place, so you have the sense of staying at someone's cottage rather than renting commercial real-estate. We have family furniture (and some belongings) in the cottage. As a vintage family cottage, it is not toddler-friendly. We have antiques and seashore knickknacks but no more toddlers in our family. So children over five (5) years old will get along better at the cottage.

Three bedrooms, each with a double/full bed (guests bring linens). The largest bedroom has two dressers. The two smaller bedrooms have one dresser. Closets in all of them.

Small bathroom with newer toilet, sink/vanity, and shower stall.

It's a quiet neighborhood on a dead-end street. Little traffic, little rushing around. Lots of people sitting under umbrellas or wading in the water at low tide.

$20 at town beach lot if you need more than our three parking spaces.

A shared right-of-way for walking to the backyard patio with outdoor shower, to the street, or to a standing view at the sea wall. Full outside clothesline for hanging wet towels and bathing suits. Small patio area with an ocean view in a fenced yard. Sit and watch the water, or you can take a little stroll out to the sea wall in the right-of-way for a look at the sunset or to see the shoreline (no seating in this shared space between cottages--just for standing and walking).

Perfect location for the full shoreline experience--halfway point between New Haven and New London. So relax on the cottage sun porch or hang out at the soothing beach for the day. Or drive west to New Haven for theater and museums or drive east to New London for arts and entertainment. Also close to Mystic Seaport and Mohegan Sun Casino.

During their visit, guests will have access to all rooms in the cottage. Two couches on the sun porch. Two couches in the living room. The rooms are fully furnished with a full kitchen. WiFi and small flatscreen television--tv has ports for your HDMI cords to devices and laptops or for your smart sticks. No cable!

(The attic and three porch storage closets are restricted.)

About Aimee

My grandmother budgeted and planned to buy this cottage. I grew up spending much of my summer hanging out on Seaside Avenue--a mellow and quiet beach neighborhood. Slow pace and lots of sun.

I am a professor of history and enjoy gardening, reading, and hiking.

Aimee purchased this cottage in 1979

Why Aimee chose Westbrook

You have the best of both worlds with this cottage--vintage New England charm with knotty pine & original doors plus modern updates to the kitchen and bathroom. Cozy cottage with the amenities. Ocean view and 50-yard walk to the beaches. No need to pack the car for the day! You will feel like you are in a different time, staying at someone's family cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

Walk to the beaches. Two minutes!

Leave your blankets and chairs at your spot (taking valuables with you) and return to the cottage for lunch or any forgotten items! This laid-back locale has you covered!

It's low-tech. Newer storm windows and appliances, Wi-Fi, a small tv with HDMI ports. But the overall vibe is vintage simplicity and beach mellow.

Perfect location in the middle of two beaches. 50 yards in either direction, so you can set up a spot at a mellow beach and walk back to the cottage if necessary.

This vintage family cottage offers quaint, simple charms--it's not a renovated, high-cost rental.

The cottage is also a mile from route 95, and close to New Haven and New London for more shoreline activities. Clinton, Essex, and Old Saybrook have a lot to offer too.

Notes:
The cottage has the best of two worlds--vintage New England shoreline charm and modern amenities. Get away from the hustle and pressures of regular life in a cozy cottage, low tech but high comfort. And escape the fast pace on a quiet beach street with little traffic and lots of beach access. It's our family cottage, so you have the feeling of staying at someone's place rather than a commercial rental. However, we do not have toddlers in our family at this point, so it is more appropriate for children over five (5).

It's in a perfect location for not being beach front. The sea view was nice. The cottage was comfy!!

  • 5 of 5

It was very spacious and well equipped with all the beach gear one would need. Everything was explained clearly as far use of the cottage and and outside surroundings. I loved being able to have such a short walk to the public beach. We lucked out with a perfect week of weather. But when a break was needed from all the beach fun, it was on to shopping in Essex, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Madison and Clinton! We left no stone unturned! There was a nice listing of local shops and restaurants. We we able to entertain friends, finding fun activities for everyone to enjoy. My favorite times were walking the beach between 6-8 am and talking to the other early risers. People were friendly. Walks in the evening were nice. It would have been nice to have basic cable or even a TV w/ antenna for a few local channels. I am a big NPR fan so the radio and WIFI did the job and besides most time was spent outside, talking or reading. The only other perk that would be nice is central air or a second AC for the bedroom area of the house. Oh and loved loved loved the Sun porch. It was fantastic out there a nap is almost unavoidable. Parking was good. I can't say much more except I would stay there again God willing and it was so relaxing!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Dianne! We were happy to see your comments in the guest book and your review here. We love to see folks enjoying our vintage family cottage as much as we have! As a vintage cottage, built in 1948, there are no ducts or options for central air. We provide the new large air conditioner unit for particular hot, humid days. On nice days and the clear cool nights, we open all the windows and French doors to the porch, put the fans in the bedroom windows, and let nature do the cooling :) Glad you got to enjoy the many shopping and activity options in the area. Hope to see y'all again!*!*!* You were fabulous renters.

Great Stay at this Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a quaint, comfortable cottage with a perfect location. It was immaculate and it had everything needed for an enjoyable stay at the beach. Coffee in the morning on the porch was just the perfect way to start the day. The beach was steps away and you had the choice of quiet Coral Sands or the public beach.

The neighborhood was great for long walks in the morning or in the evening. There is a lot to do from the outlets to Mystic Seaport, a drive away.

I definitely would stay again in this cozy cottage. The owner was great! 😀򐀽򓨎

Just a lovely quaint vacation cottage

  • 5 of 5

It was a very well stocked and managed property. It truly was like being in a home instead of the sterile feeling of a hotel. The location was perfect and the dates of renting ( Monday through monday) couldn't have been more convienent. Everything was in great condition and very comfortable as well. We look forward to making this an annual tradition.

Great place vacation.

  • 5 of 5

Loved the cottage it was clean and well maintained. The private beach was great, clean and not crowded and only a short walk. So close to both Clinton outlet stores as well as Westbrook outlets, plenty of great restaurants and grocery stores. I can't say enough nice things about the owner, she was just great and I would definitely recommend this cottage.
