Lake Home Retreat

Awesome vacation! Morning coffee on the deck was a great start. The view of the lake immediately puts you in a relaxed mode. The deck is definitely a place to linger. Later morning we would take the kayaks out for a paddle to explore the lake. The pontoon is fabulous - very comfortable for multiple activities: we fished, watched eagles from a nearby nest, swam, and enjoyed the sun and a cold beer on the water. We even found a walleye spot! One night we sat out on the deck and watched the lightning from a distance storm. We also enjoyed sitting by the water at night in the adirondack chairs star gazing. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. The place is big so plenty of room to find a spot to have alone time. I enjoyed the space in the living room in the big comfy couch in front of the picture window with the view of the lake where I could read a book in the early morning hours. Thanks again! We'll be back!

Breathtaking lake views and family fun!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your beautiful lake home! I wanted to give my children some Minnesota memories that I had growing up. On the second day, my daughter said that this is the best vacation ever! Traveling from Arizona, our kids enjoyed many things for the first time: kayaking, fishing, lake swimming, and s'mores. The evenings were just as fun with your pool table, fooseball, and all the games. The lake views are breathtaking and the location is peaceful. Thank you for your attention to detail, everything was spotless. We look forward to our return in August.

Family fun at the lake

  • 5 of 5

Your lake home was perfect for our family. We fished off the dock and my granddaughter caught her first fish. Thanks for the Ron's warehouse shopping tip. Everyone came back with something at a great price. Your place is convenient to the bike trail, downtown, groceries, and everywhere. We plan to make this a yearly family vacation.

Good & Bad

  • 3 of 5

For 19 years, my in-law family and I spent one week at this lake home. If you are looking for a huge lake home with lots of living space, a nice size kitchen, plenty of room to spread out and have your space, this is the place for you. If you are looking for an awesome beach area, this is not the place for you. When we first began coming to Jan's Place, it was really, really nice, but as the years went on, things started to fall apart or break and nothing was done about it. The deck was finally replaced a few years back after many years of a board being replaced here and there and much nervousness about it's stability. The 30 some steps going down to the lake are in desperate need of replacement...several of the boards are crocked and falling apart - a real hazard. If not careful, the boat lift will take your hand off as it doesn't work correctly. For 19 years we had the same two docks and for many, many years they both needed to be replaced...again several boards here and there have been replaced and the blue one is not level and super wobbly. For 19 years we had the same exact sheets on all of the beds! The king size room is great, but the other five bedrooms really need new mattresses. It's a mystery how sheets that are washed weekly can last that long. If you have a rainy week, the cabin is just huge and allows for everyone to have their space if needed, or if you want to gather together for games, etc., it is quite frankly perfect. However, probably the last 5-7 years the beach area has been absolutely horrible. The grass is long and not cut very often and when it was cut, it was often after we had arrived and we had to stand around and wait while it was cut. It's extremely mushy and wet down there and the last 5-6 years there have been large pieces of plywood randomly placed around to allow you to walk and not get soaked up to your ankles. Many of these boards are old, not in good shape, warped...believe me, several slivers were acquired. I realize that areas by the lake can be wet, but what should be done is maybe a large patio be built or there must be something to fix this problem. Last summer we spent most of our week at the neighbors beach area, as he was kind enough to let us hang out there when he went home for the week. Again, we had 19 years here and made a ton of great memories and we're thankful for that. It's just too bad the owner doesn't take some of that money she makes and replace and fix things!

Owner's Response: Dear unhappy in-law, I enjoyed meeting and getting to know everyone in your family reunion group over the years. I think that it is very special for adult siblings and their families to make it a priority to vacation together every summer. I’m glad it gave you “a ton of great memories”! Thank you for the comments that the lake home is spacious with a beautiful view. However, there are gross inaccuracies within this review. First and most importantly, safety is always my major priority. All areas inside and outside of the home are carefully inspected weekly. My talented handyman Don readily responds to all repair calls. I did NOT receive a call from anyone in your party regarding any issues during your 19 years. I’m quite befuddled that you shared your worries in a review rather than direct communication. Simply put, we can’t fix what we don’t know. The lake home cedar deck has ALWAYS BEEN SAFE. The deck structure has been inspected by a licensed carpenter preseason and regularly throughout the summer. Several years ago, a new bigger deck was built using premium Trex composite decking. The lake view from the deck is gorgeous! Another concern that you mentioned is the waterfront and beach area. This has been fixed. Professional landscapers added lakeshore rocks, installed drainage pipes, and a berm to protect the beach and lawn from major storm runoff. By the way, my neighbor is the nicest neighbor a person can ask for! He has invited many of my guests to enjoy his lakefront. Future guests, please check back! I have not used the VRBO review feature (sorry, I am not as “high tech” as I would like to be) but will be sending review links to very happy previous and returning guests shortly. Thank you! Jan
