About Nancy McCutcheon
I grew up in Northcentral Wisconsin and have always enjoyed woodland and lake life. I bought this property for to enjoy with my two children, who are now away at school, which is why I have opened my home up to others who enjoy a great North woods adventure and escape.
Nancy McCutcheon purchased this House in 2004
Why Nancy McCutcheon chose Bass Lake
Hayward is a great place to relax but also offers great restaurants, golf, mini-golf, go carting, old fashioned candy shop, nature center, petting zoo and other great activities for the whole family.
What makes this House unique
The cabin is on a wooded property just steps from the water. If you enjoy going on long walks you can go for miles, exploring all that Northern WI has to offer. Angler's Haven is a fun bar/restaurant one mile from the cabin. It is on beautiful Lac Courte Oreilles and has a great menu and activities for kids of all ages.

Love this beautiful cabin. This was our 5th time staying here and once again everything was great. It's a well decorated retreat with everything you need. Also n easy drive to Hayward. Good communication with owner. Thanks for sharing your wonderful cabin!
Thank you, Nancy, for your kind words. It is always a treat having you as a guest. I look forward to your next visit. Hopefully there will be more snow for the Birkebeiner in 2018!
Private and quiet get-away.
This was our second stay at this quaint lakeside cottage. If you are looking for a place that is private and relaxing, this is it. We especially enjoyed spending time on the spacious deck and comfortable desk furniture. The view from the deck overlooks the quiet lake. We spent time on the pontoon and enjoyed catching many panfish from both the dock and the boat. This is a very quiet lake, many times we were the only ones on it. The kitchen is well equipped to cook your own meals if you choose. The loft bedroom upstairs has a queen and full size bed. We found the queen bed to be very comfortable. On rainy days, we enjoyed visiting Hayward which was minutes away. We enjoyed watching a few movies on the DVD player. The television is antenna only and we found only two channels, so we would suggest bringing some movies with you OR enjoy some of the movies from the owner's library. We found communication with the owner, Nancy, to be very responsive and accommodating.
Thanks so much, Becky. It was great having you back. Come again soon.
My husband and I had a delightful time at this lovely cottage. The deck and patio were very nice and the gardens were beautiful. The cottage was sweet and comfortable. The pontoon enhanced our visit and the owner Nancy was responsive to questions. In our case there was only one issue which might not bother others...the one bedroom is in the upstairs loft and the 1 bathroom is in the downstairs...so if you have to go to the bathroom at night, it means a trek downstairs. We are in our 70's, so that was an especially unwelcome idea! Otherwise, thanks Nancy!
Thanks for the kind review, Nancy. I'm glad you had a nice time. I actually hope to add a second bath upstairs where the large close is. Great feedback!
Comfortable cottage on a quiet lake
My wife, I and two teenage sons enjoyed a week here. Most of my comments are similar to other reviews. The cottage is modern, clean and well equipped. Plenty of storage. The owner was quick to replay to our questions / comments, both before and during our stay. There was enough material in the owner's library for us to watch a new movie each night without opening my sons' stash, and for my wife to read a couple of their novels. Cottage is centrally located, rural enough yet within a few minutes of the towns of Hayward and Stone Lake, and of Windigo, Grindstone and LCO (and multiple other) lakes. We took full advantage of the furnished pedalboat, kayak and two paddleboards. We brought our 17 foot fishing boat; public launch at attached Durphee Lake is fully improved, with parking for four truck/trailer combos. Channel between Schoolhouse/Durphee is short and clear but small, would not be able to get a pontoon boat through. Fishing was fair; caught several nice panfish and a few small northern before trying other lakes.
Did have a few fairly minor "cons", some of which may not apply to everyone:
1) Bring your bug spray. Because the cottage is on the isthmus between two lakes, the road and cottage are near lake level, and there was a lot of standing water near the road. Mosquito population was quite high, but mostly only on calmer afternoons / evenings.
2) The "bedroom/loft" is two beds in a loft area. The loft is roomy, the beds are comfortable and the is a closet and dresser for storage; however, there are no walls or doors to make this a "bedroom". On principle, I have no problem with this, but in a family with two consistent heavy snorers, it would be nice to isolate the beds from the comfortable couches downstairs.
3) There is room to park two vehicles off the road, but not really a driveway; I could not find a way to turn our boat trailer around without using her neighbor's driveway, and I try to avoid invading their privacy.
Overall, we will definitely consider returning.
Thank you, Ron, for the kind review. This was a particularly bad month for mosquitos with all the rain we've had. There are citronella candles and tiki torches around the deck and some fog spray for those nights when they become a nuisance.
It sounds like you and your family really enjoyed your time on the water fishing, paddleboarding, pedal biking and all.
We hope to see you back again!
We had a very nice time. The owner was very helpful and accommodating. Perfect for a quiet couple getaway.
great return stay at Schoolhouse Lake
We rented the Schoolhouse Lake house for a second time in two years. It's so peaceful, clean, and relaxing. We enjoy watching the herons, eagles, turtles, fish, deer, and other wildlife. We appreciate having so many different items to use on the water. We don't rent the pontoon but use everything else. Fires on the deck were great. The house was very clean--even inside the cupboards--and the queen bed is comfortable. It's great to have so many games, books, magazines, and videos to use at the house. If you don't want them, they are tucked away. Nancy is very helpful and easy to work with. The water level in the lake was higher than the last time we were there, almost to the bottom of the pier. The heron was fishing from the pier. We got some good photos. One thing that the house photos do not show is that the main level floor is pebbles in cement. Nancy has carpets strategically placed, so you don't have to have something on your feet. It's just nice to be aware of it for tender feet. The environment is as pictured. We'll definitely rent from Nancy again.
The house is away from town but offers such a great environment that if you are looking for a serene place to relax and renew, this is it. It's easy to drive ten minutes to Hayward or five minutes to Stone Lake. We weren't able to eat at Angler's Haven, but the food looked and smelled great. We had the Friday night fish fry at Trailways Inn, which was very good. We can't recommend Angler's Bar in Hayward. The food was mediocre at best, and we've tried it a couple of times over the years. The folks at the Hayward Visitors Center are extremely helpful every time we are in the area. The new Birkie museum is interesting. We like the area because it is close enough to do day trips to Ashland, Bayfield, Superior, and the north shore area. The numerous state parks are fun to explore as well. You can't beat the beauty of Wisconsin.
Lumberjack competition every summer in Hayward. Rodeo every summer in Spooner.
