About The Owner

Greetings! We are Kevin and Sophia O’Donnell and we are currently residing abroad as US Diplomats. Kevin is a Bay Area native and this is our Russian River dream home. We love to visit for its peace, tranquillity, and convenience to wineries, California’s many natural wonders, and our extended family in San Francisco. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

If you are planning to travel to Panama, India, Colombia, Mexico, Africa and Australia we have lived there and can give you some background.

The Owner purchased this house in 2011

Why The Owner chose Sonoma County

The river, the deck, the dock, the redwoods, the hiking, the natural beauty, the pinot noir, the beaches, the farmers markets, the restaurants, the rustic charm, the hot summer days, the cool evenings, the fireplace, the morning fog, the artisan shops, the sauvignon blancs, the amazing vistas, for our kids and for the kids inside of us.

What makes this house unique

You can enjoy the natural beauty of this special area in an elegantly appointed house with all the amenities to make this a unique experience.

Very disappointing communication with a host

  • 1 of 5

I booked this house for my family visiting and it was the worst experience with a host we have ever had. We've stayed at over 40 rentals and I have never experienced such poor communication with the host. He didn't give us a code to enter the house until late afternoon of the check-in day which ruined my family's day as they planned to leave in the morning and explore the area but couldn't leave until Kevin sent the code. I reached out to him the day before and didn't hear back until late next day. As a result, we spent the morning looking for another rental place in the area. He finally got back to us and said he'll send the code in an hour which he did not...It was unbelievable and very stressful. I sent him over 10 messages that day and we left him 6 voice messages on his phone (he never picked up the number he gave us). The house itself is nice, located right by the river, but it also shares the backyard with the neighbors (never mentioned in the description). The instructions in the house are very confusing and different from those we received (different check-in, check-out times, different phone numbers of the house etc.) Internet also didn't work which happens occasionally, but again, with most hosts you can resolve it quickly, but it's impossible when they don't get back to you. We wrote all of this to the owner as we don't like writing bad reviews, but his response was: I was able to reply at noon (that he would send a code in an hour which we didn't receive until later after 2pm) and the drive takes us 2h from our place so we were fine. That response made us write this review and warn other renters which I notified Kevin I was going to do. Only then, he said he would like to make up for the damage by letting us stay in his house for free in the future which we will never do, as communicating with this person is simply a nightmare. I read a few reviews that complained about the communication with the host but thought it was an exception as many places usually have one or two unhappy renters. Wish I paid attention to it as this was a very sad experience and ruined our family trip.

Owner's Response: On very rare occasions my work takes me to parts of world where the internet or cellular barely work, are censored or it does not exist. In those cases I contact all my guests ahead of time with information they need for the house and I also have contact information for my sister in Marin to help out for our guests. I thought I sent Paulina the information she needed ahead of time but that was not the case. Once she arrived at the house I was in contact with her with a delay time but she did not send a email with the other issues until after her departure. I know I did not initially meet her expectation thus I sent the email below offering her a few nights at the house for no charge, please see email I sent: Paulina I again can only express how sorry I am I travel to isolated parts of the world for work and at times when I send emails there a long delay is possible that I do not know of as my last email arrived a day later I try to send out emails before I leave to cover the time period I was gone but in this case it was not sufficient I realize that my lack of communication due to where I am seems like I am not communicating but it is not the case. I want everyone to have a great experience in the house and for you this was not the case To make up for this I would like to offer you a complimentary stay over the next few months. Again this is not how I operate and. I am usually always in contact with my guest Thank you Kevin

Great location and wonderful house with river access!

The house is very nice and well furnished great deck and hot tub-spa. Private dock with your own river access and kayaks and water toys makes this a perfect vacation. We would love to stay again next summer.

Perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

Walked in to a very clean home. We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay- cooking supplies, direct river access, cozy beds. It's in a quiet setting, but only a couple minutes to town. My group already decided we'd like to return next year!

A new family tradition!

  • 5 of 5

A truly amazing place! Our boys had the time of their life, as did we! It was clean, well stocked, the dock was close by, the kayaks and other equipment left for our use was fantastic! Within 24 hours of being there, all the boys asked, "When can we come back!?!?!?" Our answer was, "As soon as we can!" 5 stars!

Our family rented this Russian River home in July 2016, and everyone enjoyed our week stay. Our grandkids took the canoe, paddle board and two kayaks out every day, and the floating dock was great. Noticed that some places on the river, had to launch from the banks. As noted in some other previous renter reviews, the access to the dock does required descending some steep steps, but we are in our late sixties and had no problem, recognizing we did not run down the stairs like our grandkids. We were pleasantly surprised at the absence of swarming biting inspects, but I would still recommend bringing some bug repellant.

The house was very comfortable, and well stocked. My wife was impressed with the cook range, and I really liked the outside propane grill which seemed to get hotter quicker than my hard piped gas grill at home. Dishwasher was very quiet, and be warn, that the hot water at the tap runs very hot. The sun room was nice to sit in when the sun dropped below the hill, and fog rolled in. It was great to sit out on the deck for dinner with our seven (7) member family. The hot tub was a great hit, and I think our kids used it more than the boats. The owner (Kevin) was very responsive, to send over someone to shock the hot tub the next day, when we notified him that the tub water was a little cloudy and needed to be clean from the last renters. It should be noted that there are no steps from the deck to access the path below to the river.

We thought the bathroom lights were very dim, until someone pointed out that the switch toggle had a dimmer slide next to it. Guess getting old, does not make us any smarter to the obvious. The gas dryer worked great, and was a lot hotter than our electric dryer at home. The WiFi internet worked great, and only had to be rebooted a couple of times. Our AT&T cell service was spotty, and dropped in and out, and there is a hard line phone in the home, but we did not use it.

This home is elevated as well as the other river homes around it, which means you will to go up 3 flights of stairs to reach the entry way. The first flight of stairs leads to the storage room for the boat toys, then you have to go up the next two flight of stairs to reach the front door (there is no back door entry, whereas the two story high back deck has no egress stairs).

Bottom Line: Rent this home, you will not be disappointed.
