Paradise is at your door when you step into this former Scallop House converted into a fabulous beach bungalow. Surrounded by Peconic Bay, the enormous stone deck out back offers a panoramic view of tranquil waters. Watch the sailboat races, lounge, bar-b-q, entertain, read,

snooze the hours away. Go clamming, crabbing or swimming off the beach that borders the north side of the house.

Enjoy water views from the kitchen, designed by a former chef/restauranteur and relax in the living/dining room with fireplace that opens up onto the deck.

4 sleep comfortably in the master bedroom with queen sized bed, loft with full sized bed and second bedroom with twin bed. A view of the beach and bay floods the full bathroom with light. Or refresh and have your guests enjoy a shower en plein air on deck.

There is a kayak and boat rental down the block, a swimming beach right outside your door and beautiful dunes and beaches that stretch around the perimeter of New Suffolk, the most beautiful on the North Fork.

The bungalow is situated in the heart of the village, a year round artists community with several restaurants in walking distance. Close by farm stands and vineyards line the roads with seasonal fruit and produce and artisanal cheeses, breads and condiments for the locavore. A fabulous fish market and supermarkets are minutes away from the house which is situated about a mile from the bus to New York City. Zagat rated casual and fine dining and award-wining vineyards are minutes away.

Enjoy the tranquility of the North Fork in the beautiful village of New Suffolk, situated strategically between the farms, restaurants, vineyards, beaches, bay and Long Island Sound.

The view of Peconic Bay was wonderful. That view was the highlight of our time there.

The inside of the 800 sq.ft. cottage was eclectic to say the least. The book selection was ample; we added a few books of our own that future guests might enjoy. The bedroom was a little tight, but the mattress was great. We were not happy the gas oven didn't work, but we used take-out to reduce our use of the kitchen. We also had to wait most of one morning for the repair man, so we lost 1/2 day doing sightseeing etc. Overall, I would rate the experience about an 7-8 out of 10, primarily because of the terrific view. Some needed repairs on the house (part of the front right of the cottage had fallen away from the wall) will in the future afford new guests the opportunity to rate the experience a little higher than we did.

Owner's Response: The oven has been replaced with a new stove. It had only stopped working 2 days before guest arrived. In addition to the indoor stove a perfectly good 2 year old Weber grill with house gas was in good working condition. The decorative door that that fell from the right side of the house has been remounted.

Happy just being here!

  • 5 of 5

Like many reviewers, my biggest fear is that too many people will discover this magical spot! We are a middle aged couple with two dogs. We were very comfortable here, but wouldn't recommend it for more than 2 or 3 people. Overnight guests can be accommodated in the loft or small single bedroom. We weren't looking for lots of excitement, but rather to spend as much time enjoying the view, the beach next door, clamming, kayaking and all that the area has to offer. Several restaurants right up the street. Friendly locals and a weekly boat regatta that you can watch from the backyard. Our host Elaine is wonderful and very accommodating. We will definitely return as soon as we can!

Where do you live?

  • 5 of 5

This cottage exceeds its description! It is easily the most artistic, charming vacation cottage I have ever rented.

I never went to the nearby "public" beach, just donned my water shoes, climbed down the swim ladder, and was in heavenly salt water multiple times per day. New Suffolk is the chillest town, and the area is bursting with farm fresh produce and beautiful wine, fresh seafood, and glorious sights. The large deck hangs over the water, and immediately puts one at ease. Gathering here with friends, around the big outdoor table, watching the Wednesday boat race, has built unforgettable memories. The owner is very very responsive, and just wants us to all enjoy this work of art that she has created. There is one neighbor, but the rest of the view is open sky and salt water. I envy you if you rent this place, it is quirky, but in the most wonderful way. I will say, that it felt very spacious because of the large outdoor space. Books abound, and wild bunnies, Osprey, and all kinds of water birds can be spotted in this unspoiled location. The local restaurant, (one block away!) is wonderful for vegetarians and omnivores alike. For a special evening, do not miss North Fork Table and Inn.

We stayed at the Sugar Shack for one week and enjoyed every minute of it! The cottage is perfectly located on the bay, at the end of a street and down the street from a very good restaurant/bar. The view is amazing! On Wednesday evening you can sit in the yard, on the bay, and watch a sail boat regatta! The kitchen has everything! The internet connection is strong! And Pam, the manager, is very helpful!

I wouldn't recommend that more than 2 people stay there because it is small. However, it is not too small for 2 people. And if you forget to bring a book, no worries because there are so many great books to choose from on the shelves.

If you want a relaxing and easy get away do not hesitate to stay at the Sugar Shack!

Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

This cozy little bungalow is a piece of heaven on earth! The location, the views, the decor of special collections, the sand and water at our feet, wading through the low tide looking for shell treasures, cooking with heaven through the window, bird watching, hearing the sounds of the quiet...Our week here was absolute paradise for a small family of 3 with a young child. The bungalow is equipped with everything you would need to make your stay comfortable including a marvelous library of books and the beautiful water of Peconic bay literally a few steps away. The manager and owner are both absolutely fantastic and hospitable. We plan to return again and again to build upon these magical memories for our family.
